In his September 11, 2024 review, Fratello Watches’ Henry Black spent several weeks with the black-dial Tudor Black Bay 54, reference 79000N, including ocean dives with friends. He liked its tactile controls and compact feel, but found its faux-patina lume less immediately legible underwater than crisp white lume—and sometimes thought the watch felt a little too small. Those are one reviewer’s impressions, not controlled test results or universal fit advice.
Which Black Bay 54 did Henry Black wear?
Black’s review concerns the black-dial 37mm Black Bay 54 on a steel bracelet, reference 79000N / M79000N-0001. It is not the later blue-dial version. Tudor’s original specification sheet describes the black model’s domed dial, domed sapphire crystal and stainless-steel unidirectional bezel. The bracelet has three links and a T-fit clasp; Tudor also offered the model with a rubber strap. Tudor’s original Black Bay 54 specification PDF.
The watch is a compact modern diver on paper, too: Tudor specifies a 37mm steel case, 200m (660ft) water resistance, and the automatic Manufacture Calibre MT5400, which is COSC-certified and has an approximately 70-hour power reserve. These are manufacturer specifications; they do not mean Black conducted a controlled depth or accuracy test. Tudor’s current Black Bay 54 specification page.
How did the 37mm case wear?
Black describes the watch as vintage-like on his approximately six-inch wrists. Its smaller proportions and slim-feeling case gave it a discreet presence, though the compactness was not an unqualified plus for him: at times, he found it a little too small. He wondered whether the thin feel contributed to that reaction. That is a personal fit impression, not evidence of a design defect.

The case’s low-profile feel also shaped how he thought about wearing it around rocks. Black wrote: “I found the bezel easier to operate with wet hands, and the slim case design gave me a sense that I would not scrape this watch on a rock.” This captures his experience rather than a measured comparison of case durability or clearance.
What was it like to use while diving?
Black took the watch free-diving and found the bezel easier to operate with wet hands than the one on his own Black Bay 58. He also found the dial relatively easy to read underwater. These are qualitative comparisons from his dives, not instrumented assessments of grip or visibility.

- Tudor Black Bay Fifty Eight Automatic Chronometer Blue Dial Men's Watch M79030b-0001
His qualification was the lume. He felt the faux-patina color was less immediately legible at a glance in high-contrast underwater conditions than crisp white lume would have been. That preference sits alongside his generally positive report of dial readability: the two observations describe different aspects of legibility, not a claim that the dial was unreadable.
How does the Black Bay 54 compare with the Black Bay 58?
Black’s comparison is to his own blue Black Bay 58 and is experiential, not a specification shootout. The 54 felt smaller on his wrist, and he preferred its bezel operation with wet hands. His lume reservation was also a matter of visual preference and glance-reading underwater. The account does not establish measured differences in bezel force, accuracy, or dive performance between the two models.

The practical choice is therefore about what suits your wrist and use: the 54’s compact presence versus the larger-feeling watch Black was accustomed to, and your own preference for the dial’s lume color and bezel feel. Trying the watch on and handling the bezel is more useful than treating one reviewer’s wrist or grip as a universal fit test.

Tudor introduced a blue-dial Black Bay 54 after the watch in Black’s 2024 review. It retains a 37mm case; Tudor’s current blue bracelet listing gives a thickness of 11.2mm, a 20mm lug width, 200m water resistance and approximately 70 hours of power reserve. Tudor’s 2026 press specification lists 46mm lug-to-lug for the blue version, which is a separate published dimension and should not be attributed to Black’s review sample. The blue model is offered on a three-link bracelet or rubber strap with T-fit clasp. Tudor’s 2026 Black Bay 54 Blue specification PDF.

The later blue variant is relevant if you are choosing a Black Bay 54 today, but it does not change what Black experienced with the black-dial watch. His account is a several-week wear report with ocean-diving experience, not a long-term reliability study. For the full first-person account, see Henry Black’s review at Fratello Watches.
