The Cyma Watersport is a vintage chronograph family, not a single fixed specification. In the 2010 Fratello feature, the watch owned by Bas van Dorp had a 38 mm case, a tri-compax dial, and a hand-wound Valjoux 72. Other Watersport examples have been cataloged with different calibers, so identify and assess the individual watch rather than assuming every one matches that example.
What movement is in the Cyma Watersport chronograph?
It depends on the watch. Fratello identified Bas van Dorp’s featured example as having a hand-wound Valjoux 72, reporting a rate of 18,000 beats per hour and a 46-hour power reserve. Those are specifications reported in the 2010 article, not measurements from a current test of that watch. The article noted that the Valjoux 72 also appeared in vintage Rolex Daytona models; that is a shared movement-family reference, not a claim that the watches are equivalent. Other cataloged Watersport chronographs differ: Antiquorum described a circa-1940 example with caliber 400 and 17 jewels, while a specialist dealer listed a separate clamshell example with a Valjoux 22. These listings establish variation among examples, not a definitive catalog of every Watersport configuration.
How large is it, and what does the featured dial look like?
The Fratello example was reported as 38 mm in diameter, with three chronograph subdials at 9, 6, and 3 o’clock—a tri-compax layout. Antiquorum’s separate circa-1940 watch was also cataloged at 38 mm. These figures describe specific watches; check the case and proportions of the example you are considering rather than treating one listing as a universal specification.

How is the case assembled, and is a vintage Watersport water resistant?
Van Dorp corrected the original article’s uncertainty about the featured watch’s back: “The back is not snap-on, it is held in place by the four screws in the lugs you mention.” He explained that the inner case assembly—including the back, movement, pushers, and crown—comes out together, and said this construction made the watch water resistant when new. That is the owner’s account of the featured watch’s original design, not evidence of its present condition.
Do not infer that an old example is safe to wear in water. Antiquorum’s listing for a different Watersport said an overhaul was needed and that the auction house did not guarantee function, precision, or water resistance. Before any exposure to water, a qualified watchmaker would need to assess the particular watch and test it; age, prior repairs, seals, and case condition matter.

What strap fits a Cyma Watersport?
A Meticulous Watches listing for a separate Watersport clamshell chronograph specifies a 20 mm strap and a four-screw case. That width is an example, not a family-wide fit specification. Measure the lug gap on the individual watch before ordering, and confirm the strap’s fit and clearance against the case.
What is one Watersport chronograph worth?
One dated result offers a reference point, not a valuation: at its Geneva online auction on April 3, 2025, Antiquorum recorded a sale result of CHF 1,008 for a stainless-steel manual-wind Watersport chronograph cataloged circa 1940, case number 354352, with caliber 400 and 17 jewels. The auction listing recommended an overhaul at the buyer’s expense and disclaimed guarantees of function, precision, and water resistance. What to check when comparing individual examples
- Movement: Record the caliber identified for that watch and ask whether its originality is documented. Watersport listings include Valjoux 72, Valjoux 22, and caliber 400.
- Case and dimensions: Confirm diameter, lug width, case construction, and condition directly. A 38 mm diameter appears in two cited listings, but does not establish every example’s measurements.
- Dial and hands: Compare the subdial arrangement, scales, and visible condition with reliable documentation for the specific watch.
- Service and operation: Ask for service records and a current assessment. A running chronograph is not by itself proof of precision or sound condition.
- Water resistance: Look for a recent test on the actual watch, not a historical design claim or the model name.
