MAD Paris turns recognizable luxury-watch platforms into conspicuous statements of personal taste. A 2020 Time+Tide feature by Fergus Nash showed the range through five modified Rolex and Audemars Piguet watches: from pink accents on a blackened Daytona to floral engraving, stripped-back dials and an irreverent Milgauss. The transformations can be arresting, but they also raise practical questions about legibility, technical properties and warranty.
What MAD Paris changes—and what it leaves recognizable
The five watches in Nash’s feature retain familiar foundations: two Rolex Daytonas, two Audemars Piguet Royal Oaks and one Rolex Milgauss. Their cases, dials, hands, engraving and finishes are changed to varying degrees, so the results range from accent-driven customization to work that reimagines much of the watch’s visual identity.
The feature is a design-led presentation, not a buying guide or a report of standardized hands-on testing. Its descriptions and judgments are Nash’s editorial observations. The central idea is that a watch need not conform to a conventional ideal if its owner finds the result compelling. As Nash puts it, “the true perfect watch is whatever the client thinks looks cool.”
Five MAD Paris transformations
Black and pink Rolex Daytona
A matte carbon-black coating and textured dial set off hot-pink details and pink sapphires. The darkened indices lose the expected luminous quality, while the mostly stock sub-dials preserve some of the Daytona’s familiar character. The contrast makes the watch immediately distinctive, but the visual change comes with a practical trade-off: the dial’s darkness does not provide the same legibility cue as luminous markers.

Engraved 33 mm Audemars Piguet Royal Oak
Symmetrical floral engraving runs across the steel case and integrated bracelet. Rather than emphasizing the Royal Oak’s traditionally forceful geometry, the decoration introduces a softer, ornamental counterpoint. The transformation is concentrated in the surface treatment: the watch remains recognizable, but its metalwork becomes the focus.
Gunmetal-black 39 mm Royal Oak
This Royal Oak pairs a textured gunmetal-black dial with orange details, evoking an instrument or pilot’s gauge. Most indices and dial information are removed; selected markings, chronograph sub-dials, the date window and a “MAD CUSTOM” badge remain. The result trades quick access to information for a stripped-back, technical-looking composition.

Skeletonized and engraved Rolex Daytona
Here the dial is opened up and decorated with floral engraving. The tachymeter and sub-dial rings remain largely intact, while the rotor receives a leafy detail. Nash describes the effect as sculptural, and notes the cost: reducing the dial’s conventional visual cues makes the watch less legible.
Colette collaboration Rolex Milgauss
The 2016 collaboration with Paris boutique Colette combines a bead-blasted case and bracelet with a blue lightning-bolt seconds hand and deliberately irreverent dial lettering. The changes make the Milgauss provocative rather than discreet; this is customization intended to be noticed, not an attempt to preserve an understated factory appearance.

What the examples show about the design approach
Across the five watches, MAD Paris’s interventions are not one uniform treatment. Some emphasize color and finish while retaining much of the original dial layout; others remove information, add engraving or turn the dial into a more sculptural surface. The common thread is the tension between recognition and reinvention: the underlying watch remains identifiable, but its conventional visual priorities may not.
That tension is also why these pieces will divide opinion. A buyer who values the original dial’s readability, factory finish or restrained design may see the changes as losses. Someone drawn to distinctive, personal objects may regard those same departures as the point. In Vogue’s reporting on earlier collaborations, Browns buying director Ida Petersson described the appeal of one-off and limited-run pieces, while designers discussed adding their own handwriting to an iconic watch. Those comments explain the attraction, but do not establish that any particular piece is available now.

What to check before buying a modified watch
A modified luxury watch should be assessed as a specific altered pre-owned item, not assumed to have the condition, specification or protections of an untouched example of its original model. The five-watch feature does not provide an independent inspection protocol, so buyers need to confirm the details for the exact watch they are considering.
- Condition and provenance: Ask for the watch’s documented history and a clear account of its present physical condition.
- Scope of modification: Confirm which parts were changed, coated, engraved, removed or replaced. Ask whether any technical characteristics, including water resistance, have been affected; the feature flags this as a potential cost of modification, but does not report test results for the five examples.
- Warranty: MAD Paris currently says its displayed watches are second-hand and personalized by independent craftsmen, and that original manufacturer warranties are no longer valid unless a listing specifically says otherwise. Its warranty applies instead. Read the applicable terms for the individual watch.
- Photographs: MAD says some online watch images may be computer generated. Verify whether the listing’s images show the actual watch, and request current photographs if that is unclear.
- Availability: Check the exact listing rather than inferring that a watch can be ordered from an archive entry or an older article.
These points matter because a modified watch may look like a familiar Rolex or Audemars Piguet while no longer carrying the original manufacturer’s warranty or factory configuration. Vogue’s historical reporting likewise noted that the original Audemars Piguet guarantee did not apply to customized watches retailed through Browns; its retail and price details describe that period, not current offers.

MAD Paris’s archive illustrates the range of its collaborative work, but archive listings should not be read as live inventory. The brand lists its Royal Order collaboration with seconde/seconde as a made-to-order, 10-piece Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 15400ST with a 41 mm case and automatic movement, and marks it sold out. Its archive also lists the Jacob & Co. The World Is Yours Dual Time Zone collaboration as a 101-piece edition. These are facts about those named projects, not typical production volumes for MAD Paris watches or evidence that either edition is currently for sale.
