The Tudor Black Bay P01 is a 2019 production diver inspired by a late-1960s prototype proposed to the U.S. Navy—not a Navy-issued watch itself. Its signature feature is a movable end-link at 12 o’clock that stops the bidirectional bezel. Tudor paired that unconventional design with a 42 mm steel case, 200 m water resistance and a COSC-certified movement. The result is a capable modern specification wrapped in a shape that reviewers found polarizing.
What is the Black Bay P01 based on?
According to Tudor’s 2019 press release, the company began developing a technical watch for the U.S. Navy in 1967 as a proposed replacement for the Oyster Prince Submariner reference 7928. Tudor says the project did not enter production and that reference 7016 was ultimately adopted by the Navy. The P01 is a separate, modern production watch inspired by a prototype from that study, which Tudor says remained in its archives. Tudor’s historical account is the source for these details; they should not be read as independent confirmation of the procurement history.

The name P01 stands for “prototype 1.” Tudor described the 2019 watch as bringing the prototype’s distinctive aesthetic into mass production roughly 50 years later. That lineage explains the P01’s unusual design, but it does not make the production model the original Navy proposal.
How does the P01 bezel stop work?
The bezel is bidirectional and has 60 notches with a 12-hour graduation. Its stop system is operated by the movable end-link at 12 o’clock: the end-link can be positioned to stop the bezel from rotating. This is the watch’s defining functional detail, as well as its most visually conspicuous one.

Tudor says the historical prototype’s hinged end-link concept was the subject of a 1968 patent for a bezel-locking and disassembly system intended to help with maintenance. The modern watch does not literally reproduce that mechanism. Tudor’s product description says it “borrows liberally” from the earlier idea, using the mobile end-link to provide a bezel stop. Tudor’s product release describes the production system; SJX’s historical report gives the patent timeline as a July 1968 filing and a 1970 grant for Swiss patent 490706.

Why is the Tudor Black Bay P01 controversial?
The P01 looks unlike the more familiar Black Bay diver formula. Its 42 mm case, long-looking end-link arrangement and bezel-stop hardware give it a distinctive tool-watch appearance. The mechanism has a clear purpose, but it also makes the design harder to read as a conventional dive watch; someone drawn to restrained, traditional styling may find the same detail awkward that another buyer finds memorable.
Hodinkee described the P01 as polarizing and connected that response to its unusual locking bezel and departure from expected Black Bay shapes. SJX called it peculiar and questioned the practicality of its long case for discreet wear. These are individual reviewer assessments, not evidence of a measured consensus among owners or buyers. Hodinkee’s hands-on account also described the 42 mm case as wearing tall, while feeling less wide than its diameter suggested to that reviewer; fit impressions will vary by wrist.

Is the Tudor Black Bay P01 a real Navy watch?
No: the 2019 Black Bay P01 is a production watch inspired by a prototype Tudor says it developed as part of a proposed Navy-watch project. Tudor’s account says the project did not reach production and that reference 7016 was ultimately adopted instead. The P01 should therefore be understood as a modern interpretation of an archival prototype, not as the historical Navy-issued watch.
Who is the P01 for?
The P01 makes the most sense for someone who values its unusual bezel mechanism and prototype story more than conventional Black Bay styling. Before choosing it, consider how a 42 mm case with a distinctive end-link profile will sit on your wrist, whether you like the visible bezel-stop hardware, and whether the history adds meaningful appeal. A buyer seeking the familiar proportions and look of a conventional Black Bay diver may prefer that format; the P01 is the more characterful, less discreet choice.
