Which watch better fits your priorities?
Choose the Northflag for a second time zone and date
The Northflag’s MT5652-U movement has an integrated GMT function. Its yellow 24-hour hand points to reference time on the angled 24-hour rehaut while the local hour hand tracks the time on a 12-hour cycle. A date display sits at 3 o’clock. That makes it the more useful choice if you regularly track another time zone or want a date window.

The current Ranger keeps the dial to centered hour, minute, and seconds hands, with the 3-6-9-12 numeral layout associated with the model. It is the more straightforward option if you do not need a GMT hand or date.
#1 Best Overall
- Tudor Royal Automatic Salmon Dial Men's Watch M28600-0009
Choose based on the size you want to wear
The Northflag comes in a 40 mm case. The Ranger range offers 36 mm and 39 mm cases; the 36 mm variants are 11.0 mm thick with 19 mm lug width, while the 39 mm MT5402 version is 12.0 mm thick with 20 mm lug width. These dimensions help narrow the choice, but they do not establish how either watch will feel on a particular wrist. Try the sizes on if case presence or fit is decisive.
Choose the Ranger for a slightly longer stated reserve
TUDOR specifies 65 hours for the Northflag and approximately 70 hours for the Ranger. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. The difference is modest; both reserves can be useful if you rotate watches, but neither figure alone settles the choice.

- 41mm steel case with polished and satin finish
- Bidirectional rotatable bezel in steel with 24-hour graduated anodised aluminium disc
- Self-winding mechanical movement with 70 hour power reserve
Choose the Northflag for METAS certification
TUDOR lists the Northflag as both COSC- and METAS-certified; the current Ranger is listed as COSC-certified. TUDOR says its METAS Master Chronometer certification covers precision, magnetic-field resistance, water resistance, and power reserve. Its certification explanation describes a 0 to +5 seconds-per-day range and testing against a 15,000-gauss magnetic field. Those are certification criteria, not a promise of a particular owner’s day-to-day accuracy or protection in every magnetic environment. Read TUDOR’s METAS certification explanation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTUDOR separately says its fully assembled watch standard is -2 to +4 seconds per day and describes COSC’s movement standard as -4 to +6 seconds per day. Those figures refer to different testing stages, so they should not be treated as a direct, like-for-like comparison.

Choose the Northflag for an integrated bracelet
The Northflag’s integrated two-link steel bracelet has a T-fit clasp with five adjustment positions across an 8 mm adjustment window. The Ranger is offered in bracelet and fabric-strap configurations. Pick the Northflag if that integrated design and on-the-fly clasp adjustment appeal to you; pick a Ranger configuration according to whether you want steel or fabric. Bracelet preference is personal, and these specifications do not establish which will be more comfortable for you.
How much do they cost in the US?
As shown on TUDOR’s US pages in 2026, the Northflag reference M9140G1A0U-0001 is listed at $5,525 and marked available exclusively at TUDOR boutiques. The 39 mm Ranger fabric-strap configuration is listed at $3,675, while the 39 mm steel-bracelet reference M79950-0001 is listed at $4,025. These are suggested retail prices for those exact configurations, not promises of local stock or transaction prices. Check TUDOR’s pages for current pricing and availability before buying.

What is the historical connection?
The names are connected, but the 1952–54 British North Greenland Expedition watches were not branded Ranger on their dials. TUDOR says the Oyster Prince watches used by expedition members lacked that inscription; subsequent Ranger models carried forward the expedition-watch concept. TUDOR dates the Ranger name’s registration to 1929, associates the familiar 3-6-9-12 dial style with the 1960s, and says the Ranger II with an integrated bracelet appeared in 1973. Its Ranger history page explains the lineage.
The current Ranger reference 79950 debuted in 2022, which TUDOR linked to the expedition’s 70th anniversary. TUDOR says the second-generation Northflag takes design cues from the 1973 Ranger II, including its integrated bracelet and distinctive black dial. The 2026 Northflag adds GMT functionality and METAS certification. These are TUDOR’s accounts of its history and design inspiration.
How to make the final choice
- Pick the Northflag if you will use its GMT hand and date, want the integrated bracelet, or value the additional METAS certification.
- Pick the Ranger if you prefer the simpler display, want a 36 mm option, favor a roughly 70-hour stated reserve, or want a lower listed US price among the configurations above.
- Try both on if size, bracelet feel, or dial presence matters more than the specification sheet. The 40 mm Northflag and 36 mm or 39 mm Rangers cannot be ranked for comfort from dimensions alone.
Both current models are specified for 100 m water resistance. That rating is not, by itself, a recommendation for a particular kind of diving or use; follow TUDOR’s care and use guidance.
