There is no single best pair of wireless earbuds. The right choice depends first on your phone, then on fit, noise cancellation, workout needs, and budget. For most Android and mixed-device buyers, the Sony WF-1000XM6 is the safest premium recommendation. For iPhone owners, choose the Apple AirPods Pro 3. Samsung Galaxy users should start with the Galaxy Buds4 Pro, while Pixel owners should look at the Google Pixel Buds Pro 2.

Choose the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) if maximum noise cancellation matters most, the Technics EAH-AZ100 for sound quality and three-device multipoint, the EarFun Air Pro 4+ or Soundcore Liberty 4 NC under $100, the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 for demanding workouts, and the Shokz OpenFit 2 if you need to hear your surroundings. These recommendations reflect the latest available testing and product information through August 9, 2026; prices, firmware, and availability should be checked again before publication or purchase.

Important: This is a research-led buying guide, not a first-person claim that one writer personally tested dozens of earbuds. The recommendations compare manufacturer specifications with independent testing from sources including RTINGS, SoundGuys, TechRadar, Tom's Guide, and NBC Select. Those sources disagree on the overall winner because they assign different weight to sound, ANC, comfort, ecosystem features, and price.

Quick answer: which wireless earbuds should you buy?

Earbuds Best for U.S. price context Battery with ANC Water resistance Multipoint Main weakness
Sony WF-1000XM6 Most Android and mixed-device buyers $329.99 MSRP 8 hours rated; 24 hours with case IPX4 earbuds Two devices Expensive, large fit, only IPX4
AirPods Pro 3 iPhone owners $249 list price in current NBC Select coverage 8 hours; 24 hours with case IP57 earbuds and case No conventional Bluetooth multipoint Best features require Apple devices
Bose QC Ultra Earbuds 2nd Gen Maximum ANC $299 list; $249 sale price at research time 6 hours, or 4 with Immersive Audio IPX4 earbuds Yes Shorter battery life and bulky case
Technics EAH-AZ100 Sound and multi-device use $299.99 launch MSRP 10 hours with ANC using AAC Check current manufacturer specifications Three devices Fewer ecosystem-specific features
Galaxy Buds4 Pro Samsung Galaxy phones $249 launch price Varies by ANC and test mode IP57 earbuds Best switching on Galaxy devices Reduced functionality on non-Samsung devices
Pixel Buds Pro 2 Pixel and mainstream Android $229 list; $179 sale price at research time 8 hours; 30 hours with case IP54 earbuds; IPX4 case Yes, two source devices Full features require Android
EarFun Air Pro 4+ Features under $100 $99.99 MSRP 6 hours 17 minutes measured; 12-hour claim under different conditions Verify current product rating Yes ANC and battery are not flagship-level
Soundcore Liberty 4 NC Budget ANC and battery $99.99 MSRP 8 hours rated; 40 hours with case IPX4 earbuds Yes Not as refined as premium rivals
Nothing Ear (a) Inexpensive everyday listening $79 former price; $59 sale price at research time 5.5 hours; 24.5 hours with case IP54 earbuds; IPX2 case Dual connection Weak microphones and low case rating
Powerbeats Pro 2 Most secure intense workouts Check current price 10 hours; 45 hours with case Check current manufacturer rating Works with Apple and Android Large earhook and charging case
Shokz OpenFit 2 Open-ear awareness $179.95 list; $139.95 sale at research time Up to 11 hours IP55 Two devices No ANC, isolation, or strong bass

Battery figures in the table are not directly comparable. Manufacturer ratings often use ANC off, a particular codec, moderate volume, and laboratory conditions. Independent measurements can be much lower: SoundGuys measured the EarFun Air Pro 4+ at 6 hours and 17 minutes with ANC enabled against its 12-hour manufacturer claim.

The best wireless earbuds, in detail

1. Sony WF-1000XM6: best all-around Android and cross-platform earbuds

Buy these if: You want excellent sound, strong ANC, good microphones, multipoint, LDAC, and a mature app without committing to Apple, Samsung, or Google.

The Sony WF-1000XM6 is the broadest recommendation for Android users and households that switch between phones, computers, tablets, and operating systems. RTINGS and SoundGuys currently place it at or near the top because it combines sound quality, noise cancellation, microphone performance, customization, codec support, and connectivity rather than optimizing for only one category. SoundGuys measured approximately 88% average noise reduction and praised the microphone system, while RTINGS calls it the best wireless earbud it has tested.

