The Polerouter Book is an illustrated, English-language hardback by Andrew Willis and Mattia Mazzucchi that brings together the history, visual variety and reference details of Universal Genève’s Polerouter. Its strongest appeal is to collectors who want archival context and photographs of many variations in one substantial volume; it is less suited to anyone seeking a watch-maintenance manual or a compact, inexpensive introduction.

What does The Polerouter Book cover?

The book begins with the Polerouter’s association with Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) and its inaugural trans-polar commercial flights in 1954, then moves through individual models and reference material. The product description says the project drew on years of collecting and four focused years of research, with support from Universal Genève and access to the brand’s archives. The product page describes its contents.

That historical frame matters because the Polerouter was not a single unchanging watch. Universal Genève says Gérald Genta designed it in 1954, initially under the name Polarouter; the name changed to Polerouter in 1957. The brand describes the original as intended for SAS pilots and early commercial flights over the North Pole, with attention to resistance to shock, water, dust and magnetism. Universal Genève’s history of the model provides that account. The book profile dates the first transpolar commercial flight from Copenhagen to Los Angeles to November 15, 1954. The brand’s profile of the book gives that date.

According to the product description, the book incorporates technical drawings, catalogues, brochures, advertising and original production records, alongside updated information on serial numbers, references and logos. That mix makes it potentially useful both as a visual history and as a research aid when identifying variations. It is historical and reference-oriented material, however; the described contents do not establish that it includes servicing instructions or hands-on watch tests.

How useful is it for collectors?

The Polerouter family spans early Polarouter examples, bumper-movement variants, later movement and case changes, the more affordable Polerouter Genève line, and the Polerouter Sub family. Phillips’ collecting guide outlines that range. A collector reference site also describes a broad change in reference-number coding around 1965. Its reference overview illustrates why comparing details across models can be challenging.

Against that complexity, the book’s model-by-model chapters and updated serial, reference and logo information are meaningful strengths on paper. The product page says Willis and Mazzucchi selected 120 examples with collectors internationally and photographed each to show its distinctive characteristics. Universal Genève’s book profile also reports that the authors photographed 120 watches and received contributions from collectors in several cities and countries. The profile describes the project and its contributors. That breadth of imagery should help readers see how design and execution vary, rather than treating every Polerouter as interchangeable.

The available descriptions make a strong case for breadth, photography and archival depth, but they do not establish how the book compares page by page with other Polerouter references. It is therefore best regarded as a substantial specialist resource, not proven to be the definitive or superior reference in its field.

What is the book like as an object?

The product page lists 396 pages and dimensions of 305 × 280 × 40 mm. Those specifications point to a large-format volume designed to give its watch photography and source material room; they also mean it will take up more shelf and table space than an ordinary book. Universal Genève describes a fabric cover whose three interlocking circular lines refer to the Polerouter’s inner bezel. The brand’s book profile discusses the design.

The scale and physical presentation suit a reader who wants to spend time with photographs, documents and reference material. They are less practical if you want a small book to carry around or a quick field guide. That is a format trade-off, not a measure of the research quality.

Who should buy it?

  • Polerouter collectors: A useful fit if you want one illustrated volume covering multiple models, references and historical material.
  • Watch-history readers: The SAS and trans-polar-flight origins give the model a clear historical thread, supported by archival and period material described by the publisher.
  • Casual enthusiasts: The photography and narrative may appeal, but the large specialist format is most compelling if you expect to return to the book as a reference.
  • Readers seeking practical watch care: The described contents do not indicate a repair, maintenance or buying-advice manual.
