Hublot unveiled the MECA-10 movement in January 2016. Its identity rests on a skeletonized, ring-and-bridge architecture inspired by Meccano-style construction, and a rack-based display for its manufacturer-stated 10-day power reserve. Hublot later fitted the 45 mm Big Bang MECA-10 with caliber HUB1201 and a 42 mm version with HUB1205; in 2020, the MECA-10 concept also formed the basis of a table clock made with L’Epée.
When did the Hublot MECA-10 come out?
Hublot dates the original Big Bang MECA-10’s release to 2016 and says the movement was unveiled in January of that year. The brand’s official 42 mm product page recalls the original release as 2016, while its 2020 announcement specifies January 2016 for the unveiling.
The MECA-10 arrived as a distinct movement design, not just a power-reserve figure: Hublot emphasized a visible, layered construction and a mechanical display intended to make the reserve legible. The following dates mark the developments documented by the brand:
- January 2016: Hublot says it unveiled the MECA-10 movement; the original Big Bang MECA-10 release is dated to 2016.
- Later 42 mm version: Hublot’s current 42 mm product page specifies caliber HUB1205. That page does not date the caliber’s introduction.
- 20 October 2020: Hublot announced a table clock made with L’Epée, built around the MECA-10 concept.
What makes the MECA-10 architecture distinctive?
Hublot describes the movement’s base as a ring to which the bridges attach, rather than the conventional plate arrangement it calls usual. The skeletonized construction leaves much of the mechanism visible from the dial side and the case back. The result, in Hublot’s description, is a layered, three-dimensional view of the components rather than a movement hidden beneath a conventional dial.

The name and visual language point to Meccano-style construction systems: linked pieces, visible structure and an impression of mechanical assembly. Hublot presents Meccano as design inspiration; that does not mean the watch contains Meccano parts. Its 42 mm page describes the ring-shaped base plate and attached bridges, while its 45 mm page also emphasizes the open construction.
How does the 10-day power-reserve display work?
Hublot specifies a 10-day power reserve for both the 45 mm HUB1201 and 42 mm HUB1205 Big Bang MECA-10 watches. The official MECA-10 user manual explains the HUB1201’s display: two parallel barrels supply energy, while a rack system indicates the remaining reserve. A crown gear at six o’clock is marked from 0 to 10 days. As the reserve changes, the rack-driven indication shows the corresponding day level.

Hublot characterizes this rack-based approach as rarely seen in mechanical watches. The stated 10 days are the manufacturer’s published specification, not an independently measured runtime or accuracy result.
HUB1201 vs. HUB1205: what is the difference?
The clearest documented distinction is the case size and caliber pairing. Hublot says the HUB1205 was reduced in dimension to fit the 42 mm case while retaining the MECA-10’s recognizable construction and performance. The cited pages do not provide a full engineering comparison, so they do not establish that the calibers have identical internal parts or that one is technically superior.

On 20 October 2020, Hublot announced an oversized table clock made with the Jura-based L’Epée manufacture. The brand described it as four times larger than the wristwatch version and said it retained a 10-day reserve. The release framed the clock as an adaptation of the MECA-10 idea, rather than as a new wristwatch caliber.

Hublot’s clock announcement lists a 134.6 mm diameter, 69.8 mm thickness, manual winding, 432 components, 52 jewels and a 2.5 Hz frequency. These specifications describe the clock release, not every wristwatch MECA-10. Hublot identified two limited editions: black PVD steel and polished steel. The clock’s user manual describes a hand-wound skeleton movement with a 10-day reserve.
What the official history does—and does not—establish
Hublot’s materials document the movement’s release, architecture, caliber pairings, stated reserve and clock adaptation. They do not provide independent test results for accuracy or reliability, or establish broad contemporary reception. Claims about performance beyond the manufacturer’s published specifications should therefore be treated as brand claims, not independent findings.