#1 Best Overall
JBL Vibe Beam - True Wireless Earbuds - Black
  • JBL Deep Bass Sound: Get the most from your mixes with high-quality audio from secure, reliable earbuds with 8mm drivers featuring JBL Deep Bass Sound
  • Comfortable fit: The ergonomic, stick-closed design of the JBL Vibe Beam fits so comfortably you may forget you're wearing them. The closed design excludes external sounds, enhancing the bass performance
  • Up to 32 (8h + 24h) hours of battery life and speed charging: With 8 hours of battery life in the earbuds and 24 in the case, the JBL Vibe Beam provide all-day audio. When you need more power, you can speed charge an extra two hours in just 10 minutes.
  • Hands-free calls with VoiceAware: When you're making hands-free stereo calls on the go, VoiceAware lets you balance how much of your own voice you hear while talking with others
  • Water and dust resistant: From the beach to the bike trail, the IP54-certified earbuds and IPX2 charging case are water and dust resistant for all-day experiences

The earbuds support two-device Bluetooth multipoint, wireless charging, and Sony's Sound Connect app. The app provides EQ and feature controls, and supports options such as LDAC and DSEE Extreme. The rated battery life is eight hours from the earbuds and 24 hours including the case, although enabling LDAC or other demanding features can change real-world endurance.

Do not buy them automatically if: You have small ears, need more than splash resistance, or want the smallest possible charging case. The XM6's IPX4 rating is modest, and its relatively large body may not create a comfortable seal for smaller ears. TechRadar found its ANC and fit less convincing than competing models even while praising its sound. That disagreement is a useful reminder that ANC depends heavily on ear shape and seal, not only electronics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Alternative: Choose the Technics EAH-AZ100 if three-device multipoint and critical listening matter more than Sony's broader ANC and app ecosystem.

2. Apple AirPods Pro 3: best for iPhone owners

Buy these if: You use an iPhone alongside an iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, or other Apple devices and value seamless pairing, device handoff, Find My, spatial audio, and hearing-related features.

AirPods Pro 3 are the easiest recommendation for most iPhone owners. Their advantage is not merely sound quality; it is the number of small tasks that work without configuration. Pairing, switching among Apple devices, locating an earbud, Personalized Spatial Audio, and system-level controls are substantially smoother inside Apple's ecosystem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple rates the earbuds for up to eight hours with ANC enabled and up to 24 hours with the case and ANC enabled. Both the earbuds and case have an IP57 rating. The package includes five silicone tip sizes—XXS, XS, S, M, and L—which improves the odds of finding a seal, though no selection of tips guarantees a fit for every ear.

AirPods Pro 3 also support Adaptive Audio, Transparency, Personalized Spatial Audio, Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, Hearing Protection, Live Translation, and heart-rate sensing during workouts. These features are not universally available: heart-rate workout sensing requires an iPhone running iOS 26 or later, and hearing and translation features can depend on device, operating system, language, and region. They are not substitutes for a clinical hearing evaluation.

Do not buy them automatically if: You use Android, regularly switch between unrelated Bluetooth devices, or specifically need conventional multipoint. AirPods can connect to non-Apple devices for basic Bluetooth playback, but the full experience is not the same, and they do not provide conventional multipoint for arbitrary Bluetooth sources. The case also does not include a USB-C charging cable.

Alternative: The Sony WF-1000XM6 is the better cross-platform choice; the Galaxy Buds4 Pro is better optimized for a Samsung Galaxy phone.

3. Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen): best noise cancellation

Buy these if: You travel by plane or train, commute beside traffic, work in a noisy office, or prioritize reducing background noise above battery life and compactness.

The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) are the clearest choice when silence is the priority. Bose uses CustomTune to personalize the sound and ANC to the shape of your ear. The package includes three eartips and three stability-band sizes, giving nine fit combinations. That fit flexibility matters because a poor seal can undermine even excellent ANC.

The earbuds are rated for six hours with Immersive Audio off and four hours with it on. The case provides approximately three additional charges. Bose includes wireless charging in the box, supports Bluetooth multipoint, and rates the earbuds IPX4.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The default Bose presentation is bass-forward, so listeners who prefer a more neutral balance may want to use the app's EQ. The earbuds and case are also relatively large. Six hours is average or below average for a current premium model, and Immersive Audio reduces it further.

