Choose by design, configuration, price and fit—not by assuming one is proven more accurate. The Ranger has a stated 100m water-resistance rating; the Spirit Pilot is rated to 10 bar. Those are manufacturer ratings, not guarantees for a particular activity.

Movement: similar stated reserve, no proven accuracy winner
TUDOR specifies its Manufacture Calibre MT5402 for the cited Ranger reference, with COSC certification and approximately 70 hours of power reserve. Longines lists an automatic movement with a monocrystalline silicon balance spring, COSC certification and up to 72 hours of reserve for both cited Spirit Pilot versions. The figures are manufacturer specifications; they do not establish that one watch keeps better time in everyday use. Both brands say their movements are COSC-certified, so a buyer should not infer a comparative accuracy result from the certifications alone.
Case, fit and water-resistance ratings
Both watches have 39mm steel cases. TUDOR lists the Ranger at 12mm thick, with a 20mm lug width, satin-finished case, smooth satin-brushed bezel and domed sapphire crystal. Longines specifies a screw-in crown and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides for the Spirit Pilot. The cited Longines product summaries do not state a comparable thickness or lug-width measurement, so the shared diameter alone does not mean the watches will wear alike. If wrist fit, thickness or comfort is decisive, try both on.

The cited M79950-0008 has a beige domed dial and a three-link steel bracelet with folding clasp and T-fit safety catch. Which one should you buy?
- Choose the Ranger if you prefer its beige dial and expedition-watch styling, want the exact cited reference’s 20mm lug width and 12mm thickness stated, or favor its manufacturer-listed 100m rating. Choose between the fabric and steel-bracelet versions based on the configuration and price shown by TUDOR.
- Choose the Spirit Pilot if its aviation-inspired design appeals more, you want the cited black rubber-strap or blue steel-bracelet configuration, or its displayed US price is a better fit. Longines lists a silicon balance spring and up to 72 hours of reserve, but those specifications do not prove superior real-world timekeeping.
- Try both on if case proportions or comfort will decide it. Both are 39mm, but the available product summaries do not provide matching case measurements sufficient to conclude they fit the same.
For buyers choosing on specifications alone, neither is an obvious technical winner: the reserve figures are close, both are stated to be COSC-certified, and their most concrete differences are design, configuration, published water-resistance rating and price.
