In an October 2024 account, collector Tomas Rosputinsky described completing what he considered the fourth known example, assembled from genuine, period-correct Gallet parts rather than presented as an untouched factory watch. Its story is a useful reminder that rarity, originality and configuration are separate questions.
What is the Gallet Multichron 12 Decimal?
It is a Decimal-scale variant of the Gallet Multichron 12, a family that appeared in multiple generations and configurations. The Decimal should not be treated as interchangeable with every watch bearing the Multichron 12 name: movements, case construction, dimensions and dial scales differ by model. An archived Gallet World reference describes, for example, an early series introduced in 1939 with a Universal Genève 281 (Martel) movement, as well as later configurations such as the waterproof Jim Clark reference 5193 with Valjoux 72 or Excelsior Park 40 movements.
Rosputinsky’s October 17, 2024 Fratello article is the direct account of the Decimal variant discussed here. He reported that three examples were known before his watch was completed and described four by the article’s end. That is his collector knowledge at that time, not an official production total or a verified census today. No authoritative production figure for this exact variant is established by the available sources. Read Rosputinsky’s account.
Why does the example in the article raise an originality question?
Rosputinsky describes his completed watch as assembled from genuine, period-correct Gallet parts. That is not the same claim as saying it left the factory in that exact configuration or has remained untouched. The distinction matters with scarce vintage watches: a watch may contain authentic components while still having a complex assembly history.

The article recounts an earlier, unusual example with incorrect hands and a caseback without Gallet signing, as well as a missing expected H mark on a lug. Its Decimal track appeared irregularly printed. Rosputinsky says knowledgeable collectors considered that dial original, but he and other collectors could not determine why its printing looked imprecise. Those observations concern the examples described; they are not universal pass-or-fail authentication rules.
To complete his own watch, Rosputinsky says he later acquired a better dial and a donor case whose serial-number prefix matched the reference example, then assembled the watch using original Gallet parts. This account illustrates why “all parts are genuine” and “factory-original watch” are different descriptions.

What movement and date are attributed to the Decimal?
Rosputinsky used serial-number research to place his case and Daniel Horton’s example at approximately 1965–1966. On that basis, he associates the watches with the earlier Excelsior Park EP40, before the EP40-68 update. This is a collector attribution, not a date confirmed by archived Gallet sales records; Rosputinsky says those records are unavailable.
Do not infer the Decimal’s caliber from another Multichron 12 listing. A Hodinkee listing for one sold late-1960s Multichron 12 specifies an Excelsior Park 40-68, a 37 mm stainless-steel case, 20 mm lug width, tachymeter and telemeter scales, and stated 30 m water resistance. Those are details of that individual watch, not specifications established for the Decimal. See the specific Hodinkee listing.

How should a prospective buyer assess one?
There is no single visual clue in the cited accounts that proves a Decimal is authentic. Ask for evidence on the individual watch and have it assessed against documentation for that specific variant.
- Request sharp, well-lit photographs of the full dial, Decimal track and printing, hands, movement, caseback, lug markings and serial numbers.
- Ask for the seller’s account of the watch’s provenance, repairs and any replacement or donor parts. Treat owner recollections as provenance claims, not factory records.
- Compare the movement, case details and dial configuration with reliable material for the Decimal specifically; do not substitute specifications from another Multichron 12 configuration.
- Have originality and mechanical condition evaluated by a watchmaker experienced with vintage chronographs before purchase.
- Do not use rarity alone to infer a fair price. The available sources do not establish a current market value or a reliable recent sale for this exact variant.
Service history deserves particular attention. A separate Fratello account describes servicing a different Gallet Multichron Decimal with an Excelsior Park 4 manual-wind, two-register movement, including sourcing a mainspring and replacing a crystal. That EP4 is not evidence for the EP40 attributed to the watch here, and reports of parts availability can change over time. The account does, however, underscore the value of a specialist assessment rather than assuming that a general repair will be straightforward. Read the separate service account.

Does a Bonklip bracelet fit?
Rosputinsky reports a Bonklip bracelet on one known Decimal example, making it a period-style option to investigate—not proof that every bracelet of that type will fit every watch. Verify the lug width and end fit on the actual case before buying. The 20 mm lug measurement reported by Hodinkee applies to its separate late-1960s Multichron 12 listing and cannot establish the Decimal’s width.

Gallet’s September 3, 2026 press material connects 1960s Multichron 12 Scientific models with the collection’s technical timing identity, but the current Multichron Sport is a separate watch. Gallet describes that model as a 41 mm chronograph with a Gallet 23 caliber based on the Sellita SW510, approximately 65 hours of power reserve, a tachymeter and interchangeable quick-release straps. None of those modern specifications should be assigned to the vintage Decimal. See Gallet’s current Multichron Sport material.
