Ulysse Nardin introduced the Freak in 2001 as a mechanical watch in which the movement itself displays the time: there is no conventional dial, set of hands or crown. Its original silicon escapement and rotating one-hour carousel challenged familiar watch design, and the idea has continued through later materials and calibres. The “20 years” framing belongs to the 2001–2021 anniversary window; in 2026, the manufacturer marks the Freak’s 25th anniversary.

Why the Freak was different from the start

Ulysse Nardin credits Dr. Ludwig Oechslin with conceiving the Freak, with Rolf Schnyder leading the brand’s effort to bring the unconventional design to market. Introduced in 2001, it replaced the usual fixed dial and moving hands with a display built from the movement itself. The manufacturer’s historical account of the Freak 2001 describes a barrel that rotates once every 12 hours and an orbital flying carousel that completes a circuit each hour.

That architecture makes the mechanism the watch face: components travel across the front of the watch to indicate time. It also means the Freak’s appearance is inseparable from how it works, rather than being a conventional dial with an unusual decoration.

How the original Freak tells time

The original design has no conventional dial, hands or crown. The flying carousel acts as the minute indicator as it travels around the watch, while the barrel’s 12-hour rotation provides the hour indication. The time is set by turning the bezel rather than using a crown, a distinctive interaction that remains part of the Freak concept.

The visible movement also put the escapement on display. The original Dual Direct Escapement used two silicon wheels. Ulysse Nardin says the idea drew inspiration from Breguet’s échappement naturel; the brand’s history also notes a trade-off: the dual-wheel arrangement consumed more energy than a traditional Swiss lever escapement. That is the manufacturer’s account of the design, not an independent comparative test.

Silicon, DIAMonSIL and the Freak’s technical lineage

Ulysse Nardin describes the 2001 Freak as the first mechanical watch to use silicon, specifically in its escapement components. That scope matters: the claim concerns silicon’s use in a mechanical watch, not a claim that the entire watch was made from silicon. The exposed escapement made the material choice part of the watch’s identity as well as its engineering.

In 2007, the brand introduced Freak DIAMonSIL, which it describes as a dual Ulysse escapement using diamond-coated silicon: a diamond layer deposited on a silicon substrate. The progression was from silicon escapement components to a harder surface treatment. The manufacturer’s heritage timeline identifies the 2007 milestone; it does not establish a quantified accuracy gain or prove that the material eliminates maintenance.

Ulysse Nardin reports that the Freak platform has produced 35 patents and 17 calibres, alongside later developments including an automatic double oscillator and an automatic double tourbillon. These are the company’s platform totals and examples, rather than independently audited measures of innovation.

Freak ONE: the original idea in a current form

Freak ONE is explicitly inspired by the first Freak and retains the “no dial, no hands and no crown” approach. For reference 2405-500-2A/3C, Ulysse Nardin specifies a self-winding UN-240 calibre with a flying carousel and DIAMonSIL escapement. Its stated specifications are:

  • 229 parts and 15 jewels
  • Frequency of 3 Hz, or 21,600 vibrations per hour
  • Manufacturer-stated power reserve of 90 hours
  • Hours and minutes display, with time set by the bezel

These are manufacturer specifications for that reference, not results from an independent performance test. The Freak ONE product page also says the model received the GPHG Iconic Watch Prize in 2023.

The broader collection includes multiple Freak ONE variants, so specifications should be checked against the exact reference. For example, Ulysse Nardin lists the Navy Blue version as a 44 mm model with UN-240, a stated 90-hour reserve, DIAMonSIL and Grinder automatic winding. Its details are on the official Freak ONE Navy Blue page.

What the 2026 Freak X says about the 25-year mark

The “20 years” in the original title describes the 2001–2021 anniversary window, not the Freak’s current age. Ulysse Nardin’s 2026 announcement calls the year the Freak’s 25th anniversary, alongside the company’s 180th anniversary.

The announced Freak X Grey is a distinct expression of the platform, not simply a Freak ONE with a new dial. The manufacturer says it has been completely reengineered over more than two years of development and specifies a 41 mm model with the UN-232 calibre and a 72-hour power reserve. The announcement describes a monobloc case in recycled steel or rose gold. These are details from the brand’s 2026 Freak X Grey page, not an independent assessment of the watch in use.

How to distinguish the Freak ONE and Freak X examples

Model example Diameter and case Calibre and winding Escapement and reserve
Freak ONE, reference 2405-500-2A/3C Not stated on the cited product page UN-240; self-winding DIAMonSIL; 90 hours, manufacturer-stated

Freak X Grey, 2026 announcement 41 mm; monobloc case in recycled steel or rose gold UN-232; winding arrangement not stated on the cited page Escapement material treatment not stated on the cited page; 72 hours, manufacturer-stated

The figures and descriptions in this table come from Ulysse Nardin’s pages for the Freak ONE, Freak ONE Navy Blue and Freak X Grey. They identify specific examples, not every variant in either family.

What the Freak’s legacy amounts to

The Freak’s innovation is not one isolated complication. It is a linked design decision: make the movement the display, let its rotation communicate time, and expose an unconventional escapement as part of the watch’s face. Ulysse Nardin’s material story—from silicon wheels in 2001 to diamond-coated silicon in DIAMonSIL—extends that approach, while the 2026 Freak X announcement shows the platform continuing with a different calibre and case format.

Those facts explain why the Freak is a landmark in Ulysse Nardin’s own history. They do not, by themselves, establish comparative accuracy, long-term service costs, market value or wearability; those questions require evidence beyond the manufacturer’s specifications and historical accounts.
