If you can visit Tokyo, an established specialist store is usually the safer choice for a pre-owned watch because you can handle the exact piece, compare its condition with the description, inspect serial and reference details, and obtain written warranty and return terms before paying. Online buying can be equally defensible only when checkout stays inside a marketplace with escrow, a clearly identified professional dealer, an authenticity commitment and a usable return window.
The risk changes sharply when you move from a specialist or protected professional-dealer transaction to an anonymous seller, direct bank transfer or an unknown shopping site. The decision is not simply store versus internet; it is accountable seller and protected payment versus limited evidence and little recourse.

Why an established Tokyo store usually has the safety edge
You see the watch that will be yours
Online photographs cannot reliably show shallow polishing, stretched bracelet links, hairlines between lugs, lume aging, dial refinishing or a replacement bezel. In a shop, ask staff to bring out the exact serial-numbered watch rather than a representative image. View it under bright, neutral light and use a loupe if offered. Ask for the identity and history of the specific piece
- Record the reference and serial numbers and compare them with the paperwork and invoice.
- Ask whether the movement, dial, hands, bezel, bracelet or clasp has been replaced, refinished or serviced.
- Request the available service history, pressure-test information and timekeeping results; if none exists, have that absence written down.
- Confirm exactly which box, papers, tags, spare links and accessories are included.
- Ask whether the watch is being sold as running, serviced, regulated, water-resistant or merely as-is. Those descriptions have different implications.
For a vintage or highly modified watch, originality may matter more than cosmetic perfection. A replacement part is not automatically bad, but it should be disclosed and reflected in the price and warranty.

Its published pre-owned policy includes a one-year warranty, and some online orders can qualify for a free-return service. Those statements describe that company’s terms; they do not automatically apply to another Nakano Broadway seller or to every item, so obtain the written policy for the watch you are buying.

Use the physical visit to resolve fit and comfort
Try the watch on your wrist with the bracelet adjusted as you will wear it. Check lug overhang, clasp position, bracelet articulation and whether a replacement strap or link is needed. A return is much harder after you leave Japan, especially if the item must be insured internationally. Physical fit is therefore a safety and cost advantage, not merely a shopping convenience.

Chrono24 describes a protected flow in which escrow holds your payment around delivery. For purchases from professional dealers, it states a 14-day right of withdrawal and an authenticity commitment. Its published wording says: “Every new and used watch purchased from a professional dealer on Chrono24 is authentic.” Treat that as a platform commitment with conditions, not as permission to skip inspection.
Before paying, verify that the listing identifies the seller as a professional dealer rather than a private seller. Private-seller transactions do not necessarily include the same 14-day withdrawal right. Read the listing-specific terms, confirm the deadline begins when the watch is delivered, and note who pays return shipping and insurance. Keep the conversation, invoice, photographs and payment inside Chrono24. A seller who asks you to move to email, messaging apps or a direct bank transfer is asking you to abandon the protection you selected.

