This is a historical reconstruction, not a current app recommendation. On May 12, 2016, Android Headlines published a monthly roundup of ten Android Wear apps and watch faces. The list captured the platform before Android Wear 2.0, when watches commonly relied heavily on a paired Android phone. Its “Top 10” label described a curated editorial selection—not a measured ranking with published scoring criteria.
The original article does not establish which of these apps remain available, supported, secure, compatible with modern Wear OS, or sold at their original prices. Treat the descriptions and prices below as historical claims from the 2016 article, not as installation advice for 2026.

The most practical utilities
Wear Black when Charging
This was a narrowly targeted solution to a familiar early-smartwatch annoyance: an unwanted charging display on a nightstand. The article describes the app as reducing or removing the charging animation while retaining a time display when the screen is tapped, and presents it as free in May 2016.

Its usefulness depended heavily on the individual watch. Charging animations, ambient mode, screen wake behavior, and manufacturer software were not identical across Android Wear hardware. It was therefore a watch-specific convenience, not a universal fix for every charging screen. The historical concept remains recognizable—quiet, glanceable charging information—but the original app’s current operation cannot be assumed.
Wear Where’s My Car
Wear Where’s My Car used the phone’s GPS to save the location where the user parked. Its appeal was control: the user could deliberately mark the car rather than rely on the historical behavior of Google Now’s automatic parking-location feature.
A watch was a sensible control surface for this task because saving a location should take only a brief interaction. The weak points were equally practical: GPS can be inaccurate indoors or underground, the phone may be disconnected, the user may forget to activate the app, and location services can affect battery life. The original article favorably contrasted its focused workflow with Google Now, but it did not provide accuracy testing. That comparison should be understood as a 2016-era observation, not a statement about current Google features.
Pulse Play for Racket Players
Pulse Play targeted tennis and squash players, allowing them to track scores and interact with a related social service. The wrist was potentially useful during play because checking a score could be less disruptive than handling a phone.
That advantage came with obvious edge cases. Touch controls can be difficult with sweaty hands, accidental taps are possible, and a player may not want to manage connectivity or social features mid-match. The original roundup described the concept positively but did not independently test its reliability during real matches. It is best understood as a specialized example of a watch doing a small, hands-busy task—not as proof that the app worked reliably for every player.
Smart-home and device-control picks
Hue Wear
Hue Wear brought Philips Hue controls to the wrist, including light color and brightness. For someone already using Hue lighting, a watch could be a convenient way to make a quick adjustment without finding a phone.

