The watch line took its name and bold visual character from that motorsport background; the brand’s role in Formula 1 itself has shifted over time, including two periods as the sport’s Official Timekeeper.
How TAG Heuer’s Formula 1 connection began
The watch collection and the brand’s involvement in racing are related, but they are not the same story. Heuer and TAG had motorsport links before the Formula 1 collection appeared. TAG Heuer dates the collection’s debut to 1986, after Techniques d’Avant-Garde (TAG) completed its acquisition of Heuer in January that year. The company’s retrospective presents the launch as a colorful, comparatively accessible quartz range—not as a racing chronograph or a dive watch. TAG Heuer’s vintage-history account describes the collection’s origins and early design.
Motorsport roots before the watch line
TAG Heuer’s January 2025 account traces Heuer’s Ferrari relationship to 1971–1979, TAG’s sponsorship of Williams to 1979–1981, and TAG’s investment in McLaren and funding of its Porsche turbo engine. The brand says the later TAG Heuer–McLaren partnership began in 1986. These dates and descriptions are TAG Heuer’s account of its own history. The brand’s January 2025 Formula 1 history sets out that chronology.
Why the collection was called Formula 1
The name drew on those existing racing associations. The original watches expressed that link through vivid colors and an unconventional case construction rather than through a uniform set of racing functions. They were designed as a distinct collection, not simply a series of professional timing instruments.

How the Formula 1 watches changed
The line has included different sizes, functions, materials and movement types. Its history is best read as a sequence of changes rather than as one specification carried across every watch.
| Period | Collection development |
|---|---|
| 1986 | The launch included 28 mm and 34 mm watches with bright fiberglass-reinforced plastic cases, plastic straps and quartz movements. TAG Heuer’s vintage-history page describes a stainless-steel inner case with a fiberglass coating. |
| 1989 | Chronographs joined the range. The Formula 1 name therefore did not mean every model was a chronograph; time-only watches were also part of the collection. |
| 1998–2000 | TAG Heuer’s retrospective places a new series in 1998 and the original collection’s discontinuation in 2000, following LVMH’s acquisition of TAG Heuer in 1999. |
| 2004 | The collection returned with a redesign and upgraded materials, including steel construction, sapphire crystal and larger cases. |
| 2012 | Automatic movement variants appeared in this generation, alongside the collection’s other configurations. |
| 2015 onward | A substantial case-style redesign marked the 2015 models. Later releases also included special collaborations. |
The periods in this table describe changes TAG Heuer records for the collection, not specifications shared by every model in each generation. For its early advertising, the brand’s magazine reproduces this late-1980s line: “The Heuer Formula 1. Guaranteed not to break down during high speed knocks and scrapes.” It is advertising copy, not an attributed quotation from a named person. TAG Heuer’s account of the collection’s early history discusses its evolution.

When was TAG Heuer Formula 1’s Official Timekeeper?
TAG Heuer says it served as Formula 1’s Official Timekeeper from 1992 to 2003, then returned to the role starting in January 2025. The second period is described in the company’s January 2025 article; that account does not establish detailed terms for the arrangement. The timekeeping role is distinct from team sponsorships and the Formula 1 watch collection itself.
In the same 2025 account, TAG Heuer lists its McLaren partnership as running from 1986 to 2015 and its Oracle Red Bull Racing partnership as starting in 2016 and continuing. Those team relationships form another strand of the brand’s racing history; they should not be confused with the years it held the sport-wide timekeeping role.

What the collection looks like today
In its January 2025 retrospective, TAG Heuer describes Formula 1 models spanning quartz and automatic movements, with materials including carbon and ceramic. One example it identifies is the Formula 1 Chronograph x Oracle Red Bull Racing, reference CAZ101AZ.FT8090, unveiled in December 2024. That release illustrates how the collection continues to use team collaborations, but the cited account does not establish its current availability or price. TAG Heuer’s Formula 1 collection page provides the brand’s collection context.

The story has two connected strands: a watch collection launched in 1986 with colorful quartz models, and a longer motorsport relationship built through partnerships, investment and official timekeeping. The collection’s later chronographs, redesigned generations and automatic variants reflect how the product changed; they do not make every Formula 1 watch a racing chronograph or give every model the same materials or movement.

The historical dates and figures cited here come from TAG Heuer-owned or TAG Heuer-published material, so they establish the brand’s account rather than independent verification of every detail. Its January 2025 magazine article also claims more than 230 Grand Prix wins, more than 500 podium finishes, 15 World Drivers’ Championship titles and 11 World Constructors’ Championship titles in describing the brand’s motorsport history.
