The British Mark IV.A and Mark V were First World War pocket watches adapted for use in aircraft cockpits—not wristwatches worn by pilots. Specialist histories date the Mark IV.A to 1914 and the Mark V to 1916, and describe long winding stems that let a watch be operated while mounted on an instrument panel or in a cockpit bracket. Their precise movement-duration patterns are less certain: published accounts differ, so a watch’s running time alone cannot reliably identify its model.
What were the Mark IV.A and Mark V?
They were British aviation pocket watches associated with First World War cockpit use. Instead of being strapped to a pilot’s wrist, a watch could be secured in a bracket or mounted on the instrument panel, where its dial was visible during flight. A long winding stem extended from the mounted watch, making it possible to wind it without removing it from its housing.
Max E. Reddick’s history describes the models as part of the shift from pocket watches toward wristlets in military aviation, and places their use in missions that included attacks on observation balloons. Time Worn Watches also describes cockpit-bracket mounting and oversized crowns. These are accounts in specialist secondary sources, not a complete set of official procurement specifications.
When were they used?
Reddick’s article dates the Mark IV.A to 1914 and the Mark V to 1916. These dates give a useful sequence—Mark IV.A first, Mark V later—but the sources available here do not confirm them against procurement records or archival catalogs.

How did cockpit use shape the watches?
Mounting and winding
The bracket or panel mounting made the watch function more like a cockpit instrument than a personal timepiece. Its extended winding stem and oversized crown supported winding while the watch remained mounted; the larger crown was also suited to operation with flying gloves.
Legibility and lighting
The specialist accounts describe clear dials intended to be read in flight, as well as both luminous and non-luminous versions. Luminous dials were associated with night flying. The sources do not establish that every example of either model had a luminous dial.

Movement duration: why accounts differ
The published descriptions do not agree on a simple model-by-model rule. Monochrome says Royal Flying Corps watches were commonly 30-hour and Royal Naval Air Service watches predominantly eight-day. Time Worn Watches describes Mark IV.A examples it has seen as generally eight-day and Mark V watches as generally 30-hour, while noting exceptions and uncertainty. Monochrome also describes an eight-day Mark V as suited to longer flights, which does not align neatly with the other account’s typical-duration description.
Without a primary specification or a securely documented example, neither pattern should be treated as definitive. In particular, movement duration by itself is not a dependable way to distinguish a Mark IV.A from a Mark V.

What distinguishes the models—and what does not?

The dates and model descriptions in this comparison come from specialist secondary accounts, not a verified official specification set. A reliable identification should weigh several features together and consider the evidence for the individual watch.
How can you identify an RFC Mark V or Mark IV.A?
Maker names, dial codes, and government or aviation marks can help narrow an identification, but none should be treated as conclusive proof by itself. The complete watch—including its dial, movement, case, and provenance—matters.

Makers and dial codes
Monochrome identifies Zenith, Omega, Doxa, and Electa as known Mark V makers, and says Mark IV.A watches came from multiple makers, including Smiths. Time Worn Watches names Smith & Sons and H. Williamson Ltd. among common Mark IV.A makers, and describes Mark V dial letter codes for a broader group of manufacturers. It also notes that a movement may carry a maker’s name even when the dial displays a code.
These are maker references from specialist sources, not a verified or exhaustive procurement list. A dial code and a movement signature may offer complementary clues, but the sources do not establish a complete official code key.

Government and aviation marks
Both accounts discuss British government ownership marks, including the broad arrow—also called a pheon or crow’s foot—and aviation-related markings. Such details can support an identification, but a mark alone does not prove authenticity, a particular model, or a specific service history. That requires examination of the whole watch and corroborating documentation.
What the evidence does not establish
- Dependable production totals or survival rates for the Mark IV.A and Mark V.
- A complete primary-source list of makers or a definitive specification that resolves the reported movement-duration differences.
- That a particular watch served with a specific unit or on a specific mission solely because it carries a government or aviation mark.
Time Worn Watches speculates that production may have reached the low tens of thousands by reasoning from pilot numbers. That is an inference, not a verified production figure, and should not be used as a confirmed total.

Reddick reproduces this Smiths promotional sentence: “Because of its splendid time keeping and unfailing accuracy this instrument has gained the reputation of being the most successful watch yet designed for constant use on Aircraft”. The contemporary advertisement or archival record behind the quotation has not been independently established here, so it is best understood as a quotation reported in Reddick’s article, not as a separately verified historical document.