Do not buy them solely because of a decibel claim. ANC performance varies with frequency, wind, ear seal, and test method. Bose may be the best choice for your ears and travel routine, but no advertised maximum noise-reduction number predicts every listener's result.

Alternative: AirPods Pro 3 are a stronger travel choice for iPhone users who also want Apple's hearing and device features; Sony's XM6 offers longer rated battery life and broader codec support.

4. Technics EAH-AZ100: best sound-and-features balance

Buy these if: You listen critically, use several devices, and want a premium pair that is not tied to one phone brand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Technics EAH-AZ100 is the strongest alternative to Sony for buyers who care about sound and multi-device flexibility. Its standout feature is three-device multipoint, which is more useful than ordinary two-device multipoint if you regularly move among a phone, work laptop, and tablet. It also supports Qi wireless charging, LE Audio, Auracast, and LC3.

Technics rates the AZ100 for up to 10 hours with ANC enabled using AAC and approximately 28 hours with the case under its test conditions. A fifth ML eartip size is included, which can help users whose fit falls between conventional sizes.

Apple AirPods Pro 3 Wireless Earbuds with Active Noise Cancellation
  • WORLD’S BEST IN-EAR ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — Removes up to 2x more unwanted noise than AirPods Pro 2* so you can stay fully immersed in the moment.*
  • BREAKTHROUGH AUDIO PERFORMANCE — Experience breathtaking, three-dimensional audio with AirPods Pro 3. A new acoustic architecture delivers transformed bass, detailed clarity so you can hear every instrument, and stunningly vivid vocals.
  • HEART RATE SENSING — Built-in heart rate sensing lets you track your heart rate and calories burned for up to 50 different workout types.* With iPhone, you will have access to the Move ring, step count, and the new Workout Buddy,* powered by Apple Intelligence.*
  • LIVE TRANSLATION — Communicate across language barriers using Live Translation,* enabled by Apple Intelligence.*
  • EXTENDED BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 8 hours of listening time with Active Noise Cancellation on a single charge. Or up to 10 hours in Transparency using the Hearing Aid feature.*

Calling something the best-sounding earbud is inherently subjective. The AZ100's advantage is its combination of detailed sound, comfort, codecs, wireless charging, and multipoint—not a universal guarantee that every listener will prefer its frequency balance. Fit, EQ, recording quality, and the source device still matter more than codec branding for many people.

Do not buy them if: You mainly want Apple, Samsung, or Pixel-specific features. Technics is platform-neutral, which is an advantage for mixed-device households but a disadvantage if you want deep ecosystem integration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Alternative: Choose Sony for stronger all-around Android support and Bose if ANC matters more than sound and battery balance.

5. Samsung Galaxy Buds4 Pro: best for Samsung Galaxy phones

Buy these if: You own a Galaxy phone and want Samsung-specific codec support, spatial audio, device switching, voice controls, and Galaxy AI-related features.

The Galaxy Buds4 Pro are Samsung's natural flagship choice for Galaxy owners. General availability began March 11, 2026, alongside the Galaxy S26 series, at a U.S. launch price of $249. Samsung lists Bluetooth 6.1, Auracast, LC3, AAC, SBC, and proprietary Samsung codecs. The earbuds have an IP57 rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The important qualification is platform dependence. Samsung explicitly notes that some features are unavailable or reduced on non-Samsung devices. The best codec, spatial-audio features, automatic switching, and certain voice or AI controls require compatible Galaxy hardware. A non-Samsung Android user may get basic playback and some app features but should not pay for capabilities they cannot use.

Battery figures need particular care. Android Central lists seven hours from the earbuds and 30 hours with the case, while Samsung's launch table gives lower figures under specific ANC-on conditions. Treat battery life as a test-mode result, not one universal number.

Do not buy them for an iPhone. They may connect, but an iPhone owner will lose much of the reason to choose them over AirPods Pro 3 or a platform-neutral model.

Alternative: Pixel Buds Pro 2 suit Pixel users; Sony or Technics suit people who use several brands of devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Google Pixel Buds Pro 2: best for Pixel and mainstream Android users

Buy these if: You want a relatively small Android-oriented earbud with a stabilizer fin, wireless charging, multipoint, strong rated battery life, and Google integration.

