The 2018 Tissot Heritage Petite Seconde (reference T119.405.16.037) pairs a silvered, vintage-style dial and small-seconds display with a hand-wound ETA 6498-1 movement. Its appeal rests on that period-inspired design and the daily ritual of winding; its main trade-off is a 42mm case that may feel large for a vintage-style dress watch.
What is the Tissot Heritage Petite Seconde?
This is the 2018 Heritage Petite Seconde, reference T119.405.16.037, a modern watch inspired by a 1943 Tissot design. Hodinkee’s launch coverage identifies it as a 42mm version of that earlier watch. It is distinct from Tissot’s Heritage 1938 collection, which the brand presents as a separate, 39mm COSC-certified automatic collection; those specifications do not apply to this model (Tissot Heritage 1938; Hodinkee, 2018).
How does the design and case wear?
Hodinkee reports a 42mm stainless-steel case measuring 11.35mm thick, with a domed silvered dial, printed Arabic numerals and a chapter ring. The seconds sit in a separate subdial, giving the face a distinctly old-fashioned layout. The launch report also lists no lume, 50m water resistance and a leather strap with folding buckle (Hodinkee, 2018).
The diameter is the notable fit compromise. Hodinkee’s reviewer considered the watch large for its vintage style, while also describing it as comfortable. Those are compatible observations: a watch can wear comfortably yet still look broader than someone expects from a traditionally proportioned dress watch. There is no supported wrist-size cutoff; consider the 42mm diameter alongside the watch’s shape and your own preference for a prominent or restrained presence.

What movement does it use, and what does winding involve?
The Heritage Petite Seconde is manually wound, not automatic. Hodinkee’s 2018 launch specifications identify the movement as ETA 6498-1, with hours, minutes and seconds, 17 jewels, a 2.5Hz frequency (18,000 vibrations per hour) and a reported 46-hour power reserve. These are published specifications, not independent measurements of an individual watch’s accuracy or reserve (Hodinkee, 2018).
Manual winding makes the watch’s operation part of its appeal: the owner winds it rather than relying on wrist motion to keep an automatic movement running. If you prefer a watch that winds itself as you wear it, this is the wrong movement type. Powermatic 80 is a separate automatic movement family with up to 80 hours of reserve; it is not the caliber in this Petite Seconde (Tissot Powermatic 80).

Does the dial’s “Antimagnetique” inscription mean modern magnetic protection?
No. The dial carries the word “Antimagnetique,” but Hodinkee’s launch article cautions that the movement’s resistance is not meaningfully antimagnetic by modern standards. Treat the inscription as part of the historical styling, not as a current performance rating or assurance of protection around magnetic devices (Hodinkee, 2018).
Who is this watch best suited to?
- Consider it if you want a vintage-inspired dial with Arabic numerals and a dedicated small-seconds display.
- Consider it if you enjoy hand-winding and the reported 46-hour reserve fits how you use a watch.
- Look elsewhere if you specifically want an automatic movement, luminous markers, or a smaller case.
- Check the exact listing for reference T119.405.16.037 and its variant before buying; a similar collection name or dial inscription does not establish that a listing is for this watch.
