Certina DS Action GMT: the travel choice
Lex’s functional pick is the Certina DS Action GMT Powermatic 80, reference C032.929.26.051.00. Its defining feature is a flyer GMT: the local-time 12-hour hand moves in steps when you change time zones, while the main timekeeping hand stays put. The date follows the adjusted hour hand. That makes it convenient for travelers who want to reset local time without disturbing their home-time reference. Read the second time zone against the bidirectional 24-hour bezel.
Movement and practical details
- The Powermatic 80.661 movement (ETA C07.661) runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and has an 80-hour power reserve, according to Lex’s article.
- The steel case measures 41 × 49.3 × 13.8 mm, and the stated water resistance is 200m.
- At 13.8 mm thick, it is a substantial watch; check how that height and the 41 mm width sit under a cuff and on your wrist before choosing it.
Lex likes the retro look and the pairing of bezel and strap, but considers the case refinement less exceptional than the design. Those are the author’s judgments, rather than independent hands-on findings here. The article’s €1,170 price is historical, dated May 15, 2024.

King Seiko SPB369: a restrained textured dial
For a more classic round watch, Lex chose the King Seiko SPB369. Its steel case is 39 mm wide and 11.9 mm thick, with a 46.1 mm lug-to-lug length. Those measurements are useful together: diameter alone does not tell you how far the watch will span your wrist.
The cream dial has a subtle, linen-like texture; “linen” describes its appearance, not a confirmed dial material. Lex’s case for the watch rests on its proportions, crisp case shape, finishing and a vintage-leaning look that remains restrained. It is the less overtly sporty alternative to the Certina, and a better fit for someone who wants dial texture without a bold color.

Lex says they would prefer it on a high-quality leather strap rather than the bracelet. That is a personal styling preference, not a guarantee that any strap will fit: verify lug width, end-link fit and attachment compatibility for the exact watch before ordering. Lex listed the SPB369 at €1,950 in May 2024; that figure should not be treated as today’s offer.
Oris Rectangular: the distinctive red-dial option
Lex’s most shape-led selection is the Oris Rectangular, reference 01 561 7783 4068-07 5 19 18. The case measures 25.5 × 38 mm. Because it is rectangular, those dimensions describe its width and length rather than a conventional round-watch diameter. The red dial and compact proportions are central to Lex’s choice; this is a distinctive alternative to a conventional all-purpose round watch.

The article also points to stepped case sides with an Art Deco association, railroad-track markings, lume plots and sword hands. Lex preferred it to the Longines Dolcevita L5.767.4.73.9, which the article lists at 28.2 × 47 mm and €2,000. The Longines is a genuine alternative if you want a rectangular watch but prefer its larger dimensions; Lex favored the smaller Oris and its lively red dial. The Oris’s listed price was €2,150 in the May 2024 article.