With an IP68 rating, it's resistant to sweat, rain, and handwashing (Not for swimming or hot showers)
- All-Day Health Monitoring: Android smart watch is equipped with a high-precision optical sensor that supports 24h real-time heart rate monitoring, helping you stay informed about your physical condition. It also intelligently analyzes sleep quality, accurately identifying deep sleep, light sleep, and awake phases to help improve your sleep habits. Paired with its dedicated app, you can view long-term health trends and receive personalized insights to gradually develop a healthier lifestyle
This was never a general smart-lighting app. Its usefulness depended on Philips Hue hardware and the period’s required bridge, phone, account, network, or cloud configuration. A watch command could fail if the phone, bridge, Wi-Fi network, or supporting service was unavailable. The idea—quick lighting controls from a wearable—has durable appeal, but the original listing does not establish present-day support or compatibility.
Smart TV Remote & Wear Support
This selection extended remote-style controls to compatible Samsung televisions. The article identifies channel, input, and volume functions as examples of what could be controlled from the phone and Android Wear watch.
The benefit was convenience when the physical remote was missing. The trade-off was strong compatibility dependence: this was aimed at Samsung TV owners, not all smart TVs, and operation could also depend on the particular television model, phone, network discovery, and app support. A watch remote is useful for basic commands, but it should not be treated as a full replacement for a dedicated remote without evidence that every required function worked.
The watch-face selections
Sheet Music Watch Face
Sheet Music Watch Face used musical notation as its visual theme. The article regarded the design as classy while questioning whether its apparent price was justified by such a simple display.
Its appeal was primarily expressive rather than functional. Sheet music can be visually attractive, but a small watch screen is not an ideal substitute for a dedicated music display or printed score. This was a style choice for musicians and music enthusiasts, not a practical tool for reading a complete part.
NEXO Watch Face
NEXO offered a classic-looking design with color and customizable settings. It represented the more conventional side of the list: a face intended to remain readable while giving the wearer control over its appearance and information.
Rank #3
- 【Crystal-Clear Bluetooth Calls & Message Notification】 AEAC smart watch with Bluetooth 5.3 and a built-in DSP chip, enjoy ultra-clear call quality and zero lag. Stay connected on the go with real-time SMS and app notifications (Not supporting reply messages)—all from your wrist.
- 【1.85" HD Display with 60Hz Refresh Rate】Experience crisp visuals and smooth scrolling on the vibrant 1.85" HD touchscreen. Plus, you can also upload photos of your family, pets, and scenery to customize a watch face with your own style.
- 【24/7 Health Monitoring】Track your health around the clock with advanced sensors. Monitor heart rate, sleep stages, stress levels, and more, helping you make informed choices for a healthier lifestyle.
- 【Fitness Tracking with 100+ Modes】Elevate your workouts with over 100 sport modes, including running, swimming, yoga, and more. The IP68 waterproof design ensures it’s ready for your toughest adventures, from the gym to the pool.
- 【Seamless Compatibility & Long Battery Life】AEAC smart watch works effortlessly with iOS and Android smartphones. Enjoy up to 7 days of battery life on a single charge, so you never have to worry about recharging.
Customization always involves trade-offs. More data, brighter colors, or a busier layout can make quick reading harder and may affect battery use depending on the watch’s display and settings. The original article did not include battery measurements or accessibility testing, so its positive design assessment should remain attributed to that article.
Watch Face: Minimal
Watch Face: Minimal took a deliberately unconventional approach to displaying the time. It was for users who wanted an alternative to familiar analog or digital layouts and valued visual distinctiveness over a traditional information hierarchy.
The wrist advantage was immediate time checking, but minimalist design can sacrifice date, battery, notifications, contrast, or conventional readability. Whether that is a flaw depends on the wearer’s priorities. The 2016 description supports calling it a design experiment; it does not support broader claims about accessibility or usability.

Satellites Watch Face placed a selectable planet at the center while satellites orbited around it. Of the ten selections, this was among the clearest examples of the watch as a visual novelty platform.
The orbiting animation could make the face memorable, but animation may also distract from the time, reduce clarity, or consume more power. It was a thematic face rather than a productivity tool, and the original roundup did not document battery behavior.
PhraseWatch
PhraseWatch combined the time and date with a daily phrase in a selected language. That made it more than decoration: the face attempted to turn repeated glances at the watch into lightweight language exposure.
Rank #4
- WHY GALAXY WATCH8: Advanced health and sleep tracking features.* A lighter, more snug design for all day comfort.* Improved user interface.* Personal AI assistant for hands free help.⁴* 2-Year Warranty.
- SLEEP SMARTER. LIVE BETTER: Energize your days with a great night’s rest using Advanced Sleep Coaching¹ - improved with even more ways to keep your nights on track. Plus, Bedtime Guidance² helps you find your optimal bedtime.
- YOUR RUN, YOUR COACH: Step up your running routine with a Running Coach³ that analyzes your performance and gives you real-time feedback. Training for an event? Try specific programs built for 5Ks, marathons and more.
- NEW DESIGN. LIGHTWEIGHT FEEL: Maximize your days with a minimalist design. The sleek, thinner-than-ever silhouette makes Galaxy Watch8 look as good as it functions. With a snug fit and sporty style, it gives you readings without getting in your way.
- A PERSONAL ASSISTANT, RIGHT ON YOUR WRIST: Your Watch just became your personal assistant.⁴ Stay one step ahead of your day with a watch that helps you navigate your tasks and to-do lists.
Its limits are important. One phrase per day is a motivational supplement, not a complete language-learning method. The value would depend on language coverage, translation quality, repetition, and whether the wearer actually noticed and remembered the phrases. The underlying idea—using a watch face for small, repeated learning prompts—remains more durable than any assumption that this particular 2016 app is still available.
Was this really a ranked “top 10”?
Not in the rigorous sense. Android Headlines’ article was a monthly editorial roundup by Tom Dawson, published on May 12, 2016. It did not disclose a scoring system, testing protocol, ranking criteria, review-score analysis, or formal comparison between entries. It also mixed practical utilities, smart-home controls, sports software, educational concepts, and decorative watch faces.
“Top 10” is therefore best read as “ten featured picks.” The list is useful as a snapshot of what developers were attempting on Android Wear, but it should not be presented as proof that these were objectively the ten best products available at the time.

