Casio’s history identifies the DW-5000C as the first G-SHOCK and the strongest choice for understanding the watch that started the range. The DW-5500C, DW-5600C, WW-5300C, DW-500C, and AW-500 each represent a different milestone. This is a historically grounded shortlist, not a definitive Casio ranking.
Which 1980s G-SHOCK should you buy?
Start with the distinction that matters most to you. Casio’s chronology documents a decade of designs beyond the original square digital watch, including a mud-resistant model, a cold-resistant model, a junior-sized option, and the first analog-digital G-SHOCK. The dates and model descriptions below are from Casio’s official G-SHOCK brand history; they describe original models, not the condition of any watch currently offered for sale.
| Model | Year in Casio’s history | Why it stands out | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| DW-5000C | 1983 | The original G-SHOCK, with a hollow structure supporting the module at selected points and a urethane-covered case. | Collectors seeking the historical starting point |
| WW-5300C | 1984 | Casio lists low-temperature resistance to −30°C. | Readers interested in a cold-weather milestone |
| DW-5500C | 1985 | The first Mud Resist G-SHOCK, with construction intended to shield the case and module. | Readers drawn to the mud- and dust-focused design |
| DW-5600C | 1987 | The first watch in the long-running 5600 line. | Readers who want the familiar square design and its lineage |
| DW-500C | 1988 | The first junior-sized G-SHOCK, downsizing the DW-5600C’s design and functionality. | Readers interested in a smaller-format model |
| AW-500 | 1989 | The first analog-digital combination G-SHOCK. | Readers who prefer hands alongside a digital display |
What makes each model notable?
DW-5000C: the original G-SHOCK
Casio dates the first G-SHOCK to 1983. Its corporate history describes the DW-5000C’s hollow case structure, in which the module is supported at selected points, with urethane covering the case. Casio says the watch used five protective layers and was water resistant to 200 meters as an original-model specification. Those statements establish the design’s historical intent; they do not establish the present condition or water resistance of an individual surviving watch. See Casio’s corporate history of the DW-5000C.
Casio says Project Team Tough was formed in 1981 to pursue a watch that would not break if dropped. The company reports that the team developed more than 200 prototypes over about two years before arriving at a shock-resistant structure. This makes the DW-5000C the natural pick if you want the model most directly tied to the original G-SHOCK idea.

WW-5300C: a cold-weather milestone
Casio’s history lists the 1984 WW-5300C as resistant to low temperatures down to −30°C. That rating is a documented feature of this model in Casio’s chronology; it should not be generalized to other vintage G-SHOCKs. Choose it for its distinct place in the 1980s lineup rather than assuming a decades-old example will perform to its original specification today.
DW-5500C: the first Mud Resist model
Released in 1985, the DW-5500C was the first Mud Resist G-SHOCK in Casio’s history. The company describes two-tone molding to shield the case and module, along with a design that eliminates spaces between the buttons and case. It is the most distinctive choice here if the mud-resistant construction is what interests you.

DW-5600C: the beginning of the 5600 line
Casio identifies the 1987 DW-5600C as the first model in the 5600 line. Its history says the watch had strong sales for nine years through 1996, when Casio released the EL-backlight-equipped DW-5600E. For buyers drawn to the enduring square format and its lineage, the DW-5600C is a compelling alternative to the original DW-5000C. The “nine years” figure describes Casio’s reported sales history, not a guarantee about availability or demand today.
DW-500C: a smaller-format option
Casio’s chronology calls the 1988 DW-500C its first junior-sized G-SHOCK. The company says it retained the DW-5600C’s functionality and design in a downsized watch. Its significance is the smaller format, not a claim that any particular example will fit every wearer comfortably.

AW-500: the first analog-digital combination
Casio dates the AW-500 to 1989 and describes it as the first analog-digital combination G-SHOCK. The company lists shock resistance and 20-bar water resistance as original features. If you want a vintage G-SHOCK with hands as well as a digital display, this is the clearest historical choice in the shortlist.
How to choose a vintage 1980s G-SHOCK
The model name tells you which historical design you are considering; it does not establish whether a particular watch is authentic, functional, complete, or safe to expose to water. The official histories document original specifications and milestones, not marketplace prices, the condition of current listings, replacement-part availability, or repair outcomes.

- EASY VISIBILITY DAY OR NIGHT WITH LED BACKLIGHT The built-in LED backlight with afterglow provides improved visibility in low-light conditions, while the high-contrast display keeps important information easy to read wherever your day takes you.
- Decide whether you want an original vintage reference or a modern design lineage. Casio says current 5000/5600 watches carry forward the original’s form and shock-resistant construction, but that does not mean a contemporary model duplicates every feature of an 1980s reference. See Casio’s 5000 and 5600 series origin page.
- Assess the exact watch and seller. Ask for clear photographs and details about operation, service history, and any replaced parts; evaluate the individual example rather than relying on its model designation alone.
- Do not treat a historical water-resistance rating as a current guarantee. Casio’s published 200-meter and 20-bar figures describe original models. They do not prove that a decades-old watch remains water resistant.
- Check condition and service options before committing. The sources here do not establish the availability of parts, the ease of repair, or the outcome of servicing for any particular reference. Confirm what a qualified watchmaker can assess for the exact watch you are considering.
How the 1980s shaped G-SHOCK
The decade’s documented models show the range expanding from the DW-5000C’s original shock-resistant concept. Casio’s chronology moves from cold resistance in 1984 and Mud Resist construction in 1985 to the 5600 line in 1987, a junior-sized design in 1988, and an analog-digital combination in 1989. That variety is why a useful “best” list is better understood as a guide to different historical distinctions than as a single ranked winner.
