TUDOR Black Bay Bronze Review: Does the 43 mm Watch Show Its Age?

The TUDOR Black Bay Bronze pairs a 43 mm case and vintage cues with a patinating bronze finish. Here are its specifications, strap options and what the “shows its age” criticism can—and cannot—establish.

The Black Bay Bronze is a substantial 43 mm diver built around a bronze case, slate-grey dial and the patina that develops as bronze ages. Those choices give it a distinctive, deliberately vintage character—but they also make its size and styling central to whether it feels compelling or dated. TUDOR’s official specifications establish what the watch is; the phrase “shows its age” comes from Time+Tide’s review headline, not an objective verdict on the brand.

What is the Black Bay Bronze?

TUDOR describes the Black Bay Bronze as a 43 mm divers’ watch inspired by its naval history. The brand says the dial draws on its 1950s divers’ watches and the Snowflake hands on its 1969 catalogue. That is TUDOR’s historical framing of the design, rather than an independent assessment of its originality or appeal. The current US product listings show a slate-grey dial and bronze case for references M79250BA-0001 and M79250BA-0002.

The “brand showing its age” wording is the argument posed by Time+Tide’s headline, “IN-DEPTH: Tudor shows its age with the Black Bay Bronze”. The available description of that review emphasizes the 43 mm size and wrist presence; it is not enough to attribute a fuller argument or conclusion to the reviewer. The headline is best read as a critical prompt: does the watch’s retro design feel purposeful, or does it feel behind the times? That answer depends on the wearer’s taste and how the watch fits.

How large is it, and what are the specifications?

TUDOR lists a 43 mm case, 14.6 mm thickness and 23 mm lug width. Those dimensions point to a watch with a pronounced presence, although wrist shape, strap choice and personal preference affect how it wears. The figures below are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results; TUDOR’s current US product pages were accessed in 2026.

Specification TUDOR listing
Case 43 mm bronze, satin finish; bronze-coloured PVD-treated steel case back
Thickness and lug width 14.6 mm thick; 23 mm lug width
Water resistance 200 m (660 ft)
Bezel Unidirectional, with a 60-minute graduated disc in matt slate-grey anodised aluminium
Crystal Domed sapphire
Movement Manufacture Calibre MT5601, self-winding with bidirectional rotor; COSC-certified
Power reserve Approximately 70 hours
Guarantee TUDOR lists a five-year transferable guarantee, with no registration or periodic maintenance checks required; verify current terms for your market

The 200 m rating and unidirectional bezel make the watch a capable-looking diver on paper, but the listing is not an independent water-resistance test. TUDOR’s 2019 press release for reference 79250BA also gives the movement’s frequency as 28,800 beats per hour (4 Hz) and specifies 25 jewels; those are historical reference details, not a separate current performance test. See the current Black Bay Bronze product listing and 2019 reference 79250BA press release.

What changes between the two strap references?

The two current US listings share the slate-grey dial and core watch specifications. The stated difference is the included strap configuration:

  • Tudor Black Bay Bronze Automatic Men's Watch M79250BA-0001
Reference Listed strap Dial
M79250BA-0001 Black leather strap Slate grey
M79250BA-0002 Fabric strap Slate grey

These are the configurations shown on TUDOR’s current US product pages; confirm the exact reference and included strap with an authorized seller in your market, since lineups can change. The 23 mm lug width is useful when considering alternatives, but width alone does not establish compatibility with every strap: check the reference, fit and attachment details before buying.

Does the bronze case develop patina?

Yes. TUDOR presents patina as a defining characteristic of the bronze case and says it introduced its first bronze model in 2016. The current collection page describes an aluminium-bronze alloy and brushed finishes intended to support even patina development. “Intended” matters: exposure, handling and the individual watch affect how its surface changes, so no particular color, pattern or timeline can be promised. TUDOR’s explanation appears on its Black Bay Bronze collection page.

Patina is part of the ownership proposition, not simply a cosmetic specification. Someone who wants a case that retains a consistent, pristine appearance may find the changing surface less appealing; someone who values visible signs of wear may see it as the point. Hodinkee’s “The Patina Diaries” offers an editorial perspective on living with patina, but it is older coverage, not a controlled long-term test or a prediction of how every Black Bay Bronze will age.

Does it feel dated—or deliberately vintage?

The case size and historical cues make the Black Bay Bronze a specific design choice rather than a neutral, low-profile diver. TUDOR connects its dial and hands to earlier watches, while the patinating bronze makes change part of the look. For one buyer, that combination reads as coherent heritage styling; for another, it may feel oversized or too committed to a vintage aesthetic. The available facts establish the dimensions and design references, not which reaction is correct.

Time+Tide’s headline raises the question of whether the model—and by extension TUDOR’s approach—shows its age. Its review should be consulted directly before assigning the writer more detailed reasoning than the headline and described emphasis on wrist presence support. The watch’s specifications alone cannot settle a question of taste.

What should you weigh before choosing one?

  • Fit: Consider the 43 mm diameter, 14.6 mm thickness and 23 mm lug width together. If possible, try it on; a diameter figure alone cannot predict wrist comfort or presence.
  • Patina: Decide whether you want bronze’s evolving surface. Its eventual appearance varies, and TUDOR does not specify a universal aging schedule.
  • Strap: Choose between the black leather configuration on M79250BA-0001 and the fabric configuration on M79250BA-0002, checking the current listing for your market.
  • Price: TUDOR’s US page listed a suggested retail price of $5,425 when accessed in 2026. This is a market- and date-specific figure, not a global or timeless price; TUDOR says prices and models may change.
  • Evidence: The movement certification, water resistance and power reserve cited here are manufacturer specifications. No independent accuracy testing, current resale values, competitor pricing or marketplace availability are established.

TUDOR’s official product listing is the place to confirm current specifications, reference details and local pricing. Its published guarantee terms should likewise be checked for applicability in the buyer’s market.
