The TUDOR Pelagos 39 is the more practical choice if you want a current, lightweight titanium diver with modern bracelet adjustment and a manufacturer-backed specification. The Rolex Submariner ref. 14060 is the vintage-leaning choice: a 40 mm steel, no-date Submariner with a higher original water-resistance rating, but one you must buy and assess as a pre-owned watch. The key distinction is not simply 39 mm versus 40 mm; it is a current watch versus the condition and history of a particular older example.

The Pelagos specifications come from TUDOR’s current product page and its 2022 technical sheet. Historical 14060 details above are from Rolexopedia’s secondary reference guide. Rolex’s current Submariner overview covers the modern family, not the 14060; its current 41 mm case and caliber 3230 should not be substituted for this reference’s specifications (Rolex Newsroom).

Which one wears better?
Pelagos 39: smaller nominal diameter, lighter material
The Pelagos 39 measures 39 mm across, with an 11.8 mm case and 21 mm lug width. Its grade 2 titanium construction gives it a different wearing character from a steel watch, while the 21 mm lug width matters if you plan to use another strap. TUDOR supplies a black rubber strap as well as the titanium bracelet.
Submariner 14060: one millimeter wider, but not automatically larger on the wrist
The 14060 is described as a 40 mm steel watch. That one-millimeter difference alone cannot determine which watch will fit or feel better: case thickness, lug span, wrist shape, bracelet fit and personal preference also matter. A comparable 14060 thickness figure is not established in the cited historical guide, so a direct thickness comparison would be unreliable.

Water resistance: compare ratings, not the safety of a used watch
TUDOR rates the Pelagos 39 to 200 m, while the historical 14060 reference guide gives 300 m / 1,000 ft. These figures describe the models’ stated ratings; they do not certify the pressure integrity of a specific pre-owned Rolex today. Before taking a 14060 into water, have a qualified watchmaker assess and test that individual watch. Age, seals, prior repairs and condition matter more than the original specification when deciding whether a used watch is safe to submerge.
Movement, certification and the no-date dial
Pelagos 39: documented modern movement specification
TUDOR specifies its automatic MT5400 movement, COSC certification and approximately 70 hours of power reserve. TUDOR also states that it requires an assembled Pelagos 39 to run within -2 to +4 seconds per day, compared with the COSC allowance of -4 to +6 seconds per day for a movement. That is the brand’s stated tolerance, not a result from an independent test of every watch.

14060: keep the reference distinct from the 14060M
The cited historical guide associates the 14060 with caliber 3000 and describes it as a two-line, no-date Submariner. Do not transfer caliber 3130 specifications or later dial variations from the 14060M to the 14060. The guide places the transition around 1999, but transitional examples and retail overlap make an exact final-production year uncertain without serial-specific provenance.
Both watches omit a date window. That makes the choice straightforward if you prefer a symmetrical, uncluttered dial: neither requires choosing between a date display and a no-date layout.

Bracelet adjustment and strap flexibility
The Pelagos 39’s titanium bracelet uses TUDOR’s T-fit adjustment, safety catch and diver extension. The included rubber strap and extension add an alternative without needing to source a separate strap. If you fit a third-party strap, spring bars or clasp, confirm compatibility with the actual watch rather than assuming that a nominal 21 mm measurement guarantees fit.
For the 14060, the steel Oyster configuration is characteristic, but the exact bracelet and end links on a pre-owned example can differ with its history. Check what is present, whether components are original to the watch, and whether any replacement or service parts are documented.

Buying decision: current watch or vintage ownership?
Choose the Pelagos 39 if you want
- A currently listed model with published specifications from TUDOR.
- A 39 mm titanium case and a lighter-material alternative to steel.
- A supplied bracelet with T-fit adjustment plus a rubber strap.
- A manufacturer-stated movement, certification and reserve specification.
Choose the 14060 if you want
- The specific appeal of a discontinued, steel, no-date Submariner.
- The 14060’s historical reference identity and two-line dial described by the specialist guide.
- To evaluate condition, originality, service history and ownership details as part of the purchase.
TUDOR’s US product page listed the Pelagos 39 at $5,625 when accessed on October 8, 2026. Treat that as a region- and date-specific listing, not a like-for-like comparison with a pre-owned 14060: no comparable current market-price sample for the Rolex was established. Before buying a 14060, assess the individual watch’s condition and originality, request service documentation, consider the seller’s reputation, and arrange a watchmaker’s water-resistance assessment if water use is planned.
