The Galaxy Watch8 leak was broadly accurate: Samsung changed the shape of the outer case to a rounded-square design it calls a cushion design, while keeping the display and watch faces circular. In other words, the Watch8 looks less circular from the outside, but it is not a square-screen smartwatch like the Apple Watch.
Samsung officially launched the Galaxy Watch8 and Galaxy Watch8 Classic on July 9, 2025. The finished products confirmed the leak’s main visual idea, though not necessarily every leaked detail about buttons, materials, or configurations.

What the Galaxy Watch8 leak showed
Pre-launch images appeared to show a Galaxy Watch with a rounded-square or “squircle” housing instead of the fully circular case used by earlier mainstream Galaxy Watch models. The design also seemed to borrow visual cues from Samsung’s Galaxy Watch Ultra, including a squarer outer silhouette and a more prominent case structure.

Those details belonged to the leak and should not be treated as confirmed specifications unless they appear on Samsung’s final regional product listings. The important part of the leak—the case shape—was confirmed.

Contemporary reporting described the design as a square base surrounding a circular watch face. That remains the most useful way to understand it: the case outline changed, but the screen did not.
Android Central’s leak coverage documented the pre-launch imagery and its squircle interpretation.
Is the Galaxy Watch8 actually square?
No—not in the way most people mean when they say “square smartwatch.”
- Outer housing: rounded-square or cushion-shaped.
- Display: circular.
- Watch faces: built around the familiar round Galaxy Watch interface.
- Overall impression: less traditionally circular, especially around the case corners.
The 40mm Watch8 has a 438×438 circular display, while the 44mm model uses a 480×480 circular display. Samsung’s specifications therefore rule out the idea that it abandoned the round screen for a rectangular panel.
The most accurate summary is this: the Galaxy Watch8 is still round where it matters for the interface, but no longer fully round where you first notice the case.
Samsung calls the new exterior a cushion design, not an official “squircle” design. “Squircle” is useful shorthand for describing the shape, but it is not Samsung’s product name.

- Galaxy Watch8 Classic: a larger 46mm model with the same broader Watch8-era design direction and a physical rotating bezel.
- Galaxy Watch Ultra 2025: a larger, rugged model aimed at outdoor and endurance users.
Samsung introduced the Watch8 and Watch8 Classic at Galaxy Unpacked in Brooklyn on July 9, 2025. The company’s launch announcement confirms that the circular display remains part of the Watch8 design.
Why Samsung changed the case shape
Samsung’s explanation focuses less on making the watch look square and more on improving how the watch, its components, and its band work together. The cushion design is paired with a redesigned Dynamic Lug System, which Samsung says helps the watch sit more securely and comfortably on the wrist.
The standard Watch8 is 8.6mm thick. Samsung describes it as the thinnest Galaxy Watch design to date and says it is about 11% thinner than its predecessor. The company attributes the slimmer body to improved component integration and presents the new band structure as part of the wearability improvement.
That does not prove that every wearer will find the Watch8 more comfortable. Fit still depends on wrist circumference, case size, band material, band tension, and whether the watch is worn overnight. A thinner body may be especially appealing for sleep tracking, while the squarer corners or raised structure may matter to people who are sensitive to case edges.

It is reasonable to see the new case as a stronger visual link to the Galaxy Watch Ultra, but Samsung has not said that the squarer outline automatically creates more battery capacity or internal space. That would be an inference, not a confirmed benefit.

The visual redesign is more substantial than the processor change. The Watch8 keeps the same Exynos W1000 platform used by the Watch7, so buyers should not expect a major performance leap based on the chip alone.
The main upgrade arguments are the thinner case, new exterior, updated software, brighter display, larger batteries, and additional health and wellness features. Samsung’s corporate specifications list brightness of up to 3,000 nits for the Watch8 range.

Samsung’s listed measurements come from its global product information and corporate specifications. Regional listings can present measurements, configurations, and battery estimates differently.
Watch8 versus Watch8 Classic
The Classic is not simply the old circular Classic model with a new name. It uses the broader cushion-shaped design and is materially larger, thicker, and heavier than the standard Watch8.

