To keep a compatible Pebble watch connected to its replacement services, pair it with the Pebble app, then visit boot.rebble.io and choose Switch to Rebble. This redirects the app from Pebble’s defunct servers to Rebble’s servers, where you can access the Rebble Store and continue installing watchfaces and watchapps. Rebble’s web services and store are the practical preservation layer; RebbleOS, a separate firmware project, remains experimental.
What Rebble preserves—and what it does not
Pebble ceased operations before Rebble emerged. What began as a supplement to official Pebble documentation grew into a community effort to keep the platform usable. Rebble describes its present focus as replacing key parts of the ecosystem, especially the app store and related web services, while maintaining and advancing Pebble functionality.
That distinction matters: keeping a watch connected to replacement services is not the same as replacing its firmware. Rebble’s practical setup lets a Pebble app use Rebble’s servers instead of the defunct Pebble servers. A separate project, RebbleOS, is an open-source firmware reimplementation, but it is not a finished, supported drop-in firmware replacement.
How to switch a Pebble watch to Rebble
Rebble’s setup guide documents an Android migration path. It starts with the Pebble app and a paired watch; the switch changes which servers the app uses.

- Install or open the Pebble app. Rebble’s Android guide says to install or sideload the app if needed.
- Pair the watch with the app. Complete pairing before starting the server switch.
- Open boot.rebble.io. Follow the page’s instructions and press Switch to Rebble.
- Use the Rebble Store in the app. After setup, browse and install watchfaces and watchapps through the app store.
Rebble calls this step “running boot”: telling the Pebble app to use Rebble servers rather than the defunct Pebble servers. The guide describes the Android process; it does not establish that the same steps or current app availability apply to every phone, operating system version, or Pebble model.
What you can do after switching
Rebble’s projects include the Rebble Store, continued work on open-sourced Pebble firmware, an official Pebble Android app for Rebble Web Services, a volunteer Rebble mobile app, and Gadgetbridge, an unaffiliated open-source Android alternative. These projects are not interchangeable: Rebble Web Services and the store provide the documented route to continued app and watchface access, while firmware and alternative-app efforts have their own development status and support boundaries.

Core Devices’ 2026 store page says its Pebble app store contains “15,000 beautiful watchfaces and watchapps.” That is the store’s stated catalog figure, not an independent count or a guarantee that every item works with every watch or phone.
Optional Rebble subscription
Rebble describes a subscription as a way to support the service and access dictation, weather pins in Timeline, and a faster Timeline synchronization period. The setup guide does not state a price here, so check Rebble’s current subscription information before deciding whether those features are worth paying for. The basic server migration and the optional features should not be confused: the subscription is presented as support for added functionality, not the switch itself.

Who runs Rebble, and why
Rebble is organized around community stewardship rather than a return to the original Pebble company. In a January 27, 2025 post, Rebble said it was transforming into a nonprofit so “the community (that’s you!) are the owners of Rebble.” The stated aims include education, embedded-systems learning, historical preservation, and open-source software.
The project frames Pebble preservation as a way to sustain a user-respectful alternative to attention-driven technology. That mission also explains why its work includes documentation, services, mobile tooling, and firmware development—not just an app catalog.

RebbleOS is not the same as the original PebbleOS
Google open-sourced PebbleOS; Rebble clarified in response to its 2025 announcement that Google made it available to everyone and that Rebble plans to make use of it. RebbleOS, however, is a distinct project: the pebble-dev repository describes it as an open-source reimplementation of firmware for devices formerly made by Pebble Technologies.
The stated goal is compatibility with original Pebble OS applications at the binary level and radio compatibility with smartphone apps designed for Pebble. Its feature matrix reports low or partial support across hardware targets, and its README characterizes hardware use as experimental. Rebble has also said that having access to original source code did not make firmware work instantly straightforward: the code first had to be made to build, and earlier replacement-firmware progress had been slow.

Treat RebbleOS as active development work, not a consumer-ready firmware you can assume is complete, compatible with your particular watch, or straightforward to install.
How current Pebble hardware fits into the picture
Pebble preservation is no longer only about legacy watches. Core Devices’ official store lists the Pebble Time 2 and Pebble Round 2, as well as the Pebble Index 01. The store describes the product philosophy as an always-on e-paper display, long battery life, physical buttons, a simple experience, and customization, with much of the work open source.
Those listings show a continuing hardware ecosystem, but a product listing alone does not establish shipping status, regional availability, warranty terms, repairability, or compatibility with every legacy Pebble service. Check the current Core Devices listing for those purchase-specific details. For owners deciding whether to keep an older watch or consider newer hardware, the useful comparison points are service continuity, store access, firmware maturity, display and battery priorities, software openness, and the practical availability of support and repairs.
