The Tornek-Rayville TR-900 was a real U.S. military dive watch, not a fictional model. Its “mythical” reputation comes from its rarity and place in the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms lineage. The sources agree on that connection but give different accounts of when the watches were delivered.
What the TR-900 was
Blancpain’s historical account traces the TR-900 to the early-1960s MIL-SPEC 2, describing it as a military model that evolved under the Tornek-Rayville name. That makes the TR-900 part of the Fifty Fathoms military lineage, while its Tornek-Rayville designation identifies the watch supplied under that name. Blancpain’s historical account
Why its moisture indicator mattered
Blancpain describes a warning feature built into the dial: a disk at six o’clock changed from white to red if liquid entered the case. It was a visible indication of a potential case-sealing problem, particularly relevant in a military dive watch. Blancpain’s historical account
When were TR-900s delivered?
The available accounts do not establish one agreed delivery chronology. Tornek-Rayville’s current brand history says the first TR-900s were delivered in 1963. Phillips, by contrast, describes about 1,000 watches supplied in two batches, in late 1964 and mid-1966. These are attributed accounts, not dates that can be reconciled from the sources cited here.

- Tornek-Rayville’s brand history gives 1963 as the first delivery year.
- Phillips’s 2020 auction catalogue describes approximately 1,000 watches delivered in batches in late 1964 and mid-1966.
Neither account establishes how many examples survive today, so a precise surviving-watch count should not be inferred from the approximate supply figure.
What is documented about a known auction example?
Phillips catalogued an example as circa 1966, in stainless steel, measuring 41 mm, with an automatic AS 1361 movement and a nylon NATO strap. Those details describe the catalogued watch; they do not prove that every TR-900 had the same configuration or that any particular surviving example retains its original parts.

How to assess a TR-900 listing
For a watch this scarce, a convincing name or resemblance is not enough. Use the same evidence-focused approach you would apply to any high-value vintage military watch:

- Provenance: Look for a documented ownership or sales history and records that connect the specific watch to the TR-900 designation.
- Condition and originality: Ask which components are original, replaced, refinished, or restored, and request clear photographs of the dial, case, movement, and any relevant markings.
- Configuration: Compare the exact watch with well-documented catalogue examples, without assuming that one auction example defines every legitimate TR-900.
- Service history: Request dated service records and details of work performed. A service claim without supporting documentation is not the same as a verified history.
- Seller documentation: Check that the seller can substantiate the watch’s identity and condition, and consider an independent specialist’s assessment before committing.
A modern watch inspired by the TR-900’s design is a different proposition from a historical TR-900. The reviewed sources do not establish a current model that can be recommended as an equivalent substitute.

Blancpain’s history supports the TR-900’s connection to the Fifty Fathoms military lineage and documents the moisture indicator. The Tornek-Rayville brand history and Phillips provide different delivery chronologies, while Phillips offers catalogue details and a result for one auctioned watch. The cited sources do not establish current availability, today’s market value, a dependable survivor count, or exact strap dimensions. Phillips’s mention of a nylon NATO strap also does not establish that a generic strap is original or will fit a TR-900.

For further historical context and a catalogue precedent, consult Blancpain’s Fifty Fathoms history, Tornek-Rayville’s brand history, and Phillips’s TR-900 auction record. Sotheby’s catalogue search is another place to look for auction documentation; catalogue records remain the auction house’s descriptions rather than primary Navy procurement files.
