A rotating bezel is a movable ring around a watch dial that turns the minute hand into a simple elapsed-time or countdown display. On a common dive-watch bezel, align its zero marker with the minute hand when an interval begins; the hand then shows elapsed minutes against the bezel scale. The markings and direction of rotation determine how to interpret a particular bezel.
What does a rotating bezel do?
The bezel provides a timing reference you set by hand. It works with the watch’s ordinary minute hand, so the watch can track an interval without a separate timer display. You can use an elapsed-time bezel for a dive, a meeting, or another event where keeping track of minutes is useful. Seiko’s instructions show both diving and everyday interval timing: Seiko: How to use the rotating bezel.
In horology, a rotating bezel is a case-side function, not a mechanism inside the movement. WatchTime discusses it as a “small complication,” but sources may distinguish this external timing feature from movement complications: WatchTime: The small complications: Rotating bezel.
How to use an elapsed-time bezel
- At the start of the interval, turn the bezel until its zero marker—or the marker identified as the start of the scale—lines up with the minute hand.
- As time passes, read the minute hand against the bezel markings. The scale shows how many minutes have elapsed since you aligned the marker.
- For a one-way bezel, turn it only in its permitted direction. Seiko instructs users not to force the bezel clockwise when it is designed to turn counterclockwise.
The method depends on the scale, not just on the fact that the ring turns. Seiko’s instructions and Citizen’s support page describe the elapsed-time method; Citizen: How to Use the Rotating Bezel to measure time.

Elapsed-time and countdown scales are not the same
A conventional elapsed-time scale starts at zero and counts minutes forward from the point you set it against the minute hand. A reverse-marked countdown scale is arranged to show the time remaining until a chosen point instead. Read the markings and the maker’s instructions before using a bezel; do not assume that every rotating bezel counts in the same direction or is intended for diving. WatchTime describes the distinction between elapsed-time and reverse-running countdown scales.
Why many dive bezels turn only one way
Many diver-style bezels are designed to rotate counterclockwise only. If the bezel is accidentally moved in that direction during a dive, the elapsed-time reading becomes longer rather than shorter. That can lead the wearer to act more conservatively instead of believing less time has passed. Seiko explains the safety rationale in its official instructions; Citizen likewise describes one-way rotation as a way to reduce the risk of error.

Not every rotating bezel is one-way: the direction depends on the watch’s design. Grand Seiko’s instructions describe a unidirectional rotating bezel, while Bremont explains the use of rotating bezels on dive watches: Grand Seiko: Unidirectional rotating bezel and Bremont: Why do dive watches have rotating bezels?.
A bezel is a timing aid, not a dive instrument
Seiko’s instruction is explicit: “Use the display of the elapsed time by the rotating bezel only as a guide during diving.” A bezel measures elapsed time; by itself, it does not show how much air remains, calculate decompression status, or establish whether a dive is safe. Follow the applicable dive procedures and use the instruments required for the dive.

- DIVER-INSPIRED DESIGN — Inspired by the sea, the MDV-106B is styled after classic dive watches and delivers 200-meter water resistance at an unbeatable price point. The black resin band and stainless steel case give it a classic look, while the anti-reverse rotary bezel adds authentic dive-watch character.
- STAINLESS STEEL CASE WITH SCREW-LOCK CROWN & CASEBACK — The MDV-106B features a stainless steel case and a reliable screw-lock crown for enhanced water resistance protection. Screw-down crown and screw-lock caseback work together to keep the movement sealed and secure during water activities — a construction standard found on dive watches far above this price range.
- LARGE FLUORESCENT HANDS & INDICES FOR INSTANT READABILITY — The dial features hands and hour indices with large fluorescent areas for easy reading in low-light and underwater conditions. The clean 3-hand analog layout with date display at 3 o'clock keeps the dial uncluttered and immediately legible at a glance.
- 44MM STAINLESS STEEL CASE | 22MM LUG WIDTH | MINERAL GLASS — The case measures 44mm in diameter, 12mm in height, with a 49mm lug-to-lug length and a standard 22mm lug width — making strap upgrades effortless with a vast range of aftermarket options. Mineral glass protects the dial from everyday scratches and impacts.
- 3-YEAR BATTERY & 200M WATER RESISTANCE — Powered by an SR626SW battery with an approximate 3-year life, the case measures 49.5 × 46.3 × 12.1mm and weighs 92 grams. At 200 meters of water resistance, the Duro is versatile and suitable for all situations — whether in the water, hiking, running, or at the office.
What to check before using a particular bezel
- Scale: determine whether it tracks elapsed time or time remaining.
- Direction: check whether the bezel turns one way or both ways, and never force it against its intended movement.
- Markings: confirm which marker is the start point and how the minute divisions are laid out.
- Intended use: consult the maker’s instructions rather than assuming that a rotating bezel makes a watch suitable for scuba diving.
For example, Blancpain describes its Fifty Fathoms Tech three-hour bezel as extending the usual 60-minute scale to three hours. That is the company’s description of its specific design, not a general feature of rotating bezels: Blancpain: Three Hours of Silence (June 8, 2026). Blancpain also says the Fifty Fathoms was born in 1953 as the first true diver’s tool watch; that historical-priority statement is the company’s own claim.
