The Tudor Black Bay Pro Polar and black-dial models share the same core watch: a 39 mm steel case, COSC-certified MT5652 GMT movement, fixed 24-hour bezel, approximately 70-hour power reserve and 200 m water resistance. The choice is mainly between the opaline light dial (reference M79470-0004) and the black dial (M79470-0001)—not between different GMT capabilities or specifications.
Black Bay Pro Polar vs. black: the key differences
“Polar” is the buyer-facing nickname for the opaline-dial Black Bay Pro; TUDOR’s official product description calls the dial opaline. The black and opaline versions have different references, but their listed core specifications match.

What the opaline dial changes—and what it doesn’t
The most visible difference is the face. TUDOR describes the opaline version’s hands and ceramic markers as outlined in black to create bold contrast. That is the manufacturer’s design rationale, not a controlled comparison showing that the Polar is easier to read in every light or for every wearer. The available product specifications do not establish a measured legibility or low-light winner.

Choose the black model if you prefer a dark dial; choose the opaline model if you want a light face and like its outlined markers. If legibility is decisive, compare both in person or in photographs that reflect the lighting in which you expect to wear the watch. There is no sourced evidence here that either dial is more durable, more sought-after or more valuable on resale.
How the GMT works on both models
The dial color does not change the GMT layout. The angular yellow 24-hour Snowflake hand tracks reference time, completing one rotation in 24 hours. Read that hand against the fixed 24-hour bezel to display a second time zone. The shorter local-time Snowflake hour hand reads on the 12-hour scale.
The local hour hand jumps backward or forward for adjustment. TUDOR says the date is coupled to that hand and changes instantaneously when it crosses midnight, including when the hand is moved backward. These functions are part of the shared MT5652 movement.
Shared specifications and practical meaning
Both versions are listed with a 39 mm steel case measuring 14.6 mm thick, a 20 mm lug width and a fixed, graduated 24-hour steel bezel. TUDOR specifies 200 m (660 ft) water resistance; that rating alone does not establish suitability for a particular dive or activity.

- 41mm steel case with polished and satin finish
- Bidirectional rotatable bezel in steel with 24-hour graduated anodised aluminium disc
- Self-winding mechanical movement with 70 hour power reserve
The MT5652 is a self-winding, COSC-certified movement with a built-in GMT function and an approximately 70-hour power reserve. TUDOR’s 2025 press kit lists its frequency as 28,800 beats per hour (4 Hz), with 28 jewels, a 31.8 mm diameter and 7.52 mm thickness. Those movement figures are shared architecture, not a difference between the dial options. See TUDOR’s 2025 Black Bay Pro press kit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose between M79470-0004 and M79470-0001
- Decide on the dial. Pick the dark black face or light opaline face based on your preference; “Polar” refers to the opaline version.
- Compare the exact configuration. Check whether each listing is on a bracelet or strap rather than comparing unlike versions.
- Check current local pricing. TUDOR’s displayed US figures can change and do not apply universally across regions or configurations.
- Try the dial in representative conditions. TUDOR’s contrast description is not proof of universal readability superiority, so view the watches under lighting relevant to your use.
