Glashütte became a watchmaking center when Ferdinand Adolph Lange began producing pocket watches there on 7 December 1845, working with 15 apprentices. The town’s industry grew through training and specialist workshops, alongside other precision trades. Its later history includes political and industrial change, followed by a post-reunification revival described in distinct ways by today’s manufacturers. The German Watch Museum traces the local story from 1845 to the present.

Why did watchmaking begin in Glashütte?

In the 1840s, declining mining left families in the Ore Mountains with limited employment. The Saxon government sought specialists who could establish new industry in the region. Ferdinand Adolph Lange chose Glashütte and began making pocket watches with 15 apprentices on 7 December 1845, according to the town’s official history.

That date is commonly treated as the foundation of the town’s watchmaking identity. It marks a beginning, not the instant creation of a mature industry: the trade developed through the workers, training and specialist businesses that followed.

How did one workshop become a watchmaking industry?

Glashütte’s reputation depended on more than a single workshop. A specialist historical timeline highlights Lange’s apprentice training and the Glashütte Verlagssystem, a system of distributed specialist work. It also records workshops making or working on measuring tools, hands, escapement parts, jewels, balance wheels and finishing.

This division of labor helped create a local ecosystem: specialized skills and suppliers could support watch production beyond the output of any one maker. It is a more complete account of the town’s rise than a story centered only on the later fame of an individual brand.

Watchmaking was part of a broader precision-engineering identity. The municipality describes Glashütte as a town of watches and fine mechanics, and its history also includes precision enterprises such as calculating-machine and typewriter production. The town’s account is available at glashuette-sachs.de.

What happened to Glashütte watchmaking after 1945?

The available accounts establish that the town’s watch firms underwent major political and industrial change in the twentieth century, but they do not provide a sufficiently detailed, independent chronology of wartime damage, nationalization, state-era consolidation or the effects on individual firms. It would therefore be misleading to describe Glashütte’s history as uninterrupted private manufacture or to treat one company’s account as a complete town-wide history.

How was watchmaking revived after German reunification?

Company histories describe the post-reunification years from different institutional perspectives. A. Lange & Söhne says Walter Lange and Günter Blümlein founded Lange Uhren GmbH in Glashütte in 1990 to revive the company; this is the firm’s own account, set out in its company history.

Glashütte Original describes itself as the legal successor to the majority of the watch firms that existed in the town after the Second World War. That is the company’s stated succession claim, not another wording for the founding of Lange Uhren GmbH. Its account appears on the Glashütte Original history page.

What does Glashütte’s watchmaking identity mean today?

The municipality’s undated history page says that nine named manufacturers produce in Glashütte today. Because the page does not date or enumerate that figure in the cited material, it should be understood as the town’s own current-facing statement rather than a verified current census. The town also presents watchmaking alongside fine mechanics as part of its continuing industrial identity.

For visitors and anyone interested in the local story, the German Watch Museum Glashütte has a permanent chronological exhibition covering the industry from its beginnings in 1845 to the present. The museum’s building history says its foundation was established in 2006; the municipality says the reconstructed building opened as the museum in 2008. The building also houses Glashütte Original’s Alfred Helwig watchmaking school, linking historical interpretation with contemporary training. See the museum’s history of the building.
