Tom Hardy’s RAF pilot Farrier wears an Omega “RAF” 1940, reference CK2129, according to watch publications that cite an Omega identification. In the film, the watch is more than a period detail: Farrier uses it to estimate his remaining fuel after his aircraft’s gauge is damaged. Its real-world story—a reported order for 2,000 watches for RAF crews in 1940—adds another layer, though the available accounts do not establish that the individual watch used on set was one of those original pieces.

Which Omega watch does Tom Hardy wear in Dunkirk?

Time+Tide identifies Farrier’s watch as Omega’s “RAF” 1940, reference CK2129. The publication says an Omega employee confirmed the identification; Time+Tide’s earlier watch-spotting article and Gear Patrol also name the CK2129. Time+Tide’s identification is best understood as a model identification, not proof of the prop’s individual provenance.

That distinction matters to collectors: the sources do not demonstrate that Hardy wore the very same physical watch delivered to the British Ministry of Defence in 1940. They identify the model represented on screen, but do not trace the specific production watch’s ownership or history.

Why Farrier relies on it in the film

Farrier’s aircraft fuel gauge is damaged, so he uses his watch to work out how much fuel remains. The watch’s practical role fits the film’s air storyline: it makes time and dwindling resources tangible while the pilot tries to complete his mission.

That use also connects the watch to Dunkirk’s suspenseful structure. The film follows the evacuation through land, sea, and air perspectives, keeping events close to what characters can perceive. In a 2017 interview, director Christopher Nolan described the film as “intense, suspenseful and objective” from the characters’ points of view. The watch gives Farrier a small, legible instrument for judging what comes next.

What the CK2129’s wartime history is reported to be

Time+Tide reproduces a historical note it attributes to Omega’s book A Journey Through Time. The note describes an urgent order by Omega Watch Co. London for 2,000 watches with rotating bezels, intended for Royal Air Force crews. It is dated January 5, 1940, and says delivery began March 10, 1940. Gear Patrol also reports an order for 2,000 rotating-bezel watches delivered by March 1940.

These accounts reproduce or report Omega’s historical record; the underlying archival order is not independently examined in the cited articles. The 2,000 figure refers to this reported RAF order, not to all Omega watches supplied to British forces.

Gear Patrol describes the rotating bezel as a way to track elapsed time, with the crown locking the bezel in place. That feature gives the design a clear practical logic for an aircrew watch: set a time reference, then keep it from shifting during use.

The ticking in the score is a separate watch story

The watch’s on-screen function is easy to conflate with Dunkirk’s persistent ticking musical motif, but Nolan described a separate origin for the sound. In Angela Dawson’s July 17, 2017 Front Row Features interview, Nolan said he recorded a watch he owned and gave the recording to composer Hans Zimmer. He and Zimmer developed it into a rhythmic language for the score, meant to build momentum with the picture.

“The genesis of the track is a recording I made of a watch that I own that I gave to Hans (Zimmer, the composer) and we developed sort of a rhythmic language of how we would build up the score to fuse with the picture and create a sense of forward momentum for the film.”

Nolan did not identify his recorded watch as the CK2129 worn by Hardy. The prop and the score’s ticking therefore belong to related themes of time and pressure, but the interview does not connect them as the same watch.

Why the CK2129 makes a fitting film watch

The appeal is the overlap between an object’s job and a story’s demands. The reported RAF-order history gives the watch a credible period association; Farrier’s damaged gauge turns a watch into a working instrument; and the film’s structure makes each remaining moment feel consequential. It is a compact example of how a historically grounded object can carry both practical and dramatic weight without needing to become the subject of the scene.
