The IWC Ocean BUND was a military-service watch developed for the Bundeswehr, including German Navy combat swimmers known as Kampfschwimmer. It was not simply the civilian Ocean 2000 with a military name: the BUND family included several references and unit-specific variants, and the military model documented by Phillips was tested to 300 metres—not the civilian model’s 2,000 metres.
What is the IWC Ocean BUND?
“BUND” refers to the Bundeswehr, Germany’s federal armed forces. In the late 1970s, the Bundeswehr commissioned IWC to develop a durable service watch. Developed with Porsche Design and based on the Ocean line, the military Ocean BUND was intended for demanding military work, including diving and mine-clearance duties. Phillips reports that the first reference 3501 was delivered in 1984.
The name covers a family rather than one uniform configuration. The cited references are 3314, 3319, 3501, 3509, 3519 and 3529. Their movements, intended roles and details differed, so an identification or comparison should start with the reference number rather than the Ocean name alone.
Was the Ocean BUND issued to German combat swimmers?
Yes. IWC historian David Seyffer, in an interview reported by Fratello Watches, associated references 3501 and 3509 with German Navy combat swimmers, or Kampfschwimmer. His account also identifies later automatic reference 3529, quartz references 3314 and 3319, and reference 3519 AMAG, a mine-diver variant. Phillips likewise describes the family’s military roles and says a batch of 50 reference 3519 watches was designated for mine divers and delivered in 1988.
#1 Best Overall
- Stainless Steel case with Black Resin Band
- Black Dial with date window at 3 O'clock
- Luminous markers and hour hands; sweep second hand
- Anti-reverse bezel
- Water-resistant to 200 M (660 feet)
Assignments were specific to variants and units; “issued to frogmen” is accurate for some Ocean BUND references, not a complete description of every watch in the family. Phillips identifies the 3519 batch and its delivery date, while Seyffer’s account supplies the reference-to-role associations above.
How does the military Ocean BUND differ from the civilian Ocean 2000?
The military and civilian watches are related, but their specifications should not be conflated. Phillips describes the military watches as tested to 300 metres and the civilian Ocean 2000 as rated to 2,000 metres. The BUND’s military markings and its reference-specific configuration are also central to identifying it as a service watch.

What are the Ocean BUND references and their roles?
The sources identify six military references. The overview below keeps movement and role claims tied to the accounts that report them; the available descriptions do not establish every technical detail for every example.

What does “3H” mean on an Ocean BUND dial?
The “3H” marking identifies a tritium-lume dial variant. The cited sources also document Ocean BUND dials with Super-LumiNova. Lume type is one detail to compare when assessing a particular watch, but a dial marking by itself does not establish authenticity or prove that the rest of the watch is original.
How can you identify an IWC Ocean BUND 3509?
Phillips’ catalogue for a reference 3509 example documents an automatic calibre 3752, a titanium case measuring 42.5 mm across, a flat crystal, black bezel, orange seconds hand, and BUND caseback designation with a stock number. It also describes a nylon strap and an optional titanium bracelet. WatchTime summarizes the military watch with a 42 mm case, flat crystal, 300-metre pressure resistance, BUND and supply number, and a red-edged minute hand. These descriptions do not prove that every 3509—or every military reference—has all the same dimensions and details.

For a listing or purchase, check the parts of the watch against the claimed reference and configuration:
- Reference and movement: Confirm the reference and whether the watch is presented as automatic or quartz; compare those claims with the documented family variants.
- Dial and lume: Note whether the dial is marked 3H for tritium or uses Super-LumiNova, and assess whether the dial fits the claimed example.
- Caseback: Look for the documented BUND designation and stock number. One marking alone is not proof of authenticity.
- Condition and originality: Consider whether the dial, hands, bezel, case and movement appear consistent with the reference and each other.
- Accessories and paperwork: Compare the strap or bracelet, tools and documents with what the seller claims. Phillips catalogue examples include IWC archival or authenticity documentation, but the cited sources do not provide a complete authentication protocol.
- Inspection: For a purchase decision, have the watch assessed by a qualified vintage-watch specialist. The available markings and descriptions are useful checks, not a substitute for an inspection.
How many IWC Ocean BUND watches were made?
A definitive production total is not established by the cited sources. Seyffer estimated that approximately 150 automatic and 200 quartz military watches were delivered; those figures are estimates, not confirmed totals. Phillips separately reports a batch of 50 reference 3519 AMAG watches designated for mine divers. That batch figure describes the 3519 group, not the production total for the entire Ocean BUND family.

What does a historical auction result tell you about value?
Phillips records a 1986 reference 3509 example sold for CHF 20,160. That is a historical result for one catalogue watch, not a current valuation or a reliable price estimate for another Ocean BUND. Condition, originality, reference, configuration, documentation and the specifics of a later sale all matter; current availability and asking prices are listing-specific.
