The selections range from complicated Patek Philippe watches to independent makers, rare configurations and a prototype. They reflect the writers’ tastes—not a ranking by estimate, condition or auction result. One additional pick, an Omega offered by Heritage Auctions in the United States, is not a Geneva lot.
What the picks have in common—and what they don’t
The team’s choices are best compared by the reasons given for selecting them: rarity or uniqueness, maker and provenance, movement construction and complications, dimensions, materials and dial design, and personal taste. The preview does not provide a consistent basis for comparing estimates, condition, buyer’s premiums, realized prices or investment value. It is a pre-sale roundup, not an account of what happened at auction.
Details and rarity claims below are those reported by Time+Tide in its 8 May 2025 preview; they have not been independently verified here against auction catalogues.
Phillips: complications, craft and unusual configurations
Patek Philippe ref. 3974 — lot 103
Russell Sheldrake’s pick is a perpetual-calendar minute repeater, a combination of two major complications. He points to the Jean-Pierre Hagmann case-maker stamp and calls it a strong example of the model. His interest is also in its neo-vintage character: traditional watchmaking standards paired with more modernized materials and mechanisms.

Konstantin Chaykin ThinKing & PalanKing final prototype — lot 15
The preview identifies this as the final prototype of the ThinKing, which it says was not yet in production or on the market when the article appeared. Time+Tide reported a thickness of 1.65 mm and a weight of 13 g without the strap. Those figures make the watch’s extreme thinness the central point of interest; the preview’s claim that it took the world’s-thinnest-mechanical-watch title from established brands should be treated as the article’s characterization, not an independently confirmed or current record.
Breguet ref. 3237 “Tuxedo” — lot 83
Pietro Pilla singles out the contrast between the onyx outer dial track and silver guilloché center. The preview says five examples are known in this configuration, a rarity claim attributed to Time+Tide rather than an independently established census.
Roger Smith Series 1 — lot 89
The 38 mm, time-only Series 1 appeals to the writer for restraint rather than complication-count: a composed dial, guilloché work, a co-axial escapement and a hand-finished movement. It is a pick centered on execution and craft.

Haldimann H1 Central Tourbillon — lot 52
Borna Bošnjak highlights the unusual placement of the tourbillon at the center of the watch. The preview describes the movement as handmade without CNC machining and says it uses three barrels. It also calls this only the third H1 to come to auction; both construction and auction-history details are claims reported by Time+Tide.

Jamie Weiss describes this 1961 platinum minute repeater as the last known example in platinum and says it had not previously been seen. The article reports only three ref. 6448 watches known, with the other two in white gold, and says this was the last minute repeater Vacheron made for 30 years. These are the preview’s rarity and historical claims, not a separate catalogue verification.
Philippe Dufour Simplicity “Unique” — lot 129
The lot’s butterfly-wing dial was created by artist Dominique Arpa-Cirpka. Time+Tide describes the movement as hand-finished and assembled by Dufour, and says the sale was in support of the Philippe & Elisabeth Dufour Foundation. The combination of an individual dial treatment, a named independent watchmaker and a charitable purpose distinguishes this pick from the more conventional model-focused selections.

Christie’s: a five-watch F.P. Journe set
F.P. Journe Ruthenium Set 5/99 — lots 74–79
Pietro Pilla’s selection comprises five watches produced between 2001 and 2003. As described in the preview, they have 40 mm platinum cases, ruthenium-covered movements and 18k gold dials covered in ruthenium. Pilla’s standout is the Octa Jour / Nuit, which he says was exclusive to the Ruthenium Collection rather than regular production. The set’s appeal is therefore not just the shared finish, but the unusual scope of a coordinated group and the collection-specific model.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Chronographe Retrograde ref. 270.2.69 — lot 291
Zach Blass prefers this 1990s Reverso to the later Tribute Chronograph, citing the earlier watch’s more compact 42 mm case length. Time+Tide reports that the model was limited to 500 pieces. The comparison is the writer’s preference, with wearability—not a claim that one is universally superior—at its heart.

Tom Austin calls this yellow-gold single-pusher chronograph his personal favourite. The curved Tortue case and compact chronograph movement are the reasons he gives, illustrating a selection driven by the relationship between case shape and mechanism.

Patek Philippe ref. 530A-SCI — lot 773
The preview describes this stainless-steel watch as made in 1939 and sold in 1942, with a salmon-pink dial and applied Breguet numerals. It calls the example possibly unique; that uncertainty matters, so it should not be treated as a confirmed one-of-one watch.
An additional United States pick: Heritage Auctions
Omega Speedmaster ref. 145.022-69 presented to Russell Schweickart — lot 54185
This is Zach Blass’s selection from Heritage Auctions, not one of the Geneva sale lots. The preview emphasizes the caseback engraving and reports that the Speedmaster was presented to Apollo 9 astronaut Russell Schweickart in connection with the Apollo program. It says Schweickart rediscovered the watch after it had spent decades stored away.
Time+Tide reproduces Schweickart’s account to Heritage Auctions: “The event in which we were given the watches by Omega was in November of 1969,” Schweickart explains to Heritage Auctions. The quotation situates the watch in a personal recollection of the presentation; the preview does not provide an auction outcome.
How to read the roundup
These selections are useful as a guide to what twelve watch enthusiasts found compelling in a crowded auction season, not as a buyer’s shortlist ranked by value. Some choices rest on reported rarity, others on movement architecture, case proportions, dial design, provenance or personal affection. The preview supplies no consistent condition assessments or financial comparisons, so those questions require the relevant auction catalogue and sale records rather than this staff-picks article.