Using wrist appropriateness, dependency risk, and practical usefulness—not a published test—the selections can be understood this way:
- Most practical for the right user: Wear Where’s My Car or Hue Wear. The first solved a focused parking task; the second offered quick controls to people already invested in Philips Hue.
- Most specialized: Smart TV Remote & Wear Support and Pulse Play. Each addressed a real use case, but only for users with the necessary television or sport.
- Most narrowly focused: Wear Black when Charging. It addressed one small charging annoyance and depended strongly on watch behavior.
- Most distinctive educational idea: PhraseWatch, which used a watch face for recurring language exposure.
- Most novel: Satellites Watch Face, whose main appeal was its animated space-themed design.
These are editorial judgments based on the functions described in the original roundup, not measured performance results.

The individual 2016 apps should not be confused with current Wear OS software. Android Wear was the pre-Android Wear 2.0 platform, and old apps may have depended on APIs, companion-app behavior, phone requirements, and Play Store listings that no longer exist. Android Wear and modern Wear OS are related but should not be treated as interchangeable platforms.

Sedentary reminders help you stay moving during long workdays. It’s the kind of smart convenience that simplifies your day, right from your wrist
The underlying use cases, however, remain recognizable:
- Parking capture: A watch can still be a convenient place to trigger a simple location-saving action, provided the current app and phone support it.
- Smart-home controls: Wrist-based light controls make sense for quick changes, but they remain dependent on the chosen ecosystem and network.
- Sports scoring: A glanceable score interface can be useful when handling a phone is inconvenient, though touch reliability matters.
- Glanceable information: The best watch functions are short, readable, and quick to complete.
- Custom watch faces: Style, animation, complications, and readability continue to compete for the watch’s limited screen and battery.
- Learning prompts: Repeated small reminders can encourage practice, but a watch face alone is not a full educational system.
Availability and compatibility warning
The source article is from 2016. Its historical price statements should be preserved only as historical context: Wear Black when Charging was described as free, while Sheet Music Watch Face was described as potentially expensive for its simplicity. The dossier does not establish current prices for any of the ten selections.
Before attempting to install any old Android Wear software, a reader would need to verify a current official listing, supported phone and watch versions, developer support, permissions, account requirements, and whether the package still receives updates. An old mention, APK mirror, or archived listing is not evidence that an app remains safe, supported, or functional. No current availability claim can responsibly be made from the 2016 roundup alone.

Bottom line
Android Headlines’ May 2016 list shows how early Android Wear developers explored the wrist: some apps solved small but genuine problems, while others treated the watch primarily as a visual, thematic, or experimental surface. Wear Where’s My Car, Hue Wear, and Pulse Play made the strongest case for quick wrist interactions, but each had dependencies. The watch faces demonstrated the platform’s design variety, from classic customization to orbiting planets and daily language prompts.
