The best 1960s watches depend on what you want from one: an Explorer 1016 for field-watch clarity, a Daytona or Carrera for motorsport timing, a GMT-Master for travel, or a Seiko 62MAS for early dive-watch history. For a versatile, often more approachable starting point, consider the Omega Seamaster De Ville or Seiko Sportsmatic 5. This is a historically grounded shortlist, not a ranking by current price or availability.

How to choose a 1960s watch

Start with intended use, then weigh historical significance against wearability and the condition of the individual watch. A historically important reference is not automatically the best daily wearer: many watches from this decade are over 50 years old, and originality, serviceability and water resistance can matter more than a model’s reputation.

  • Purpose: Decide whether you want a dress watch, field or travel watch, diver, or chronograph.
  • Movement: The decade includes hand-wound and automatic mechanical watches, as well as the first commercial quartz-watch milestone in 1969.
  • Condition and originality: Check the dial, hands, bezel, case, movement and reference against period documentation. Ask whether the case has been heavily polished and request service records.
  • Practicality: Consider legibility, case dimensions, thickness and bracelet or strap fit. Treat water resistance as unproven until a qualified watchmaker tests the watch.
  • Acquisition: Rarity, provenance, access to parts and specialist servicing all affect ownership. Current prices and inventory require live verification.

Best 1960s watches by style and significance

Rolex Explorer ref. 1016: best for field-watch clarity

The Explorer’s story began in 1953, after the Everest ascent, and the model became an enduring tool-watch design. The ref. 1016 is a strong 1960s choice if you value a straightforward, legible watch with expedition heritage. Rolex’s history of the Explorer and other milestones is documented in its official timeline.

Rolex GMT-Master: best for travel

Rolex designed the GMT-Master as a navigation aid for professionals crossing time zones. Its two-tone day-and-night bezel gives the watch its distinctive travel function and makes it a natural choice for someone drawn to practical complications as well as 1960s tool-watch design.

  • OPEN-APERTURE DIAL: this men's automatic watch features a black dial with 24-hour subdial and LumiBrite hands, with a retro watch feel inspired by the 1964 Crown Chronograph
  • AUTOMATIC: these self-winding, automatic men's watches are powered by your movement, with a power reserve of 41 hours

  • WATER-RESISTANT: these men's wrist watches are water-resistant down to 50 meters
  • 4R39 CALIBER: equipped with the reliable caliber 4R39 automatic movement, this accurate men's watch keeps precise time

Rolex Cosmograph Daytona: best for racing heritage

Introduced in 1963, the Daytona was a robust, waterproof endurance-racing chronograph with a tachymetric scale. It is one of the decade’s most significant motorsport watches. Exotic, or “Paul Newman,” dials appeared in 1965 and later became highly coveted, but the dial on any individual watch should be assessed for originality rather than valued on reputation alone.

Heuer Carrera ref. 2447: best for chronograph legibility

The Carrera was named for the Carrera Panamericana and designed around the demands of motorsport timing. Jack Heuer pursued maximum legibility; the ref. 2447 used a tension ring to hold the crystal and improve water resistance. Compared with the Daytona, the Carrera offers a distinct racing identity and design approach, but no general price or availability comparison is reliable without current market evidence. Time+Tide discusses the Carrera and other 1960s Rolex and Heuer models in its 1960s watch overview.

  • 4R39 CALIBER: equipped with the reliable caliber 4R39 automatic movement, this accurate men's watch keeps precise time

Omega Seamaster De Ville: best versatile dress-sport option

Produced from 1963 to 1967, the Seamaster De Ville combined Seamaster water resistance with a slimmer, more refined dress-watch profile. Versions came with automatic or hand-wound movements, optional date, and steel, gold-plated or 18-karat cases. One documented example, ref. 136.020 with caliber 610, measures 34.5 mm. A Fratello guide reported examples in an illustrative €500–€1,000 range when it was written; that dated figure is not a current quote. The guide also explains why the best Omega depends on whether you prioritize dress wear, diving or chronograph history: Omega Seamaster De Ville guide.

Seiko Grand Seiko First: best for precision heritage

Seiko introduced Grand Seiko in 1960 with Caliber 3180, large legible indexes and hands, Diashock shock resistance, hacking seconds and fine adjustment. Seiko says the first model’s accuracy met the chronometer standards of the time. Its significance lies in the effort to establish high-precision Japanese mechanical watchmaking; it is a dress-oriented choice rather than a diver or chronograph. See Grand Seiko’s official history.

