The 2016 Tudor Heritage Black Bay 36 is a compact, time-only steel watch that borrows the Black Bay’s snowflake hands and bold luminous markers but leaves off its signature rotating dive bezel. That mix makes it unusually versatile—and raises the question at the heart of Felix Scholz’s review: does a watch with Black Bay styling and a fixed bezel really belong in the Black Bay family?
What the 2016 Heritage Black Bay 36 is
This review concerns the original Heritage Black Bay 36 covered by Time+Tide in 2016, not the current Black Bay One 36. The Heritage model pairs a 36 mm polished steel case with a fixed polished bezel and a time-only display. Scholz describes it as a traditional, compact watch rather than a smaller dive watch.
The distinction matters when comparing specifications, movements, bracelets, or prices: Tudor’s present-day Black Bay One 36 is a separate generation, not a simple update of the watch Scholz reviewed.
Does the Black Bay 36 work as an everyday watch?
Compact proportions and wrist presence
The 36 mm case is the watch’s clearest practical strength. Scholz saw its traditional size as a welcome alternative to larger watches that can dominate the wrist. The fixed polished bezel and steel case give it a restrained outline, while the dial keeps the more assertive look associated with the Black Bay.

- Tudor Black Bay 36 Automatic Chronometer Light Champagne Dial Unisex Watch M79640-0003
Black Bay dial, classic case
The snowflake hands and oversized luminous markers make the watch recognizably Black Bay. In the smaller case, however, Scholz felt that the dial furniture could look too large and exposed. His specific design change would have been a slightly smaller hour hand and markers. Whether that feels like character or imbalance is a matter of taste, but it is the most noticeable tension in the watch’s proportions.
Fixed bezel, not a dive bezel
The bezel is fixed, so it cannot be used to track elapsed dive time. Time+Tide’s 2016 review gives the Heritage model 150 m water resistance and contrasts it with 200 m for the larger conventional Black Bays of that period. Scholz is explicit that the BB 36 is not a dive watch: water resistance alone does not give it the rotating timing bezel that defines the dive-oriented models.

- Tudor Black Bay 36 Automatic Chronometer Blue Dial Unisex Watch M79640-0002
Those figures describe the 2016 Heritage watch and its contemporaries, not Tudor’s current Black Bay One 36. For the Heritage model, think of the water-resistance rating as a specification, not a reason to treat it as a purpose-built dive instrument.
Movement and strap options
Movement
Time+Tide identifies the 2016 watch’s movement as an ETA 2824 base modified by Tudor. It is not the later MT5400 calibre used in the current Black Bay One 36.

- 41mm steel case with polished and satin finish
- Bidirectional rotatable bezel in steel with 24-hour graduated anodised aluminium disc
- Self-winding mechanical movement with 70 hour power reserve
Three looks from the documented configurations
The review presents the watch on an Oyster-style bracelet with curved end pieces, aged leather, and a monochrome camouflage woven strap. The different configurations change its character: the bracelet reads as a straightforward steel everyday watch, leather gives it a more traditional feel, and camouflage fabric makes the dial and case seem more casual. That adaptability is a central part of Scholz’s favorable assessment.
The review does not establish a universal aftermarket strap-fit specification for the Heritage reference. Check the exact watch reference and lug measurements before buying a replacement strap; the current model’s stated dimensions should not be assumed to apply.

How the Heritage model differs from the current Black Bay One 36
Tudor’s current Black Bay One 36 listing is for reference M79640-0004. The table separates the two generations so that current specifications are not mistaken for the 2016 Heritage watch.

- Tudor Black Bay 39 Automatic Chronometer Blue Dial Unisex Watch M79660-0002
Tudor’s current Black Bay 31/36/39/41 press material says the family has 100 m water resistance and describes the T-fit adjustment and an approximately ten-year service recommendation, depending on model and daily use. Those are manufacturer statements about the modern family; they should not be read as specifications or service guidance for the older Heritage watch.

Why it appeals
- The 36 mm case offers a compact, traditional alternative to larger sports watches.
- Black Bay hands and markers give it a distinctive face without requiring the visual bulk of a dive bezel.
- Bracelet, leather, and woven fabric configurations let the same watch move between more formal and more casual looks.
- Its identity as a steel time-only watch makes more sense if your priority is an adaptable daily watch rather than a dive instrument.
Why it may not
- The prominent hands and markers can feel oversized against the smaller case.
- The fixed bezel removes a defining Black Bay dive-watch feature, making the family name feel debatable.
- Its 150 m rating does not change the reviewer’s point that it lacks a rotating dive-time bezel.
Scholz’s reservation is about design identity, not everyday performance. He calls the watch outstanding, yet questions whether a Black Bay dial in a classic fixed-bezel case belongs under that name. If you judge it on its own as a versatile compact steel watch, that taxonomy matters less; if you want the visual and functional formula of a conventional Black Bay diver, it matters more.
Is the 2016 Tudor Heritage Black Bay 36 still worth considering?
It is worth considering if you want a compact mechanical everyday watch, like the Black Bay dial, and do not need a rotating dive bezel. Its strongest case is the contrast between restrained proportions and a bold dial, along with the ability to alter its look with different documented straps.
It is a less natural choice if you want a true dive-style Black Bay, or if the oversized markers and hands look out of scale to you. When shopping, confirm that a listing is for the Heritage model rather than the current Black Bay One 36, and compare the precise reference, condition, included bracelet or straps, and local market price. The 2016 launch prices are useful historical context, not a guide to present-day availability or resale value.
