The Tudor Ranger M79950-0001 is a 39mm steel expedition-style watch with a black dial, 100m water resistance and Tudor’s COSC-certified MT5402 movement. It is a straightforward, specification-rich option, but this review is based on published specifications—not a hands-on wear or timing test. The current Ranger family also includes 36mm models, beige/Dune dials and fabric-strap configurations, so the 39mm black-dial bracelet watch is only one way into the range.
What is the Tudor Ranger M79950-0001?
The reference reviewed here is the 39mm black-dial version on a steel bracelet. Tudor positions the Ranger within its expedition-watch tradition: a practical-looking design centered on legibility and everyday versatility rather than additional complications. Its simple layout and rugged specification make it a plausible everyday or travel watch, though comfort, finishing in person and real-world performance cannot be judged from specifications alone.
The case is satin-finished stainless steel, with a domed black dial and domed sapphire crystal. Tudor lists the case thickness as 12.0mm, the lug width as 20mm and water resistance as 100m (330ft). The bracelet has three links, a folding clasp and T-fit safety catch. See the official Ranger M79950-0001 specifications for the manufacturer’s current listing.

Movement and timekeeping: what the numbers mean
The MT5402 is a self-winding movement with a bidirectional rotor. Tudor lists COSC certification and an approximately 70-hour power reserve, enough that a watch taken off on Friday can, in principle, still be running on Monday. Actual reserve depends on the watch’s state of wind and use.

- Tudor Ranger Automatic Black Dial Men's Stainless Steel Watch M79950-0001
COSC certification applies to the movement’s chronometer testing. Tudor separately says it requires an accuracy range of -2 to +4 seconds per day for the completely assembled watch; its Ranger history page contrasts this with COSC’s -4 to +6 seconds per day allowance for a single movement. That assembled-watch figure is Tudor’s stated standard, not an independent timing result for this particular watch. Tudor’s wording is: “The Ranger model is equipped with Manufacture Calibre MT5402.” Read its Ranger history and movement information.
What changed in the 2026 Ranger range?
The current family is not limited to the 39mm black-dial bracelet model. Tudor’s product listings show 36mm and 39mm cases, black and beige/Dune dials, and bracelet or fabric-strap configurations. Wallpaper* reported on January 4, 2026, that both case sizes were available with either dial. Its UK bracelet prices at publication were £2,930 for the 36mm and £3,020 for the 39mm; these are dated UK figures, not guaranteed current prices or prices for other markets. See Wallpaper*’s January 4, 2026 report on the Ranger range.
How to choose: 36mm or 39mm, black or Dune?
Choose by wrist presence, not a universal fit rule
The 36mm and 39mm cases offer a meaningful choice in how much watch occupies the wrist. The smaller case may suit buyers who prefer a more compact look; the 39mm is the reference point for this review and gives the Ranger a more assertive presence. Case diameter alone does not establish how either size will fit a particular wrist, and no wrist-fit test is documented here. Try both sizes if possible, ideally on the configuration you expect to wear.

Choose the dial that works with your wardrobe
Black is the conventional, high-contrast option on M79950-0001. Beige/Dune gives the same basic Ranger proposition a warmer, less familiar appearance. The choice is aesthetic; the available information does not establish a performance advantage for either dial.

Choose bracelet or fabric strap for how you plan to wear it
The bracelet is the steel three-link configuration listed for M79950-0001. The family also includes fabric-strap versions. The 20mm lug width is useful when considering alternate straps, but width alone does not guarantee compatibility: check the strap’s end fittings and attachment method against the exact watch.
Check your local price and availability
Tudor describes prices on its product pages as suggested retail prices and notes that prices and models may change. The live listing is region-dependent, so check Tudor or an authorized local retailer for the price and configuration available where you live rather than treating a past UK figure as a current worldwide price.

Heritage: expedition roots, with an important distinction
Tudor dates the Ranger name’s registration to 1929, identifies the Oyster Prince Ranger reference 7995 with 1965, and places the modern reference 79950 in 2022. The brand also links the Ranger to the British North Greenland Expedition of 1952–1954. Crucially, Tudor’s history says the watches used by expedition members did not carry the Ranger name on their dials; later models continued the expedition-watch concept. The heritage is part of Tudor’s account of the line, not evidence that the expedition watches themselves were branded “Ranger.”
Is the Tudor Ranger worth considering?
The published specification makes a strong case for the Ranger as a no-frills mechanical watch: sapphire crystal, 100m water resistance, COSC-certified movement, approximately 70 hours of reserve and a bracelet with an adjustable T-fit safety catch on the M79950-0001. Whether it is worth its local price depends on your preference for this design, the size that fits you and what competing watches cost in your market. The available evidence does not establish market-wide value, resale performance or reliability rates.
Buyers comparing it with a Rolex Explorer should treat that as a separate, configuration-specific decision: this information does not support a detailed head-to-head comparison of dimensions, movement performance, availability or price. For the Ranger itself, compare the 36mm and 39mm options in person and confirm the exact dial and strap configuration before purchasing.