Pixel Buds Pro 2 are a sensible middle ground for Pixel owners. Google rates them for up to eight hours with ANC on and 30 hours total with the case, or 12 hours with ANC off and 48 hours total. They use Bluetooth 5.4, include four eartip sizes, and have a wireless charging case. The stabilizer fin can improve retention without the bulk of an earhook.

Google says the earbuds can pair with Bluetooth 4.0-or-newer devices, including iPhones. That means basic Bluetooth compatibility, not equal feature access. Full access requires an Android phone, Google account, and internet connection. Multipoint and audio switching can automatically move between the last two connected source devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The earbuds are IP54-rated and the case is IPX4-rated. That is suitable for sweat and incidental water, not immersion. Some ears appreciate the stabilizer fin; others feel pressure from it after long sessions.

Alternative: AirPods Pro 3 are the better choice for an iPhone, while Sony offers a more platform-neutral premium experience.

7. EarFun Air Pro 4+: best feature set under $100

At a $99.99 MSRP, the EarFun Air Pro 4+ offers an unusually broad set of features: Bluetooth 6.0, aptX Lossless, LDAC, Auracast, multipoint, dual drivers, ANC, and a 10-band EQ. SoundGuys measured approximately 80% average noise reduction, which is strong value even though it does not approach the best premium ANC implementations in every situation.

Battery claims show why test conditions matter. EarFun lists up to 12 hours, but SoundGuys measured 6 hours and 17 minutes with ANC enabled. Codec choice, ANC, volume, and source hardware all affect the result. High-bandwidth codecs can also reduce battery life or change how multipoint works.

Soundcore by Anker P20i True Wireless Earbuds, with Big Bass, 30H Playtime
  • Powerful Bass: soundcore P20i true wireless earbuds have oversized 10mm drivers that deliver powerful sound with boosted bass so you can lose yourself in your favorite songs.
  • Personalized Listening Experience: Use the soundcore app to customize the controls and choose from 22 EQ presets. With "Find My Earbuds", a lost earbud can emit noise to help you locate it.
  • Long Playtime, Fast Charging: Get 10 hours of battery life on a single charge with a case that extends it to 30 hours. If P20i true wireless earbuds are low on power, a quick 10-minute charge will give you 2 hours of playtime.
  • Portable On-the-Go Design: soundcore P20i true wireless earbuds and the charging case are compact and lightweight with a lanyard attached. It's small enough to slip in your pocket, or clip on your bag or keys–so you never worry about space.
  • AI-Enhanced Clear Calls: 2 built-in mics and an AI algorithm work together to pick up your voice so that you never have to shout over the phone.

Do not buy them expecting flagship refinement. The feature list is impressive, but ANC, calls, app experience, and long-term support should not be assumed to equal Sony or Bose solely from the specifications.

Alternative: Soundcore Liberty 4 NC is the safer budget pick for a widely established combination of ANC, multipoint, wireless charging, and battery life.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Soundcore Liberty 4 NC: best budget ANC and battery combination

Buy these if: You want ANC, multipoint, wireless charging, LDAC, and long battery life without approaching premium prices.

The Liberty 4 NC is rated for up to 10 hours per charge and 50 hours with the case in Normal mode. With ANC enabled, Soundcore lists eight hours per charge and 40 hours with the case. Bluetooth 5.3, adaptive ANC, six microphones, HearID 2.0 EQ, and multipoint make it a particularly complete budget package. A 10-minute charge is rated for four hours of playback.

It is a good value for commuters and everyday listeners, but its sound, ANC, microphones, and app should be understood as strong for the money—not equivalent to Sony, Bose, or Apple flagships. IPX4 protects the earbuds against splashes and sweat; it does not make the earbuds or case waterproof.

LDAC, ANC, and multipoint may not work in exactly the same way simultaneously. Check the app and your phone's codec behavior instead of assuming every advertised mode can run at once.

Soundcore specifications

9. Nothing Ear (a): best inexpensive everyday earbuds

Buy these if: You want light earbuds with enjoyable sound, ANC, LDAC, dual-device connection, and a polished app at a low price.

Nothing's U.S. page showed a $79 former price and a $59 sale price at the research cutoff. Treat the lower figure as a sale price, not a permanent MSRP. The Ear (a) uses an 11mm dynamic driver and supports LDAC, AAC, SBC, dual connection, ANC, and app-based EQ. Its rated battery life is up to 9.5 hours per charge and 42.5 hours with the case with ANC off, or 5.5 hours and 24.5 hours with ANC on. TechRadar measured those same 5.5-hour and 9.5-hour earbud figures in its testing.

