Robert-Jan Broer’s five picks for watches under €2,500 span pilot, dive, chronograph and dress-watch styles. His Fratello article, published May 20, 2024, lists prices at that time—not current offers—so confirm the exact reference and local price before buying. For a daily watch, Broer says he would probably choose the Fortis Flieger F-39 or Oris Aquis Date Upcycle.

How to choose among the five
- Choose the Fortis if legibility, a usable 12-hour bezel, bracelet construction and tool-watch character matter most.
- Choose the Oris if you want a 300 m diver and a dial that makes each watch visually different.
- Choose the Tissot if a hand-wound mechanical chronograph and retro motorsport styling are the draw.
- Choose the Sinn if you want a traditional pilot chronograph and are comfortable with its thicker case and the standard version’s acrylic crystal.
- Choose the Raymond Weil if a slim case, dressier appearance and the lower historical price are priorities.
Fortis Flieger F-39: the rugged pilot/tool pick
The F-39 combines a 39 mm case with a 50 mm lug-to-lug span, so its diameter alone does not tell the whole fit story. At 12.5 mm thick, it is the most straightforward tool-watch proposition in this group: a legible display, date, 12-hour bezel and 200 m water resistance. Its movement is based on the Sellita SW200-1 and has a reported 38-hour power reserve.
Broer singled out the Block bracelet and described the watch as rugged. Its price in his May 2024 article was €2,400. Check the exact bracelet and reference included with a current listing rather than assuming that the pictured configuration is standard everywhere.

Oris Aquis Date Upcycle: a diver with a one-off dial
The 43.5 mm Aquis Date Upcycle is the largest watch by stated diameter in this selection. Its dial is made from recycled PET plastic, and the resulting pattern varies from watch to watch; the dial’s individuality is part of the appeal, but it also means a product photograph may not show the exact pattern you receive. The article reports 300 m water resistance and a Sellita-based Oris caliber 733.
The €2,450 price Broer gave in 2024 was for the 43.5 mm caliber 733 version. He noted that it does not have the more elaborate quick-release bracelet features available on the higher-priced caliber 400 variant. He also said the updated case and bracelet felt more comfortable during his brief encounter with the watch at Watches and Wonders; that is his personal observation, not a comparative wear test.

Oris’s official Netherlands English catalog currently lists the Oris X Cervo Volante at €2,250 and the Divers Date at €2,450. Those listings show that those specific catalog entries sit below the ceiling in that market; they do not confirm the current price or availability of the Aquis Date Upcycle. See the Oris Netherlands English catalog and check the exact reference locally.
Tissot PR516 Mechanical Chronograph: hand-wound and heritage-led
The PR516 is the selection’s hand-wound chronograph. The Fratello article identifies its ETA A05.291 movement as based on the Valjoux 7753 and reports a 68-hour power reserve. Its 41 mm steel case measures 49 mm lug-to-lug and 14 mm thick, a useful combination of numbers to compare against a watch you already know fits.

The styling draws on Tissot’s PR516 history, which the article traces to 1965. Broer says the new dial colors nod to the 1968 chronograph and highlights the dial colors and black-and-white bezel. The price reported in May 2024 was €1,975. The article does not state water resistance, so check the exact reference’s current specification if that matters to your use.
Sinn 103 St: classic pilot chronograph, with a configuration trade-off
The 41 mm Sinn 103 St is 15.9 mm thick and rated to 200 m water resistance in the version described. The standard version discussed by Broer has an acrylic crystal, which is a meaningful distinction if you prefer a different crystal material. The article identifies its movement as the Concepto C99001.

Configuration changes both price and what comes on the watch: Broer reported €2,500 on a steel bracelet or €2,150 on a leather strap in May 2024. Those figures leave no room under the ceiling for the bracelet version if €2,500 is a strict limit, and they should not be treated as current quotes. Confirm crystal, strap or bracelet, and exact reference before comparing offers.

Broer’s preferred salmon-dial Millesime is 39.5 mm across and just 9.5 mm thick, making it the slimmest option here by the reported measurements. It has 50 m water resistance, a display back, a gray calfskin strap and a self-winding RW4200 movement derived from the Sellita SW200-1. Its stated May 2024 price was €1,950.

Broer favored the salmon dial and lower price over a similar, more expensive Longines option. That preference is an editorial judgment, not a claim that the Millesime is universally better. The Fratello article does not state its lug-to-lug measurement.
What “under €2,500” means before you buy
All five prices are historical figures published on May 20, 2024. They do not establish today’s retail price, stock, regional taxes, or what a retailer includes in the box. The €2,500 Sinn bracelet configuration was at the ceiling, not below it; the Sinn on leather was the lower-priced configuration reported.
- Check the exact model reference and price with an authorized retailer in your country.
- Compare the quoted total, including applicable taxes and delivery, and confirm whether the listed configuration includes a bracelet or strap.
- Check diameter, thickness and especially lug-to-lug against your wrist or a watch you already wear comfortably.
- Confirm the warranty, availability and specifications for the exact reference; do not assume details carry over from a similarly named variant.
- For the Upcycle dial, ask for a photo of the actual watch if its individual pattern matters to you.
Broer’s roundup is a curated set of personal picks, not a controlled comparison of accuracy, durability, service costs or every watch available under €2,500.