  • 4R39 CALIBER: equipped with the reliable caliber 4R39 automatic movement, this accurate men's watch keeps precise time

Seiko Sportsmatic 5: best practical day-date choice

The 1963 Sportsmatic 5 combined waterproof construction, day and date display, shock protection and Seiko’s automatic Magic Lever winding system. It is a useful pick for someone who values everyday functionality and historical importance over the prestige of a famous luxury reference. Seiko’s museum also records the brand’s role as Official Timer of the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games, which helped raise its international profile, and the introduction of the world’s first quartz watch in December 1969. These milestones appear in the Seiko Museum’s history.

Seiko Crown Chronograph: best Olympic-era chronograph

Seiko’s first Crown Chronographs arrived in 1964. They offer a Japanese alternative to the better-known Swiss motorsport chronographs and connect the decade’s timing-watch story with Seiko’s Olympic-era presence. Confirm the exact reference, movement and condition before buying; the name alone does not establish that a watch is original or correctly configured.

  • SEIKO WATCH – Seiko SRPL73 Presage wristwatch.

  • WATCH DIAMETER – 39.5 mm.

Seiko 62MAS: best early Japanese diver

Introduced in 1965, the 62MAS is a landmark early Seiko diver. It is a compelling choice for collectors interested in the development of Japanese dive watches, but an old diver should not be assumed safe for swimming. Seiko-specific vintage references and the challenge of finding iconic models in good condition are covered in Fratello’s Seiko vintage-watch guide.

Seiko 6139: best for automatic-chronograph history

Seiko’s 6139 automatic-chronograph movement dates to 1969, placing it at the decade’s mechanical chronograph frontier. It represents a different collecting interest from a manual-wind Carrera or Daytona: the appeal is the movement’s place in the automatic-chronograph story. Verify the movement and reference against reliable documentation, since age and model reputation do not guarantee originality.

Rolex Deep Sea Special: best experimental engineering landmark

The Deep Sea Special is notable as an experimental watch, not a normal consumer recommendation. In 1960, attached outside the Trieste bathyscaphe, it remained in working order after the vessel reached 10,916 metres (37,800 feet), according to Rolex’s official timeline. That achievement makes it an engineering milestone rather than a practical vintage purchase.

Which 1960s watch is the best buy for you?

What matters most Shortlist Why it fits
Clear, restrained tool-watch design Rolex Explorer ref. 1016 Field-watch legibility and expedition heritage.
Travel function Rolex GMT-Master A purpose-built time-zone navigation watch with a day/night bezel.
Racing chronograph Rolex Daytona or Heuer Carrera ref. 2447 Both have motorsport roots; the Carrera’s design emphasized legibility.
Dress-watch versatility Omega Seamaster De Ville A refined profile with a range of movement, date and case options.
Japanese precision history Seiko Grand Seiko First A 1960 milestone with Caliber 3180 and period chronometer-standard accuracy.
Day-date practicality Seiko Sportsmatic 5 Automatic winding, day/date, shock protection and waterproof construction at launch.
Early Japanese diving history Seiko 62MAS A landmark 1965 Seiko diver.
Experimental depth milestone Rolex Deep Sea Special Historically remarkable, but not a normal consumer watch.

For a first vintage purchase, prioritize the condition and serviceability of the specific example over the status of its model. A less celebrated watch in sound, documented condition may be a more sensible choice than an iconic reference with uncertain parts or history.

How to check whether a 1960s watch is original

  1. Identify the exact reference and movement. Ask for clear photographs and have the reference and caliber checked against period documentation or a qualified specialist’s records.
  2. Compare visible components. Inspect the dial, hands, bezel, case and movement for consistency with that reference. Replaced or refinished parts can affect both originality and value.
  3. Assess the case. Look for softened edges or altered geometry that may indicate heavy polishing. Case wear is not automatically a defect, but it should be understood.
  4. Request service and ownership records. A documented service history helps establish what has been replaced and whether the watch has been maintained. Missing records are not proof of wrongdoing, but they leave more uncertainty.
  5. Have a watchmaker inspect it before relying on it. A qualified specialist can assess movement condition and test water resistance. Until a watch is tested, do not rely on its original water-resistance rating.

What to expect from vintage-watch prices

There is no dependable single price for a “best” 1960s watch: model, originality, condition, provenance and service needs can change the value substantially, and current prices and inventory are not established here. The historical €500–€1,000 example for the Seamaster De Ville is dated and illustrative only. Treat listings and asking prices as market snapshots, not as evidence that a watch is authentic or worth the amount requested.