The earbuds have an IP54 rating, but the case is only IPX2-rated. That difference matters: keep the case away from sweat and rain even if the earbuds are suitable for ordinary workouts. ANC is rated up to 45 dB, but that manufacturer figure should not be compared directly with independent attenuation measurements from other products.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not choose them for frequent outdoor calls. Microphone performance is not their strongest category, especially in challenging surroundings, and their ANC is useful rather than flagship-grade.

Alternative: The CMF Buds 2 costs roughly $50 and is a cheaper music-first option; Liberty 4 NC is the better budget choice if calls, multipoint, and battery matter more.

Nothing product page · Nothing battery information · TechRadar testing

10. Beats Powerbeats Pro 2: best secure earhook workout earbuds

Buy these if: You run, lift, or train intensely and will accept a larger design in exchange for a much more secure fit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Powerbeats Pro 2 use an earhook rather than relying solely on an in-ear seal. That makes them the more defensible choice for vigorous workouts where ordinary earbuds tend to loosen or fall out. Tom's Guide lists 10 hours of earbud battery life and 45 hours with the case. They also include ANC and a heart-rate monitor.

The trade-offs are substantial: the earbuds and charging case are bulky, they are less convenient for pockets and office use, and Tom's Guide found the heart-rate monitor inconsistent and noted limitations in sound quality. Treat the heart-rate feature as a consumer workout aid, not medical-grade measurement.

Try them with your actual equipment. Earhooks can interfere with glasses, helmets, masks, thick hair, or certain hats. A secure earbud that conflicts with your gear is not secure in practice.

Alternative: Choose Powerbeats Fit if you want a smaller wingtip design instead of a full earhook.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tom's Guide workout testing

11. Beats Powerbeats Fit: best smaller workout alternative

Buy these if: You want workout stability from a flexible wingtip instead of the larger Powerbeats Pro 2 hook.

The Powerbeats Fit cost $199.99 at list price and work with both Apple and Android devices. Their flexible secure-fit wingtips, ANC, and Transparency mode target users who need more retention than a conventional earbud but less bulk than an earhook.

Battery life is rated at up to seven hours per earbud with ANC and Transparency off, six hours with either feature enabled, and up to 30 hours total with the case without those modes. With ANC or Transparency enabled, total rated battery life falls to 24 hours. A five-minute charge provides up to one hour of playback. The earbuds and case are IPX4-rated.

Beats Powerbeats Fit specifications

12. Shokz OpenFit 2: best open-ear earbuds

Buy these if: You need to hear traffic, coworkers, children, or other surroundings while listening.

The Shokz OpenFit 2 sits outside the ear canal rather than sealing it. That makes it a fundamentally different product from every sealed in-ear recommendation above. It provides up to 11 hours of battery life, IP55 water resistance, and multipoint for up to two devices. NBC Select lists it as its open-ear pick, with a $179.95 list price and a $139.95 sale price at the research cutoff.

There is no ANC, no Transparency mode, and no ear tip. The benefit is awareness; the cost is isolation, bass impact, privacy, and performance in loud environments. Open-ear earbuds are a poor choice for airplane cabins or loud public transit, and sound leakage may bother people nearby. Open-ear also does not mean hearing protection.

Alternative: If you need isolation and strong bass, choose a sealed in-ear model such as Bose, Sony, or AirPods Pro 3 instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shokz specifications · NBC Select open-ear recommendation

13. CMF Buds 2: best very cheap option

Buy these if: You want a feature-rich music and podcast pair around $50 and do not need premium codecs or excellent outdoor call quality.

Tom's Guide positions the CMF Buds 2 as a roughly $50 option with ANC, spatial-audio-style processing, Dirac sound customization, and a strong companion app. The advertised battery life is 12 hours in the earbuds and 55 hours with the case; Tom's Guide measured approximately 11 hours in use.

The limitation is the microphone. Outdoor call performance was weak in testing, and the earbuds do not include hi-res streaming codecs. They are therefore a better music-and-value recommendation than a work-call recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Alternative: Nothing Ear (a) offers a more polished step-up experience, while Soundcore Liberty 4 NC is better for serious ANC and multipoint use.