What to do when the Chrono24 package arrives
- Film the unopened parcel, shipping label and any visible damage before breaking the seal.
- Check that the reference, serial, dial, movement, bracelet and accessories match the listing and invoice.
- Compare the watch with every condition statement and photograph. Record discrepancies immediately.
- Do not polish, resize, open or wear the watch extensively until you have decided to keep it; such changes can complicate a withdrawal.
- Report a problem through the platform within its stated process and deadline, using the escrow transaction rather than negotiating an unrecorded refund.
Mercari and other C2C listings require a higher diligence level
Mercari reports 24/7 monitoring and offers an optional Safe Appraisal service for eligible items, in which specialists appraise the item before shipment. Mercari reported that Safe-Appraisal-enabled listings were about 2.4 times higher in the first half of 2025 than in the second half of 2024. That growth indicates wider use of the feature, not a guarantee that every watch is eligible or genuine.
Confirm eligibility, the fee, the exact appraisal outcome and the deadline for opening a dispute before you commit. Safe Appraisal is a platform control; it is not the same as choosing a Tokyo specialist, where you can question staff, handle the watch and receive a store warranty. A C2C seller may be honest and knowledgeable, but you must establish that from the listing, transaction history and documentation rather than assuming dealer-level expertise.
- Ask for current, time-stamped photographs of the dial, case back, clasp, serial area and movement when appropriate.
- Request a clear statement of any aftermarket, replaced or refinished parts.
- Keep all questions and answers in the platform’s message system.
- Pay only through the platform checkout and save the stated inspection and dispute deadline.
- Do not mark the transaction complete until the watch has been examined.
How to spot a fake Japanese shopping site
The Tokyo Metropolitan Police warns that counterfeit goods may arrive, goods may not arrive at all and refunds may not be made. Its guidance, updated September 24, 2026, recommends several checks that are especially important when a site advertises a luxury watch at an extraordinary discount.
- Contact information: look for a complete company name, physical address, telephone number and responsible operator. A contact form alone is not enough.
- Bank-account name: if the beneficiary name does not match the shop or legal operator, stop and investigate.
- Price: an implausibly low price is a fraud signal, not proof of a bargain.
- Japanese wording: unnatural machine-translated text, inconsistent product names and strange legal language deserve caution.
- Payment pressure: urgency, requests for bank transfer or instructions to bypass a platform remove safeguards.
Check the domain and checkout independently rather than trusting a link in an unsolicited message. A polished design, Japanese-language copy or a Tokyo address printed on a page does not establish that the operator is legitimate. If basic company details cannot be verified, do not upload identification or send funds.
A safe buying procedure in Tokyo
- Choose the shop before choosing the watch. Verify the address, legal operator, licence information where applicable and published warranty and return terms.
- Shortlist the exact reference. Compare market listings, but treat an unusually low price as a reason to investigate condition, originality and missing accessories.
- Inspect the exact serial-numbered watch. Examine case, crystal, dial, hands, bezel, bracelet, clasp and movement behavior.
- Reconcile the paperwork. Match serial and reference details to the invoice, warranty card, service records and accessories.
- Ask written questions. Have replacement parts, refinishing, known faults, water-resistance status and service commitments recorded.
- Read return and warranty exclusions. Look specifically for battery, magnetism, water damage, shock, wear, unauthorized opening and international-shipping exclusions.
- Pay through the shop’s documented checkout. Obtain a receipt naming the seller and the exact watch; avoid an unexplained personal bank account.
- Keep evidence. Photograph the watch and documents before leaving, and retain the store’s contact details for any warranty claim.
A safe buying procedure online
- Identify the seller category. On a marketplace, determine whether the account is a professional dealer, private seller or an intermediary.
- Select protection before price. Confirm escrow, authenticity terms, return period, dispute deadline and who pays insured shipping.
- Verify the listing. Require photos of the exact watch and ask about service, originality, serial/reference details and included accessories.
- Keep the transaction on-platform. Use the marketplace messages and checkout; never accept a discount for leaving the protected flow.
- Document delivery. Photograph packaging and the watch immediately, then compare every element with the listing.
- Decide within the stated window. Do not resize, polish, open or send the watch to a third-party service until you are satisfied or have reported a problem.
- Escalate through the platform. If the watch is counterfeit, materially misdescribed or damaged, submit evidence before the deadline and follow the platform’s shipping instructions.
Returns, warranties and the cost of being wrong
A return right and a warranty solve different problems. A return or withdrawal window lets you reject a watch because it does not meet your expectations, subject to the seller’s conditions. A warranty addresses specified defects after acceptance and commonly excludes wear, accidental damage, water intrusion, batteries or work performed by another watchmaker. Ask for both documents.

Insured shipping, customs declarations, import tax treatment, currency conversion and language support can turn a nominally free return into a substantial loss. Confirm whether the seller refunds original shipping, whether you must prepay return postage, and how the carrier value is declared. Never under-insure a valuable watch to reduce postage.
After-sales location also matters. A local Tokyo shop may accept a warranty watch at its counter, while an online dealer may require international shipment to a service center. Ask who approves the repair, how long assessment takes and whether servicing by an independent watchmaker voids coverage.
Which option fits common buyer situations?
You are in Tokyo and buying a high-value modern watch
Start with an established specialist. The ability to compare several examples, inspect the exact watch and negotiate documentation usually outweighs the convenience of ordering online. Use the online listing only as a research reference unless its protections are unusually clear.
You are buying a vintage or heavily modified watch
Prioritize an expert who will explain originality and replacement parts face to face. Ask for movement photographs and a service assessment. A platform authenticity promise cannot tell you whether a vintage watch is valuable because it is original, or merely genuine but extensively altered.

Use a professional dealer on a protected marketplace, with escrow, a documented authenticity commitment and a clearly stated return period. Obtain photographs and written answers before payment, and budget for insured international shipping and possible return costs.
You are considering a C2C bargain
Proceed only when the platform’s appraisal or buyer-protection process applies to that exact listing. Keep payment and messages on-platform, verify the seller’s evidence and act before the dispute deadline. A bargain that requires direct transfer is not a protected bargain.
The decision rule
Choose a Tokyo specialist when you can inspect the watch and the shop provides clear written warranty and return terms. Choose online when the seller is a professional dealer or the platform supplies explicit escrow, authenticity and return protection. Walk away from an unknown site, an implausibly low price, incomplete contact details, pressure to pay by bank transfer or any request to move off-platform.
Japan’s Consumer Affairs Agency listed 10 marketplace operators as signatories to the Japanese Product Safety Pledge on a September 2026 page. That kind of industry initiative can indicate platform-level safety work, but it does not replace checking the individual seller, listing and transaction terms. Your safest purchase is the one for which the watch, seller, payment path and remedy are all documented before money changes hands.
