The best smartwatch brand in 2025 depends first on your phone. Apple is the safest all-round choice for iPhone owners, Garmin is strongest for serious fitness and long battery life, Samsung leads mainstream Android smartwatches, Google’s Pixel Watch offers the cleanest Google experience, and Fitbit remains a good fit for simple health and sleep tracking.
This is an editorial shortlist, not a claim that any brand is fault-free. “Trust” here means a combination of reliability evidence, useful software support, phone compatibility, health-and-fitness performance, support and repair considerations, privacy and subscription transparency, and reasonable long-term value.

How we define a smartwatch brand you can trust
A highly rated watch is not proof that every product from its manufacturer is dependable. Brand-level trust requires looking beyond a single review or feature list.

Which?’s smartwatch reliability research surveyed owners of Apple, Fitbit, Garmin, Samsung and other brands and examined faults, time to failure and effects on daily use. It is useful evidence for the reliability question, but it does not establish a universal ranking for every model or market. See Which?’s reliability research.
Independent testing also supports a use-case approach. The Independent evaluated performance, fitness, sleep, comfort, calls, notifications and heart-rate consistency against a chest strap before assigning different watches to different categories. Read the Independent’s tested smartwatch guide.
1. Apple
Best for: iPhone owners who want the best all-round smartwatch
Apple Watch is the most dependable default recommendation for someone already invested in the iPhone ecosystem. The Series 10 was selected as the best Apple smartwatch in the Independent’s 2025 testing, which covered everyday performance, fitness, sleep, comfort, calls, notifications and heart-rate consistency.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIts advantage is not one isolated sensor. Apple combines polished iPhone integration, notifications, calls, messages, Apple Health, payments, safety features, a large third-party app ecosystem and a wide accessory market. The range also gives buyers distinct choices: the lower-cost SE, mainstream Series models and rugged Ultra models.
Consider: Apple Watch SE, Series 10 and Ultra 2 for the 2025 buying context. Check the current model page for availability and regional specifications at Apple’s official Watch site.
Why trust Apple?
- Excellent integration with iPhone notifications, calls, messages and health data.
- More mature app and smartwatch functionality than most fitness-first competitors.
- Strong safety features on supported models and in supported regions.
- Extensive independent testing and broad accessory availability.
Limitations
Apple Watch is not a sensible Android purchase. Battery life is also much shorter than Garmin’s, particularly when GPS, LTE, an always-on display or frequent workouts are involved. Cellular models require a compatible carrier plan, adding recurring cost.
ECG, irregular-rhythm, blood-oxygen, sleep and other health functions vary by model, country and software version. They should not be treated as diagnoses. Tom’s Guide reached a similar conditional conclusion in its Apple-versus-Garmin comparison: Apple was stronger for smart and health features, while Garmin led for fitness tools and battery life. See the comparison.
Buy Apple if: you use an iPhone and prioritize apps, calls, payments, safety and software polish.
Skip Apple if: you use Android or strongly dislike charging every day.
2. Garmin
Best for: runners, athletes, hikers and long battery life
Garmin is the strongest choice when a smartwatch’s primary job is training. The Forerunner 265 was selected as the Independent’s best running watch, while the Venu 3 was chosen as its best everyday Garmin smartwatch.
Depending on the model, Garmin offers detailed running, cycling, swimming, hiking, multisport and recovery tools, including training load, recovery, VO2 max, heart-rate variability and readiness-related metrics. Physical buttons on many models are useful in rain or during hard workouts, and the range extends from affordable running watches to premium outdoor devices. Some models add solar charging and more rugged construction.

- Wheelchair mode tracks pushes — rather than steps — and includes push and handcycle activities with preloaded workouts for strength, cardio, HIIT, Pilates and yoga, challenges specific to wheelchair users and more (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
Consider: Forerunner 265 for running, Venu 3 for a lifestyle-oriented Garmin, Instinct 3 for rugged outdoor use and Fenix 8 for premium multisport and adventure features. Browse Garmin’s official smartwatch catalog.
Why trust Garmin?
- Deep training and outdoor tools across a broad model range.
- Much longer battery life than app-focused Apple, Samsung and Pixel watches.
- Broad iPhone and Android compatibility.
- Physical controls and durable designs on many models.
Limitations
Garmin’s app ecosystem, voice-assistant functions, calls and general smartwatch features trail Apple and Wear OS. Feature differences between models are substantial: an inexpensive Garmin may be excellent for running but weak for payments, music or calls.
Never read a headline battery rating as a guarantee. GPS mode, music playback, LTE or satellite functions, display type, notifications and settings can reduce endurance significantly. Garmin’s advanced metrics can also be overwhelming if you only want basic activity tracking.
Buy Garmin if: you train regularly, participate in endurance sports, hike outdoors or want to avoid nightly charging.

