Developed with Wallpaper* Re-Made, it turns discarded electronics into the visible materials of a timepiece—and makes the waste behind modern technology impossible to ignore.
What is the Garbage Watch?
The Garbage Watch is a Vollebak concept created with Wallpaper* Re-Made. Time+Tide described it as a prototype assembled from parts taken from electronic devices, with components such as motherboard and microchip pieces left exposed rather than hidden beneath a conventional dial. Time+Tide’s coverage frames the design as intentionally brash: the object looks like what it is made from, rather than disguising its origins.
Vollebak’s July 2020 email said the components had previously been used in computers, smartphones and televisions. The founders, Nick and Steve Tidball, put the project’s premise this way: “What if electronic waste isn’t garbage? What if it’s simply pre-assembled raw materials that we can use to make new things.” The founders’ email presents that question as the reason for the design.
How is it designed?
The visible electronics are the central design feature. Time+Tide described a skeletonized, time-only dial with a small seconds register, while electrical cables form the strap. Rather than presenting recycled material as a subtle accent, the concept makes it the watch’s visual identity. The original description did not disclose the prototype’s size or movement details.

Was the Garbage Watch ever released?
The available sources establish a prototype and an announced plan to move from prototype toward a product. In July 2020, Vollebak said it would source components through e-waste recycling efforts, but that announcement is evidence of a plan at that time—not proof that a commercial watch followed. Vollebak’s email
The current indexed Vollebak collections page surfaced in the available material does not show a Garbage Watch listing. Vollebak collections An August 2026 community discussion says the watch never entered production, but that is a community report, not official confirmation. Community discussion Taken together, these sources do not establish a current retail product or a confirmed production release.

Can you buy it on Amazon or find a compatible part?
No exact purchasable Garbage Watch, compatible retail cable strap or replacement component, or title-specific book or manual is established by the available sources. A generic watch or e-waste product would not be a substitute for this particular project. There is therefore no substantiated Amazon listing to recommend.

The watch’s most useful idea is also its most literal: electronics contain materials and components that can be treated as inputs for new objects rather than as refuse. Vollebak presented the Garbage Watch as an experiment in making that possibility visible, with salvaged components serving as both the watch’s construction and its conversation starter. The project’s environmental rationale is a design proposition; the sources do not establish the watch’s eventual manufacturing, sourcing at commercial scale or environmental impact.