Choose earbuds by your phone

iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch

Start with AirPods Pro 3. Apple earbuds work best with Apple devices because pairing, switching, Find My, Personalized Spatial Audio, hearing features, and system controls are integrated. Beats models are also sensible if workout stability matters. Sony, Bose, and Technics will provide ordinary Bluetooth playback and app support, but they cannot reproduce Apple's full system-level experience.

Samsung Galaxy

Start with Galaxy Buds4 Pro if you want Samsung's proprietary codec, Galaxy-specific spatial audio, switching, voice controls, and AI features. Verify your exact Galaxy model before buying because Samsung features are device-dependent. Sony, Bose, and Technics are better choices if you also use an iPhone, Windows laptop, or non-Samsung Android device.

Google Pixel

Start with Pixel Buds Pro 2 if you want Google integration, a stabilizer fin, wireless charging, and Android multipoint. They can pair with an iPhone for basic audio, but full feature access requires Android, a Google account, and internet access.

What the important specifications actually mean

ANC and Transparency

Active noise cancellation uses microphones and an opposing signal to reduce outside noise. It is generally most effective against steady, low-frequency sounds such as airplane engines, trains, air conditioners, and road rumble. It does not erase every voice, sudden sound, or high-frequency noise.

Transparency or ambient mode uses microphones to pass outside sound through the earbuds. A good implementation sounds natural enough for conversation; a poor one may sound hollow or electronic. Do not assume that an earbud with ANC automatically has excellent Transparency mode.

Ignore isolated claims such as up to 45 dB or a percentage of noise reduction unless the test conditions are clear. Independent attenuation results are more useful, and even those vary with frequency and ear seal. SoundGuys recommends looking at average measured reduction rather than a single peak number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fit is a performance specification

A loose earbud does more than feel uncomfortable. It reduces bass, passive isolation, and ANC performance at the same time. Tip size affects the acoustic seal, not merely comfort. Try every supplied tip, insert the earbud according to the manual, rotate it into place, and use the manufacturer's fit test when available.

Foam tips can create a stronger seal but may feel warmer, wear out faster, and require more careful hygiene. Stabilizer fins can help many users but can create pressure. Wingtips and earhooks improve workout retention but may interfere with glasses, helmets, masks, or thick hair. If the shell itself creates pressure, changing tips may not solve the problem.

Multipoint is not the same as pairing

  • Pairing with multiple devices means the earbuds remember several devices.
  • Multipoint means they maintain active connections to two or more devices.
  • Automatic switching is usually an ecosystem-specific handoff and may not work across brands.
  • Three-device multipoint is a genuine differentiator of the Technics AZ100.

Some earbuds disable or limit multipoint when LDAC, aptX Lossless, or another high-bandwidth codec is enabled. Check the exact combination in the app rather than assuming every listed feature runs simultaneously.

Codecs and lossless audio

SBC and AAC are widely compatible. LDAC, aptX Adaptive, aptX Lossless, and Samsung's proprietary codecs require compatible source hardware, and a phone may not actually select the highest-quality option automatically. High-bandwidth codecs can reduce battery life, affect multipoint, or change connection stability.

The practical priority is usually fit first, recording quality second, EQ third, and codec fourth. A better seal or a quieter environment is often more noticeable than changing from one supported codec to another. Auracast is a Bluetooth LE Audio broadcast feature for receiving or sharing an audio stream; it only helps when both the transmitter and receiver support it. Battery claims

Record battery life in separate categories:

  1. Earbud life with ANC off.
  2. Earbud life with ANC on.
  3. Case capacity and total rated life.
  4. Quick-charge result.
  5. The effect of LDAC, aptX Lossless, spatial audio, Immersive Audio, and heart-rate sensing.
  6. Volume and test level, such as 50% volume or 75 dB SPL.

A 12-hour claim may mean ANC off, AAC, moderate volume, and no calls. ANC, high-resolution codecs, spatial audio, and microphones can reduce it to six or seven hours. Always distinguish a manufacturer claim from an independent measurement.

IP ratings are not waterproof labels

  • IPX4: splash and sweat resistance, not immersion.
  • IP54: adds dust protection to the earbud rating.
  • IP55: stronger water-jet resistance than IPX4, but not swimming protection.
  • IP57: dust protection plus temporary immersion resistance under laboratory conditions.

