What is the Tudor Black Bay Steel 79730?
Reference 79730 is the 2017 Heritage Black Bay Steel: a stainless-steel, 41 mm watch with polished and satin-finished surfaces, a domed black dial and a steel bezel marked for 60 minutes. Its bezel rotates in one direction. The date display distinguishes it from Black Bay versions without a date.
SJX described the steel bezel and date as giving this version a cleaner, more contemporary character. That is a design judgment, not a technical advantage; whether it suits you depends on your preference for the steel bezel and date display.

The technical specifications come from a TUDOR launch sheet available as a third-party-hosted copy; its original hosting authenticity has not been independently verified. SJX’s contemporaneous 2017 report also identifies the 41 mm case, 200 m rating, MT5612, date and roughly three-day reserve, and notes a silicon hairspring. The water-resistance figure is a manufacturer specification, not a result of independent dive testing.

How the design and movement shape the watch
Steel bezel and date
The steel bezel gives the 79730 a different visual balance from a Black Bay with a contrasting bezel insert. Its engraved minute scale supports elapsed-time reading, while the date adds a practical calendar display. These are features to weigh by preference, not proof that the 79730 is more capable than another Black Bay.
MT5612 and approximately 70-hour reserve
The self-winding MT5612 is COSC-certified and includes stop-seconds, which halts the seconds hand when setting the time. Its approximately 70-hour reserve means a fully wound watch can run for close to three days while unworn, although actual running time depends on its state and use.

Bracelet, leather and included fabric strap
The launch specification listed the watch with either a steel bracelet or an aged leather strap, and an additional fabric strap with buckle in the box. SJX described that fabric option as olive-green and NATO-style. These details describe the launch package, not a guarantee of what accompanies a pre-owned example today.
When evaluating a listing, confirm the exact configuration and ask which components are physically included. In particular, check for the fabric strap, box and papers, and—if the bracelet matters to you—the bracelet and its links. Condition and completeness can affect the usefulness and comparability of two offers.

What did the 79730 cost at launch?
Contemporaneous 2017 coverage reported these launch-era prices. They are not current asking prices, completed-sale values or an appraisal of an individual watch.

SJX reported the watch was expected in stores in June 2017. No current fair-value range for reference 79730 is established here. For a purchase decision, compare listings that match in configuration and condition, and take service history, documentation, seller protections and price into account. A launch price is not a useful stand-in for a present-day asking price.

The reference matters when comparing generations. TUDOR’s current Black Bay family page covers current variants, not the 79730. For example, the official product page for reference M7941A1A0NU-0001 lists an MT5602-U movement, a T-fit clasp and a 70-hour reserve; its page showed a suggested retail price of $5,325 when accessed on 8 October 2026. Those are specifications and pricing for that later reference, not the 79730.
Compare the watches on the same terms: bezel and date design, movement and generation, included configuration, condition, and whether the figure is a historical launch price, current asking price or completed sale. Do not assume accessory fit between references from dimensions that have not been verified for both.