3. Samsung
Best for: Samsung Galaxy owners and mainstream Android users
Samsung offers the strongest mainstream Wear OS experience, particularly when paired with a Galaxy phone. The Galaxy Watch 7 was selected as the best Samsung smartwatch in the Independent’s 2025 guide.
Galaxy Watch combines notifications, calls, payments, maps, music, Google apps, Samsung Health and a wide Wear OS application ecosystem. Multiple sizes and styles make it easier to find a comfortable fit, while health and fitness features are more comprehensive than those on many basic trackers.
Consider: Galaxy Watch 7 for the mainstream range and Galaxy Watch Ultra for a larger, more rugged option in the 2025 context. Check compatibility and current models at Samsung’s U.S. smartwatch catalog.

Why trust Samsung?
- Strong integration with Galaxy phones and Samsung Health.
- Good calls, notifications, payments, maps, music and app support.
- Competitive health and fitness features.
- More complete smartwatch functionality than most fitness-first watches.
Limitations
Some health functions may require a Samsung Galaxy phone, and feature availability can vary by country and model. LTE activation depends on carrier compatibility and a recurring plan. Battery life is generally below Garmin’s, and frequent annual refreshes can make older watches appear obsolete even when their core functions remain usable.
Buy Samsung if: you own a Galaxy phone or want a full-featured Android watch with Google services.
Skip Samsung if: you use an iPhone or want the longest possible battery life.

4. Google Pixel Watch
Best for: Android users who prefer Google’s software
Pixel Watch is the cleanest Google-native smartwatch choice. The Pixel Watch 3 was selected as the best Pixel smartwatch in the Independent’s 2025 guide, combining fitness information with calls, notifications, directions and assistance.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Its strengths are tight Android integration, Google apps, a compact and polished design, useful safety functions and Fitbit’s health-and-fitness platform. It is especially appealing to Pixel owners and to Android users who want a traditional smartwatch rather than a simple tracker.
Consider: Pixel Watch 3 for the 2025 buying context. Current products, trade-in, repair and protection information are available through Google’s official watches and trackers catalog.
Limitations
Pixel Watch is Android-only and does not match Garmin for battery endurance. The most useful Fitbit coaching and advanced insights may require a paid subscription. Features can also depend on the phone, country, Google account, software version and exact model. Pixel Watch and Fitbit overlap, so compare the desired functions rather than assuming the newer-looking product is automatically better.
Buy Pixel Watch if: you want Google apps, polished Android notifications and Fitbit health insights.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Fitbit
Best for: simple health, sleep and activity tracking
Fitbit is a sensible choice for buyers who care primarily about steps, sleep, heart rate, activity and approachable insights. The Sense 2 was selected by the Independent for stress tracking, while its guide described Fitbit as particularly suitable for users focused on general health rather than a full app-rich smartwatch.
The Charge 6 illustrates Fitbit’s appeal: it offers built-in GPS, exercise modes, heart-rate tracking, sleep tracking, Google Maps and Google Wallet on compatible devices, with an official battery claim of up to seven days under stated conditions. Compatibility and feature qualifications are listed on Google’s Charge 6 product page.
Why trust Fitbit?
- Comfortable, relatively unobtrusive trackers.
- Accessible health and activity app experience.
- Established sleep, steps and wellness tracking platform.
- Options that generally cost less upfront than full smartwatches.
Limitations
Fitbit trackers are not substitutes for Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch or Pixel Watch if you need extensive apps, calls, maps or advanced training controls. Readiness, coaching, stress and trend features may require Fitbit Premium or another Google health subscription, depending on the product and current plan. Google’s consolidation of Fitbit and Pixel also makes long-term product positioning less clear than it is for Garmin or Apple.
Recommended Free Tools
Fitbit health metrics are wellness information, not clinical diagnoses. A lower-cost tracker can also become less economical if the insights you actually want are locked behind a recurring fee.
Buy Fitbit if: you want comfort, simple tracking and accessible sleep or activity insights.

