The Rado Captain Cook: The 1962 Diver That Returned in 2017

Introduced in 1962 and revived in 2017, the Rado Captain Cook pairs a distinctive rotating-anchor history with a modern line spanning multiple sizes and materials.

Rado introduced the Captain Cook as a diving watch in 1962 and revived the design in 2017. Its most unusual historical detail was the small rotating anchor beneath 12 o’clock: Rado says it sat on a lubricated ruby bearing and could signal that the movement needed service if it stopped turning freely. The name now covers a varied modern collection, so details such as size, materials and water resistance depend on the specific model.

When did Rado launch the Captain Cook?

Rado dates the Captain Cook’s debut to 1962, when it presented the watch as a diver. The company’s account of the original design centers on the rotating anchor below 12 o’clock. Rado says the anchor was mounted on a lubricated ruby bearing and that, if it stopped rotating freely, the wearer could take that as an indication that the movement needed service. That explanation comes from Rado’s own historical account, rather than an independently documented service standard. Rado’s Captain Cook history also reproduces the original campaign line: “doctors, engineers, athletes, deep sea divers, racing car drivers… this is the watch for you.”

How did the Captain Cook design change?

The Captain Cook name spans more than one case size and construction. These milestones help distinguish the original-inspired revival from later additions and the separate MKII design.

Year Version What Rado documents
1962 Original Captain Cook Introduced as a diving watch, with the pivoting anchor detail below 12 o’clock. Rado history
2017 Modern revival Rado says the relaunch followed the original’s 37 mm format. The company’s materials vary in how they name this release, so the most useful distinction is its date and size rather than a definitive period name. Rado history; Rado US collection
2019 42 mm Captain Cook Rado’s history gives this steel-era model a 30 bar (300 m) water-resistance rating. That figure belongs to the cited version, not every Captain Cook. Rado history
2019 Captain Cook MKII A distinct design with an inner turning bezel for measuring up to 80 minutes of elapsed dive time and a stated 22 bar (220 m) water resistance. Rado MKII release
2021 43 mm High-Tech Ceramic The press kit describes a ceramic monobloc case, a visible movement beneath a tinted sapphire dial and case back, and an 80-hour power reserve for the movement covered in that release. Rado 2021 press kit

When was the Captain Cook reissued?

Rado dates the modern revival to 2017 and says it kept the original’s 37 mm format. The company’s CEO, Adrian Bosshard, described the revival in Rado’s 2021 High-Tech Ceramic press kit: “The journey started in 1962 with the launch of the original Captain Cook 37 mm. In 2017, the iconic look was re-launched and hit the nerve of time with the renewed worldwide interest in vintage-style diving watches.” The same press kit documents the later 43 mm ceramic expansion, not specifications for every current Captain Cook.

What does “rare” mean for the vintage Captain Cook?

“Rare” is not established as a market fact by the available production information: Rado’s cited history does not give an original production total, and no independent scarcity data is provided. A buyer looking at a vintage example should therefore assess the exact reference and the individual watch, rather than assume that every 1960s Captain Cook is scarce or valuable.

For a vintage watch, verify the reference, condition, provenance and seller policies before buying. The original’s rotating anchor and the MKII’s inner turning bezel are different design details, so identifying which version is offered matters as much as the shared Captain Cook name.
