But calling it a Gérald Genta design goes further than the available evidence allows. IWC documents Genta’s 1976 redesign of the Ingenieur SL, not the Yacht Club II; the Yacht Club II attribution remains disputed and unverified.
Was the IWC Yacht Club II designed by Gérald Genta?
It is not established. IWC’s official history says Gérald Genta gave the Ingenieur a new look in 1976, identifying the Ingenieur SL, Ref. 1832. The chronology does not credit him with the Yacht Club II. That documented Ingenieur work helps explain why collectors compare the Yacht Club II with Genta-associated designs, but resemblance or a shared period is not proof of authorship. IWC’s history provides the confirmed context.
A 2009 post on the IWC Collectors Forum reports that a response passed through Genta’s personal assistant from Madame Genta said he designed neither the Yacht Club II nor the Polo Club. The forum author described asking the question in different ways and sending photographs, but the answer reached readers through intermediaries. It is therefore meaningful secondhand testimony, not a direct statement from Genta or an archival record. A separate collectors’ discussion likewise characterizes the attribution as lacking solid proof. The 2009 forum post and the later attribution discussion document the debate, but do not settle it.
The fairest description is that Genta’s authorship of the Yacht Club II is unverified and contested. Without a period catalog or IWC archive record naming its designer, it should not be presented as a confirmed Genta creation.

The Yacht Club Automatic and Yacht Club II are different generations
IWC dates the unveiling of the original Yacht Club Automatic to the Basel Watch Show in 1967. That date belongs to the original model, not the later Yacht Club II. Keeping the generations distinct matters: the original’s date does not establish when the Yacht Club II was designed or who designed it. IWC’s chronology identifies the 1967 unveiling.
What is known about Yacht Club II references and specifications?
A secondary reference sheet identifies Ref. 3212 as a Yacht Club II and gives 1979 as its first-purchase date. It describes Ref. 3211 as the same model on a leather strap. These are useful identifiers, but the sheet is not a primary IWC archive source, so its details should be treated as provisional rather than definitive for every example. The IWC Galerie / Gerhard Standop reference sheet is the source for the figures below.

| Ref. 3212 detail | What the secondary sheet says |
|---|---|
| Case diameter | 38 mm |
| Caliber | A 3254 or A 3258; the sheet lists alternatives |
| Movement frequency | 28,800 half-beats per hour, according to the 2008 sheet |
| Jewels | 34, according to the 2008 sheet |
| Movement diameter | 26 mm, according to the 2008 sheet |
| Movement height | 3.25 mm, according to the 2008 sheet |
| Ref. 3211 distinction | Same model on a leather strap, according to the sheet |
The listed movement alternatives are a reason to verify an individual watch’s reference and movement rather than assume that every Yacht Club II uses the same caliber. The 38 mm figure is a useful historical point of comparison, but case diameter alone cannot tell you how a redesigned watch would wear; proportions, thickness, lug or bracelet geometry, and fit also matter.
Why a modern Yacht Club II revival makes sense
The most persuasive reason to revive the Yacht Club II is its own design identity, not a borrowed Genta credit. Its bracelet version offers an integrated sports-watch character that could be carried forward while acknowledging that the authorship remains uncertain. A revival could preserve what is demonstrably associated with the model and avoid presenting visual similarities as proof of who drew it.

Any modern interpretation would have meaningful choices to make:
- Case and bracelet: Keep the integrated sports-watch character central, while recognizing that Ref. 3212 is identified as the bracelet version and Ref. 3211 as the leather-strap version in the secondary sheet.
- Scale: Treat the reported 38 mm Ref. 3212 diameter as a historical reference point, not an automatic instruction for a new case size.
- Historical fidelity: Separate features tied to the Yacht Club II from details observers merely consider “Genta-like.”
- Movement: Distinguish the sheet’s uncertain A 3254 or A 3258 listing from any movement chosen for a new watch. A modern caliber would be a design decision, not a confirmed continuation of the historical specification.
No current Yacht Club II revival option is established here, so the case is for a design possibility rather than a comparison with an available reissue.

What evidence would settle the remaining questions?
A period catalog or IWC archive record could clarify the designer, establish the production run, and confirm specifications reference by reference. Until such primary documentation is available, Genta’s authorship should remain an open question, and the Ref. 3212 measurements should be attributed to the secondary reference sheet rather than generalized to all Yacht Club II watches.
For anyone considering a vintage example, verify the reference, originality, service history, and condition with reliable documentation or a qualified specialist. The available material identifies the model and useful reference leads; it does not establish current listings, seller authenticity, or the condition of any particular watch.