The defining feature is the physical rotating bezel. Choose the Classic if tactile navigation and a larger premium-watch presence matter more than low weight and slimness. The standard Watch8 is the better fit for buyers who want a lighter everyday watch, a 40mm option, or a less noticeable device for sleeping.
What the redesign means in everyday use
Comfort and wrist fit
The 8.6mm standard Watch8 is thinner than the Watch7, and the Dynamic Lug System is intended to keep the watch and band aligned more naturally on the wrist. Samsung presents both changes as comfort improvements, but comfort is personal rather than guaranteed.

Smaller wrists should start by comparing the 40mm Watch8 with the 46mm Classic. The Classic’s 63.5g weight and 10.6mm thickness may be noticeable during sleep or exercise. Larger wrists may prefer the 44mm Watch8’s bigger display and 435mAh battery.

Because the screen remains circular, existing expectations about Galaxy Watch faces still apply. The new housing does not turn the Watch8 into a rectangular smartwatch, and buyers who prefer traditional analog-style watch faces do not have to adjust to a new screen format.
Software and health features
The redesign arrived with Wear OS 6 and One UI 8 Watch, along with Gemini integration and new or expanded health and wellness functions. Samsung highlights Bedtime Guidance, Running Coach, vascular-stress measurement during sleep, and an Antioxidant Index among the platform’s features.
These features should not be treated as universally available medical measurements. Support can depend on the country, compatible Samsung phone, Samsung Health version, Samsung account, software version, and applicable regulatory status. For example, Samsung’s US product page says Bedtime Guidance requires an Android 11-or-newer phone and Samsung Health version 6.30.2 or later. Check the requirements for your market before buying based on a specific health feature.

The Watch8 is a more compelling upgrade for someone who cares about physical design than for someone seeking a dramatic speed increase. The thinner case, cushion silhouette, Dynamic Lug System, brighter display, updated software, and newer health tools are the meaningful changes.
The case is weaker if your Watch7 is performing well and you mainly want a faster processor. Both generations use the Exynos W1000 platform. Existing Watch7 owners may be better served by waiting for a discount unless the slimmer body, new design, battery changes, or Watch8-only software features address a specific need.

Buyers who specifically want a completely circular outer case may also prefer an older Galaxy Watch design. The Watch8 preserves the round screen, but its corners are intentionally more visible.
How the Watch8 compares with the Ultra
The Watch8 borrows some of the Ultra’s design language, but it is not simply a smaller Ultra. The standard Watch8 is available in 40mm and 44mm sizes and is designed as Samsung’s mainstream, thinner model.
The Ultra platform is listed with a 47mm case, 12.1mm thickness, 60.5g weight, and 590mAh battery. It is the better choice for users prioritizing rugged construction, outdoor activities, and battery capacity. It is a poor fit for anyone seeking a discreet, compact watch or a smaller-wrist option.
Buying guidance
For US shoppers, Samsung’s June 2026 MSRP sheet lists the following prices, although promotions, trade-in credits, carrier offers, and regional availability can change:
- Watch8 40mm: $349.99 Bluetooth or $399.99 LTE.
- Watch8 44mm: $379.99 Bluetooth or $429.99 LTE.
- Watch8 Classic 46mm: $499.99 Bluetooth or $549.99 LTE.
- Galaxy Watch Ultra: $649.99 for listed LTE configurations.
Use Samsung’s Galaxy Watch8 product page, Watch8 Classic page, and Galaxy Watch Ultra page for current configurations and offers. LTE also requires a compatible carrier plan and may add recurring service costs.
- Choose the 40mm Watch8 for the lightest standard model and smaller wrists.
- Choose the 44mm Watch8 for a larger display and battery without moving to the Classic.
- Choose the Watch8 Classic for the physical rotating bezel and premium tactile controls.
- Choose the Ultra for rugged outdoor use and maximum battery capacity.
- Keep or discount-buy a Watch7 if processor performance is your only reason to upgrade.
Verdict
The Galaxy Watch8 leak got the central design change right, but “Samsung made a square smartwatch” is the wrong conclusion. Samsung changed the outer case to a cushion-shaped, rounded-square silhouette while retaining the circular display and familiar round watch interface.
The result is a less traditional-looking Galaxy Watch, not the end of Samsung’s round-screen design. For Watch7 owners, the redesign and thinner body are more important than raw processor performance; for buyers who want a physical rotating bezel, the larger and heavier Watch8 Classic is the relevant alternative.