The earbuds and charging case may have different ratings. AirPods Pro 3 are rated IP57 for both, while Nothing Ear (a) has IP54 earbuds but an IPX2 case, and Pixel Buds Pro 2 has IP54 earbuds and an IPX4 case. Water resistance declines with wear, damage, repairs, and age. Dry the earbuds before placing them in the case, and never charge wet earbuds or a wet case.

Spatial audio

Spatial audio can make compatible films and television sound more enveloping, especially with head tracking. For music, the result is more subjective: some listeners enjoy the wider presentation while others prefer conventional stereo. Do not buy an earbud solely because it advertises spatial audio; check which phones, apps, and content support it.

Hearing and heart-rate features

AirPods Pro 3 hearing tests, hearing-aid functionality, hearing protection, Live Translation, and workout heart-rate sensing have specific hardware, software, language, and regional requirements. They are consumer features, not a replacement for professional medical advice or a clinical hearing evaluation. Similarly, Powerbeats Pro 2 heart-rate tracking should not be treated as medical-grade without an explicit medical-use claim.

How to get the best result from any wireless earbuds

  1. Try every eartip. Compare bass, comfort, and outside-noise reduction—not just whether the earbud stays in.
  2. Run the fit test. Use Apple's, Sony's, Bose's, Beats', or another manufacturer's test where provided.
  3. Update firmware and the companion app. ANC, multipoint, codec controls, and stability can change after updates.
  4. Get the seal right before using EQ. No equalizer can fully repair a loose or badly angled earbud.
  5. Test ANC in a real environment. A quiet bedroom tells you very little; try a train, street, café, or airplane when possible.
  6. Test microphones outdoors. A clear indoor call does not prove performance in wind, traffic, or a reverberant room.
  7. Dry earbuds before charging. Sweat resistance does not mean wet charging contacts are safe.
  8. Use the return window. Wear the earbuds for an extended session and with your normal glasses, hat, helmet, or workout gear.
  9. Keep listening levels reasonable. ANC can reduce the temptation to turn up the volume, but it does not make loud listening safe.

Testing claims, measurements, and what they can tell you

Independent reviewers do not measure exactly the same things in exactly the same way. RTINGS says it has tested more than 895 wireless earbuds and in-ear headphones, buys products from ordinary retailers, and uses repeatable lab tests for sound, isolation, microphones, active features, connectivity, battery, and multipoint limitations. Its frequency-response work uses a B&K 5128 head-and-torso simulator, while preference scores remain partly subjective.

SoundGuys combines frequency-response measurements, MDAQS sound-quality scoring, noise attenuation, microphone tests, and battery measurements with additional real-world use for connection reliability, controls, comfort, and app usability. TechRadar tests microphones with a standardized spoken passage and evaluates ANC in environments such as public transport, cafés, offices, city streets, and sometimes flights. NBC Select discloses when products were requested from brands, while RTINGS distinguishes products purchased from regular retailers. A supplied sample and a purchased unit are not the same testing arrangement.

That is why Sony can lead one ranking, AirPods Pro 3 another, and Technics AZ100 a third without one source necessarily being wrong. The rankings are weighting different outcomes. Fit, phone ecosystem, and intended use are more important than a tiny difference in a review score.

Common buying mistakes and recovery steps

The earbuds keep falling out

  1. Try all included tip sizes.
  2. Insert and rotate the earbuds as the manual shows.
  3. Clean the earbud and the entrance to the ear canal.
  4. Run the fit test.
  5. Switch to a wingtip or earhook design if conventional earbuds still move.
  6. Return the product if the shell itself causes pressure or cannot maintain a seal.

Battery life is much worse than advertised

Check whether ANC, spatial audio, Immersive Audio, LDAC, aptX Lossless, or heart-rate sensing is active. Confirm the test volume and whether the advertised figure refers to the earbuds or the entire case. Calls can consume more power than music. A lower real-world result does not automatically mean a faulty product if the manufacturer and independent reviewer used different conditions.

Calls sound good indoors but fail outside

Wind and traffic expose microphone limitations that a quiet-room test hides. Nothing Ear (a) and CMF Buds 2 deserve particular caution for outdoor calls based on the cited testing. For any model, look for recordings made in office, street, wind, and reverberant conditions rather than relying on the number of microphones.