Skip Fitbit if: you need serious marathon, multisport or smartwatch-app capabilities.
Choose by phone ecosystem
iPhone
Choose Apple Watch for the most complete integration. Garmin and many Fitbit devices can also work with iPhone, but Apple remains the natural choice for calls, messages, Apple Health and third-party apps. Verify the exact model before buying a non-Apple watch.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Samsung Galaxy
Choose Samsung Galaxy Watch for the deepest phone integration. Garmin and Fitbit are better if battery life or simplicity matters more than Samsung-specific health and software features.
Pixel or other Android phone
Choose Pixel Watch for Google’s software, or Samsung for broader mainstream smartwatch functionality. Garmin is the safer cross-platform choice for fitness, while Fitbit is the simpler option.
Cross-platform fitness
Choose Garmin if training data and battery life matter most. Choose Fitbit if you mainly want steps, sleep and general wellness.
“Works with Android” is not enough. Pairing may not provide ECG, blood-pressure tools, cellular activation, full messaging, automatic synchronization or every emergency feature. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility page for the precise phone, operating-system version, carrier and region.
Choose by use case
- Best overall: Apple for iPhone; Samsung or Pixel Watch for Android.
- Best running and training: Garmin Forerunner 265 or another model selected for your sport.
- Best battery life: Garmin, subject to the model and settings.
- Best simple health tracking: Fitbit.
- Best apps, calls and notifications: Apple Watch or a Wear OS watch.
- Best outdoor durability: Garmin, or rugged Apple and Samsung models where their ecosystem fits.
- Best lower-cost route: Fitbit or a previous-generation Apple or Samsung model, provided it still receives the support you need.
What a smartwatch really costs over two to four years
Compare more than the checkout price. Include the watch, an LTE plan if needed, subscriptions, replacement bands, proprietary chargers, warranty coverage and the likely cost of a battery or screen problem. Also count the inconvenience of charging: a watch that technically lasts seven days may last far less with continuous GPS, an always-on display or heavy notifications.
Subscriptions are particularly important for Fitbit and Pixel Watch buyers. Establish which steps, sleep data and basic workouts remain free, which advanced insights require a plan and whether a trial converts automatically. For Apple and Samsung, separate the device price from cellular service and accessories.
Alternatives worth considering
OnePlus is an appealing Android alternative when price and battery life matter; the Independent selected the OnePlus Watch 3 as its best budget smartwatch in its 2025 guide. Amazfit offers aggressive pricing and many battery-life options, and Consumer Reports included it among brands with well-performing products. Both have a less established long-term wearable track record than the five brands above.
COROS, Polar and Suunto deserve attention from serious athletes who want specialized training or outdoor tools. Withings is worth considering for traditional watch styling and health tracking, but it generally offers fewer smartwatch and training functions. Huawei can be attractive for design and battery life, but U.S. availability, payment support and app compatibility make it a less practical general recommendation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Common buying and ownership mistakes
- Buying a watch designed for a different phone ecosystem.
- Assuming every health feature works in every country or on every phone.
- Reading a manufacturer’s battery rating as if it included continuous GPS or LTE.
- Confusing water resistance with suitability for diving.
- Expecting a basic tracker to replace a dedicated running watch.
- Ignoring case thickness, weight, proprietary chargers and replacement-band costs.
- Assuming a health score is a medical result.
- Forgetting that subscription features may become less useful after a trial ends.
If something stops working
- Confirm the exact model, phone and operating-system compatibility.
- Update the watch, phone and companion app.
- Check Bluetooth, notifications, location, health permissions and background-data settings.
- Restart both devices, then resync the account.
- Wear the watch snugly, clean the sensors and select the correct workout mode.
- For serious heart-rate accuracy needs, compare the watch with a chest strap rather than assuming the watch is correct.
- Contact the manufacturer before treating a software problem as hardware failure, and retain proof of purchase for warranty support.
Do not rely on a smartwatch as your sole emergency, safety or medical system. Seek clinical advice for symptoms or decisions involving treatment.
Bottom line
There is no universally trustworthy smartwatch brand independent of the buyer’s phone and priorities. Buy Apple for an iPhone, Samsung or Pixel Watch for a full Android smartwatch, Garmin for training and battery life, and Fitbit for simple, comfortable health tracking. The right choice is the brand whose limitations you can live with for the next several years.
