It brought the brand’s mainspring-powered, escapement-free timekeeping system into a 600 m saturation diver, extending a professional-diver lineage that began decades earlier. Later references include the SBDB008, SBDB009 and SBDB013, though the reference history is documented here by secondary source Fratello rather than Seiko’s opened history pages.
What is the Seiko Spring Drive Tuna?
It is Seiko’s 600 m saturation diver introduced in 2005, distinguished within the Tuna family by its Spring Drive movement. Seiko’s official diver chronology calls it “The world’s first Spring Drive Diver’s 600M.” The manufacturer describes a one-mainspring movement, one-second-per-day accuracy, a high-intensity titanium case and sapphire glass. These are Seiko’s historical specifications, not independent test results. Seiko’s diver-watch history
How Spring Drive works
Spring Drive is mechanically powered: energy comes from a wound mainspring. Its regulator operates without a conventional escapement, using electronic timekeeping regulation to control that mechanical power. Seiko presents the result as a combination of mechanical-watch power and electronic precision, and states accuracy of one second per day. Its FAQ describes Spring Drive as “our unique automatic watch with one-second-a-day accuracy.” Seiko’s Spring Drive FAQ
Where it fits in Seiko’s 600 m diver history
The Spring Drive model was not the start of Seiko’s 600 m professional-diver story. The brand’s official heritage history dates its titanium-cased Professional Diver’s 600m to 1975, describing it as the world’s first diver’s watch with a titanium case. A quartz Professional Diver’s 600M saturation-diving model followed in 1978. Seiko’s heritage history

Seiko also reports that the earlier quartz 600 m watch was carried aboard the SHINKAI 2000 research submarine to 1,062 m in 1983. That episode concerns the predecessor, not the 2005 Spring Drive Tuna; it should not be read as a test of the Spring Drive watch or as changing its stated 600 m rating.
SBDB008, SBDB009 and SBDB013: the reported reference sequence
Fratello’s secondary history identifies the references and distinctions below. Seiko’s opened official pages do not confirm these reference-specific details, so the chronology and edition information should be understood as Fratello’s account. Fratello’s Seiko Tuna history

| 5R65-0AJ0 / SBDB008 | Fratello dates it to 2013, for the centenary of Seiko watchmaking. It describes gold accents and a limited run of 300 pieces, aimed mainly at Japan. |
| SBDB009 | Fratello reports an all-black version following in 2014. An edition total is not stated in that account. |
| SBDB013 | Fratello identifies this as a later version serving markets outside Japan. A release year and edition total are not stated in that account. |
Fratello’s strict taxonomy of “Tuna” designs excludes the Spring Drive model from the original monocoque group because it uses a screw case back rather than monocoque construction. That is Fratello’s classification, not a universally settled definition of the Tuna name.

What distinguishes it from other Seiko Tuna models?
- Movement: The 2005 model’s defining distinction is Spring Drive; Seiko’s chronology identifies it specifically as its first Spring Drive 600 m diver.
- Role in the lineage: It followed Seiko’s 1975 titanium and 1978 quartz 600 m divers rather than inaugurating the brand’s deep-diving series.
- Design classification: Its screw case back leads Fratello to exclude it from a strict monocoque Tuna grouping, even though the article’s subject is commonly referred to as the Spring Drive Tuna.
- Later references: Fratello’s account distinguishes the gold-accented SBDB008 from the black SBDB009 and later SBDB013; it does not establish differences in movement between these references.
