There is no single best watch under €1,000: the right choice depends on whether you want a traditional automatic, a diver-style watch, or a smartwatch. In an April 8, 2024 Fratello article titled “Gerard’s Picks,” author Gerard Nijenbrinks offered one of each, while making clear that his choices were personal rather than a universal ranking.
What “best under €1,000” means in this list
Nijenbrinks framed the question as “Which of these watches would you spend €1,000 on?” His three picks are not direct substitutes: they serve different tastes and roles, and one is an Apple smartwatch rather than traditional watchmaking. Their reported prices and specifications are from 2024, so treat them as historical reference points—not current offers or confirmed 2026 availability.
Gerard Nijenbrinks’s three picks
Yema Flygraf Flieger French Air Force: a pilot-style automatic
Nijenbrinks’s daily-wear and pilot-style choice was the Yema Flygraf Flieger French Air Force. The 2024 article reported a price of €990 and described a 40 mm Grade 2 titanium case and case back, double-domed sapphire crystal, 100 m water resistance, and an in-house automatic caliber with a 42-hour power reserve. It gave the movement’s adjustment as ±10 seconds per day and noted an Armée de l’Air & de l’Espace dial logo and branded canvas strap. These are the article’s reported details, not a confirmation of current model specifications or current pricing.
Ligure Tartaruga: a diver-style option with a configuration caveat
The Ligure Tartaruga was the more substantial diver-style choice. The article reported €950 for a stainless-steel-bracelet configuration and described a rotating bezel; its conclusion listed dimensions of 41 mm in diameter, 42.5 mm in length, and 13 mm in thickness.

There is an important availability qualification: Nijenbrinks said the pictured configuration was a release candidate, one-off, or prototype assembled following his suggestion, and he was unsure whether Ligure would release it. The article therefore does not establish that this exact configuration became an official production model. Check the maker’s current catalog and specifications before treating it as a purchasable option.
Apple Watch Series 9: the smartwatch alternative
Nijenbrinks included the Apple Watch Series 9 as a budget competitor, while acknowledging that it is not traditional watchmaking. He noted that an iPhone is required for initial setup and viewed the watch in the context of Apple’s ecosystem. Those points describe his 2024 framing; check Apple’s current compatibility and software information for practical buying advice.

Two other Fratello contributor lists from March 2024 show how broad this price category can be. Daan de Groot’s selections included the automatic Baltic Hermétique Tourer, solar Seiko SSC937, kinetic Vero Forest Service Edition Hotshot, and digital-quartz Autodromo Group C. Jorg Weppelink focused in part on travel and field use, naming the GMT-focused RZE Fortitude GMT and Traska Venturer GMT, plus the automatic Serica 6190 Field Chronometer. He also mentioned the Certina DS Action Diver Titanium and Nezumi Aviera GMT.
Those are examples of 2024 editorial selections, not a verified current shortlist. Together, they illustrate that shoppers may be choosing among automatic, solar, kinetic, and digital-quartz movements, as well as pilot, diver, field, or GMT designs.

How to choose among watches at this price
- Decide what you want to wear it for. A pilot-style daily watch, a diver-style design, and a smartwatch solve different needs; start with your intended use rather than the price ceiling alone.
- Choose the kind of timekeeping that suits you. An automatic, solar, kinetic, or digital-quartz watch involves a different ownership experience from a smartwatch. Consider whether you want a traditional mechanical watch or electronic features.
- Check fit and materials. Compare case dimensions and material, then consider how a bracelet or strap wears on your wrist. Diameter alone does not establish how a watch will fit.
- Verify the exact configuration. A price or specification can refer to a particular strap or bracelet, and the Ligure example shows why a pictured prototype should not be assumed to be a production model.
- Confirm current details before buying. Check the maker or authorized seller for current price, stock, regional availability, and model specifications. The 2024 articles do not establish today’s offers.
