The NOMOS Club 701.1 is a modernized return to the compact, light-dial Club design introduced in 2007—not an unchanged reissue. NOMOS brought it back in 2023 with larger outlined luminous numerals, a more prominent small-seconds display and longer, wider hands. The closed-back 701.1 and display-back 703.1 offered two ways to wear that design; current official specifications for the 701.1 differ from the figures watch publications reported at launch, so the dates matter.
How the original Club returned
NOMOS introduced the Club in 2007. The original reference 701 was discontinued in 2017, by which time the family had expanded with branches including Club Campus and Club Sport. In 2023, NOMOS reintroduced the original-style Club as the 701.1 and 703.1. The return keeps the familiar compact steel case and light dial, but updates the face rather than reproducing the discontinued watch exactly. NOMOS’ Spring 2025 magazine described the family as having grown to 32 models at that time—a dated snapshot, not a permanent count. NOMOS Spring 2025 magazine
What changed on the dial
Launch coverage described a brighter white-silver dial and more assertive detailing. The numerals are larger and outlined in black, with luminous material; the small-seconds subdial is larger and snailed, with 20, 40 and 60 numerals. The minute track sits closer to the dial’s edge. Longer, wider black hands have red luminous inserts, while the logo and “Made in Germany” inscription appear more crisply printed. These are visual observations reported at launch, not explanations supplied by NOMOS. Monochrome Watches’ 2023 launch report
701.1 and 703.1: the caseback distinction
The references share the reintroduced design, but their casebacks differ. The 701.1 has a closed stainless-steel back on NOMOS’ current product page. The 703.1 was identified in 2023 launch reporting as the sapphire-display-back option. Choose based on whether you prefer a solid back or a view of the movement; do not assume the two references are interchangeable or that every current specification for the 701.1 applies to the 703.1.

That current listing is not the same specification set published at launch. Monochrome and Fratello’s October 2023 coverage described a 36 mm case, 8.2 mm thickness, 47.5 mm lug-to-lug, hand-wound Alpha caliber, 43-hour reserve, 17 jewels, 10 atm/100 m water resistance and an 18 mm brown Horween strap with red stitching. Both publications reported launch prices of EUR 1,300 for the 701.1 and EUR 1,500 for the 703.1; Fratello also gave EUR 780 as the historical price of the original 701. The available reporting establishes that the published figures differ, but not why, when any specification change occurred, or which production examples it applies to. Keep the current NOMOS listing separate from those dated launch accounts. Fratello Watches’ 2023 report · Monochrome Watches’ 2023 report

How to compare it with an older 701 or the 703.1
- Caseback: The 701.1 has a closed back; the 703.1 was launched with a sapphire display back. Decide whether seeing the movement matters to you.
- Fit: Compare lug-to-lug as well as diameter, and try the watch on if possible. The current 701.1 listing says 44.3 mm lug-to-lug, while 2023 reports gave 47.5 mm; the reason and production boundary for that difference are not established.
- Dial reading: The redesigned numerals, more prominent seconds display and luminous details are the central visual changes from the original-style dial. Whether that suits you is a matter of preference.
- Winding and water use: The current 701.1 is manually wound, and NOMOS describes its 10 atm rating as suitable for swimming. Consider your winding preference and intended water use; the stated rating is not, by itself, a dive-watch specification.
- Strap fit: The current listing specifies an 18 mm lug width. For a replacement strap, check the strap-end shape and spring-bar compatibility as well as width.
- Price and condition: Treat the original 701’s reported EUR 780 price and the 2023 reissue prices as historical figures, not current offers. A pre-owned original also needs to be judged by its age and condition, separately from the redesigned 2023 return; check current local pricing for either reference.
What the return means for the Club
The reintroduced 701 is best understood as a revival of the original Club’s restrained proportions and light-dial character, with a more legible, sportier face. It reconnects the present collection to its 2007 starting point without pretending that the intervening years—or the redesign—did not happen. NOMOS’ own description calls Club “Sporty, youthful, and unconventional”; that is manufacturer copy, not an independent performance assessment. No accuracy figure or independent performance test is established by the cited sources.
