Independent watchmaking is a varied field, not a single production model or quality stamp. It includes small ateliers making highly complicated watches and microbrands with more accessible designs, united less by one definition than by a stronger sense of maker-led identity. To understand the movement—and choose a watch wisely—look beyond the label to the people, design, movement, service plan and production realities behind each brand.
What counts as an independent watch brand?
There is no universal test for “independent.” In broad specialist coverage, the term can mean watch companies unaffiliated with large luxury groups, including both high-end makers and microbrands. A narrower approach considers ownership, production scale and whether a brand creates original work rather than relying mainly on homage designs. Some curated lists also make exceptions for autonomous ateliers within larger groups or for bigger brands with substantial in-house engineering. Their classifications can change as ownership and scale change.
Those definitions describe different editorial choices, not a single official boundary. Fratello uses the broad sense; IndependentWatchmaking.com publishes its own curation methodology. “Independent,” “microbrand,” “independently owned,” “small batch” and “in-house movement” are not interchangeable. A small brand may use supplier-made components, and independence alone says nothing definitive about workmanship or quality.
For this article, independent watchmaking means the broad, maker-led field, while recognizing that individual brands may fit some definitions better than others. The word is a useful starting point—not a substitute for checking how a particular company is owned and how its watches are made.

How the modern movement took shape
The modern wave of independent watchmaking took shape in the 1980s and 1990s, according to auction-house histories from Phillips and Sotheby’s. These accounts offer useful milestones, not a complete chronology of the field.
- 1985: Phillips dates Svend Andersen’s co-founding of the Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants (AHCI) to 1985. The organization helped promote independent watchmakers.
- 1992: Sotheby’s dates Philippe Dufour’s first watch under his own name to this year.
- 1996: Phillips highlights Dufour’s Duality, an early wristwatch with two escapements.
- 1999: Sotheby’s dates the founding of F.P. Journe’s manufacturer to this year and discusses Journe’s early Tourbillon Souverain.
Examples in Sotheby’s 2024 overview include Philippe Dufour, F.P. Journe, Greubel Forsey, Kari Voutilainen, H. Moser & Cie., Laurent Ferrier and Vianney Halter. They represent different approaches and scales; the list is neither a ranking nor a permanently settled roster.

What makes indie watches distinctive?
The appeal often lies in visible authorship: a particular dial, display, case, movement layout or finishing choice can make a watch feel like a specific maker’s point of view rather than one item in a broad corporate portfolio. That may mean restrained traditionalism, unusual materials or a deliberately unconventional mechanism. It does not mean every small company is original or that every watch is well executed.
MB&F offers a clear example of concept-led work. The company says it was founded in 2005 as Maximilian Büsser & Friends and makes small-series concept watches with horological professionals. MB&F describes its aim as deconstructing conventional watchmaking into three-dimensional kinetic art. It also calls itself “the world’s first-ever horological concept laboratory”—a company claim, rather than an independently established industry designation.

In 2025, MB&F marked its twentieth anniversary and reported that it had created more than 20 calibres. Those figures describe MB&F alone; they are not a count or measure of the wider independent-watch sector. Fratello’s 2024 commentary observes that microbrands range from entry-level watches to higher-end work and that the gap between microbrands and traditional independent watchmakers is narrowing. That is an editorial assessment, not evidence that all such brands share the same capabilities.

Judge the specific watch and the company behind it, rather than treating independence as a proxy for quality. These checks help distinguish a compelling design from a purchase you can confidently own and maintain.

Design and identity
Ask what makes the watch recognizably itself. Is the appeal a clear design language, an unusual display, traditional proportions or a distinctive material? A small company can offer a strong point of view, but small production alone does not prove originality.
Movement and execution
Find out which calibre is used, what complications it provides and what work the brand performs itself. Ask which components or operations come from suppliers; “independent” does not mean every part is made under one roof. Specifications can identify materials and functions, but Fratello cautions that online information alone may not make finishing easy to assess. Examine the watch in person if possible, or seek detailed, reliable views of the surfaces and construction before committing.

Availability and production
Confirm whether the exact model is currently offered, how orders are handled and what the expected wait is. Some prominent makers have long waits or may stop taking orders. Limited output is a production fact, not proof of superior quality or future collectability.
Service and parts
Before purchase, ask who can service the watch, where service is performed and whether parts are expected to remain available. This matters especially for very small or online-only operations. Fratello raises the general risk that parts and service could become harder to secure if a small company closes; that is a reason to ask the brand and seller direct questions, not evidence that any particular maker lacks support.
Budget and resale expectations
Prices and resale liquidity vary widely across independent makers and models. Decide what the watch is worth to you as an object to wear, and do not treat auction results or collector interest as a promise of appreciation. Bezel Journal’s 2026 commentary frames authorship as part of the appeal while noting that recognition and liquidity still vary; this is market commentary, not measured resale data.
