TUDOR and Rolex share a history, but they are not interchangeable watch lines. TUDOR began with Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf’s plan for a more modestly priced watch with dependable performance; today, each brand offers distinct collections and model-specific designs, movements and prices. To compare them fairly, match particular references—such as a TUDOR Black Bay and a Rolex Submariner—and check their specifications and local prices side by side.
How TUDOR and Rolex are connected
Hans Wilsdorf registered “The Tudor” on his behalf in 1926 and established Montres TUDOR S.A. on 6 March 1946. TUDOR’s account of its early history says Rolex guaranteed the younger brand’s technical, aesthetic and functional characteristics and provided distribution and after-sales service. That is a shared origin and historical relationship, not a reason to treat today’s products or identities as the same. TUDOR’s official history reproduces Wilsdorf’s stated aim: a watch agents could sell at a more modest price than Rolex while aspiring to Rolex’s reputation for dependability. The statement describes the original positioning; it does not establish a fixed price gap today.

Rolex currently describes itself as an “integrated and independent Swiss watch manufacture.” TUDOR describes its Le Locle site as its watch manufacture, where watches are assembled and tested, and says the site is connected to neighbouring Kenissi, its movement-production facility founded in 2016. These descriptions provide manufacturing context, but do not establish that every calibre is made entirely at one location. Rolex company profile · TUDOR manufacture

A diver-style TUDOR and a Rolex Submariner make a recognizable comparison, but neither brand is defined by one design. TUDOR’s collections include Black Bay and Pelagos as well as the 1926 and Royal families, spanning different case sizes, materials, functions and styles. Rolex groups its collections into Classic and Professional categories and lists the Submariner among its named families. TUDOR watch collection · Rolex watch collection
#1 Best Overall
- 41mm steel case with polished and satin finish
- Bidirectional rotatable bezel in steel with 24-hour graduated anodised aluminium disc
- Self-winding mechanical movement with 70 hour power reserve
Example: Rolex Submariner Date 126610LN
Rolex’s documentation for the Submariner Date reference 126610LN specifies a 41 mm Oystersteel case, black ceramic Cerachrom bezel, sapphire crystal, screw-down case back and crown, and water resistance to 300 metres. Those are specifications for this reference, not a template for every Rolex. The Submariner’s current 41 mm generation dates to 2020; the model’s history page describes its evolution from a tool watch into a widely recognized icon. Example: choosing a TUDOR Black Bay
“Black Bay” covers a family, not one set of dimensions or features. Select the exact model and reference before comparing case diameter, thickness, lug-to-lug length, bracelet, clasp, bezel, dial, date display or water resistance. The collection’s variety means a visual resemblance to a Submariner does not, by itself, establish matching specifications or suitability for a particular activity.

What to check in a matched design comparison
- Case dimensions and how the case and bracelet fit your wrist.
- Materials and finish, plus clasp design and available adjustment.
- Dial layout, hands, lume and bezel material and operation.
- Date or no-date configuration, including whether the crystal has a magnifier.
- Water-resistance rating and the manufacturer’s stated intended use.
Movements: specifications depend on the reference
TUDOR announced its first Manufacture Calibre in 2015. Its current movement overview describes a range of calibres and model-specific features; selected examples include 70-hour power reserves, silicon balance springs and COSC certification. These are not universal specifications for every TUDOR. For example, TUDOR says the MT5602-U is METAS-certified, has a 70-hour reserve and is tested in a fully assembled watch to a 0/+5 seconds-per-day tolerance. The MT5813 chronograph is described as having a 70-hour reserve, a silicon balance spring and COSC certification. Check the calibre listed for the exact watch rather than transferring one model’s specifications to another. TUDOR movement overview
The Submariner Date 126610LN uses Rolex calibre 3235, a self-winding mechanical movement identified by Rolex as a Manufacture Rolex calibre. Rolex’s technical brochure gives this reference a precision of −2/+2 seconds per day after casing. These figures describe different testing and certification claims; compare tolerances only when the selected watches’ documentation puts them on a comparable basis. Price: why a universal gap is misleading
TUDOR’s founding-era aim involved a more modest price than Rolex, but that history does not tell you how much less a current TUDOR costs. Price depends on the exact reference, materials, complication, country and date. The official TUDOR collection page displayed a Royal 40 mm steel-and-yellow-gold example at $6,325 when accessed on 12 October 2026. That is a page-specific listing, not a brand-wide price range or a matched comparison with a Rolex. The official Rolex collection and Submariner technical pages cited here do not establish a corresponding current Rolex price, so there is no supported percentage difference to quote. How to compare prices fairly
- Choose the exact TUDOR and Rolex references, matching materials and functions as closely as possible.
- Check official brand listings or authorized retailers for the same country and currency, and record the date.
- Separate list price from taxes, availability, waiting times and secondary-market asking prices.
- Verify that a retailer is authorized and that the listing covers the condition and warranty you expect.
Prices and collection listings can change, and availability may differ by market. A current local check is more useful than applying a historical brand-positioning claim or a price from another country.

Which comparison matters most to you?
- For design: choose the specific case size, materials, bracelet and dial configuration you prefer; brand-level shorthand will not settle the fit.
- For movement specifications: compare the documented calibre and testing claims for each reference, paying attention to how and when precision is stated.
- For price: compare current local listings for exact models, not a generalized TUDOR-versus-Rolex percentage.
- For heritage: recognize the historical connection while evaluating the two present-day product lines on their own terms.