Gaming feels delayed

Bluetooth version numbers do not guarantee low latency. Delay depends on the phone, codec, game, and any low-latency mode. Casual mobile gaming and video are usually acceptable, but competitive players should choose earbuds with an explicitly tested low-latency mode or a dedicated 2.4GHz wireless connection. RTINGS specifically tests latency and connectivity rather than treating a Bluetooth specification as sufficient.

ANC feels uncomfortable or ineffective

First check the seal and tip size. ANC depends on fit and can sound different with each ear. Try a different tip, reposition the earbud, and compare the normal, transparency, and ANC modes. If pressure or discomfort remains, a different shell shape—or an open-ear design—may be a better answer.

Safe listening

The World Health Organization recommends keeping volume below 60% of maximum, monitoring exposure, taking breaks, and using well-fitted noise-cancelling headphones in noisy places. WHO gives 80 dB for up to 40 hours per week as an example safe-listening reference and notes that allowable exposure falls as volume rises. ANC can help you avoid increasing volume to overpower background noise, but ANC and open-ear earbuds are not substitutes for certified hearing protection.

Bottom line

If you want one answer without considering anything else, buy the Sony WF-1000XM6 for most Android and mixed-device households. But the more useful answer is a short decision tree:

  • iPhone: AirPods Pro 3.
  • Samsung Galaxy: Galaxy Buds4 Pro.
  • Google Pixel: Pixel Buds Pro 2.
  • Other Android or mixed devices: Sony WF-1000XM6.
  • Strongest ANC: Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen).
  • Best sound and multipoint: Technics EAH-AZ100.
  • Under $100: EarFun Air Pro 4+ for features or Soundcore Liberty 4 NC for battery and ANC.
  • Workout security: Powerbeats Pro 2, or Powerbeats Fit for a smaller wingtip design.
  • Hear the world around you: Shokz OpenFit 2.

The final choice should be based on the phone you use, the shape of your ears, and the environment where you listen. Those factors usually matter more than small differences in codec support or sound-quality scores.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Sony WF-1000XM6 the best wireless earbuds for everyone?

No. They are the strongest broad recommendation for many Android and mixed-device buyers, but AirPods Pro 3 are a better fit for iPhone owners, Galaxy Buds4 Pro make more sense for Samsung users, Bose has the strongest ANC case, and Technics offers three-device multipoint and a sound-focused alternative.

Which wireless earbuds are best for an iPhone?

The Apple AirPods Pro 3 are the best default choice for most iPhone owners because of their pairing, switching, Find My, spatial-audio, and hearing-feature integration. Their full feature set is not available on Android, and they do not offer conventional Bluetooth multipoint.

What are the best wireless earbuds under $100?

Choose the EarFun Air Pro 4+ for the broadest feature set, the Soundcore Liberty 4 NC for battery life and budget ANC, or Nothing Ear (a) for inexpensive everyday listening and a polished app. CMF Buds 2 is the cheaper music-first choice around $50.

Are open-ear earbuds better than noise-cancelling earbuds?

Neither is universally better. Open-ear earbuds such as Shokz OpenFit 2 are better when awareness matters, while sealed in-ear earbuds are better for flights, loud commutes, bass, privacy, and ANC. Open-ear designs are not hearing protection.

Do expensive wireless earbuds have better battery life?

Not necessarily. Battery results depend on ANC, volume, codec, spatial audio, calls, and test conditions. Bose's premium QC Ultra Earbuds are rated for six hours with ANC off from Immersive Audio, while some less expensive models advertise longer runtimes. Compare the same test mode rather than headline numbers.

Can I use AirPods, Galaxy Buds, or Pixel Buds with another phone brand?

Usually for basic Bluetooth audio, yes, but compatibility is not the same as full functionality. Apple, Samsung, and Google reserve some switching, spatial-audio, codec, hearing, translation, and app features for their own devices or operating systems.

The Bottom Line

Best overall for most Android and mixed-device buyers: Sony WF-1000XM6. Best for iPhone: AirPods Pro 3. Best ANC: Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen). Best sound and multipoint: Technics EAH-AZ100. Best for Samsung Galaxy: Galaxy Buds4 Pro. Best budget choices: EarFun Air Pro 4+ or Soundcore Liberty 4 NC. Best workouts: Powerbeats Pro 2. Best open-ear option: Shokz OpenFit 2.
