These five are editorial picks, selected for historical significance, useful complications, design distinction, and variety—not independently tested winners or a Seiko-endorsed ranking. The company’s announcements establish their specifications and design intent, but not sales performance or a consensus on which watch is best.
How the five picks compare
| Pick | Reference | Movement or complication | Key details |

1. Prospex SJE093: the historically resonant diver
The SJE093 re-creates Seiko’s 1965 diver, often called the 62MAS by enthusiasts. Seiko’s July 5, 2023 announcement described the original as “In 1965, Seiko introduced its, and Japan’s, first-ever diver’s watch.” The new model uses caliber 6L37, a sapphire crystal, and a case rated to 200 meters of water resistance. Seiko announced an edition of 1,965 pieces, with availability scheduled for August 2023. Seiko’s SJE093 announcement.

This is the pick for a buyer drawn to the company’s dive-watch history rather than a modern travel complication. Its limited-edition quantity is a launch specification, not an indication of current stock; do not assume a new example is readily available today.
2. Prospex SPB381, SPB383, and SPB385: a diver with a practical GMT
These 2023 interpretations of Seiko’s 1968 diver add a second-time-zone hand to a Prospex diver. Caliber 6R54’s GMT hand can be adjusted independently, making it useful for tracking another time zone without treating the watch as a simple second-hours display. Seiko specifies a 72-hour power reserve and 200-meter water resistance, alongside Lumibrite and a ceramic unidirectional bezel. Seiko’s 1968 GMT diver announcement.

#1 Best Overall
- Seiko 5 Automatic Black Arabic Dial Men's Watch SNKP21J1
Choose this group if the GMT function matters as much as the dive-watch design. The announced references are SPB381, SPB383, and SPB385; check the precise reference and any regional suffix when comparing listings.
3. Presage Craftsmanship Series: traditional dial work
Seiko’s 110th Anniversary Presage Craftsmanship Series included four limited-edition models using traditional Japanese techniques. The enamel-dial variant is the clearest dress-watch choice in this group: its white dial was made by master craftsman Mitsuru Yokosawa and his team, and it has day, date, and power-reserve indications. Seiko’s Presage anniversary announcement.
This pick is about dial craft and a more formal design, not a claim that every model in the four-watch series has the same dial or indications. If shopping, identify the enamel variant specifically rather than relying on the broader series name.
4. Prospex Speedtimer SRQ047 and SRQ049: the mechanical chronograph
Announced in November 2023, the SRQ047 and limited-edition SRQ049 take design cues from a 1972 Speedtimer. Both use caliber 8R48, with a vertical clutch and column wheel, and have a 42.0 mm case diameter. The SRQ049 is distinguished by a blue-grey dial, silver-white subdials, and an included black leather strap. Seiko’s Speedtimer announcement.
Rank #2
- STUNNING BLUE DIAL: this automatic men's watch features a deep blue, pressed pattern and gloss finish surrounded by a stainless steel watch case
- AUTOMATIC: these self-winding, automatic men's watches are powered by your movement, with a power reserve of 41 hours
- STAINLESS STEEL: features a durable stainless steel watch case and bracelet with see through caseback
- WATER-RESISTANT: these men's wrist watches are water-resistant down to 50 meters
- 4R35 CALIBER: equipped with the reliable caliber 4R35 automatic movement, this accurate men's watch keeps precise time
This is the list’s dedicated mechanical chronograph option. The SRQ049’s color and strap details are specific to that limited reference; they should not be generalized to the SRQ047.

The 2023 Marinemaster release is a strong fifth pick for readers looking for a more premium diver. Seiko’s Japanese-language announcement connects its design to the 1965 diver and highlights caliber 6L37, a 12.3 mm case thickness, and a see-through caseback—a first for a Seiko diver, according to that announcement. Seiko’s Japanese Marinemaster announcement.
Because the cited announcement is for Japan, confirm the exact reference and regional configuration before using those details to compare a watch offered elsewhere. The broader 2023 Seiko field also included Astron GPS Solar, Seiko 5 Sports, and other Presage and Prospex models, so this is a curated selection rather than a complete inventory of notable releases.
Which 2023 Seiko release fits your priorities?
- Choose the SJE093 if the 1965 diver’s history is the main draw and you are evaluating an example’s actual availability.
- Choose the SPB381, SPB383, or SPB385 if you want a diver with an independently adjustable GMT hand.
- Look at the Presage enamel variant if traditional dial craft and day, date, and power-reserve indications are more relevant than a dive specification.
- Consider the SRQ047 or SRQ049 if a mechanical chronograph is the complication you want; the SRQ049 is the distinct limited-edition dial-and-strap version.
- Consider the Marinemaster if the slimmer stated case profile and see-through caseback are priorities, while checking the regional reference.
These releases are notable for different reasons, not directly interchangeable alternatives. Seiko’s launch material supplies model specifications and design context, but it does not provide comparative test results, sales figures, or reader voting that would establish an objective winner.
