TUDOR stands out for its Rolex-linked origins, its Le Locle watchmaking operation connected to Kenissi movement production, and a mix of model-specific Manufacture calibres and METAS-certified watches. Those features explain what is distinctive about the brand; they do not, by themselves, prove that TUDOR is better value or more capable than every other Swiss watchmaker. For a fair comparison, look at specific models and the same technical criteria.
How TUDOR’s history shaped its identity
TUDOR’s history began with the registration of “The TUDOR” trademark for Hans Wilsdorf in 1926. TUDOR says Montres TUDOR S.A. was created in 1946. In the brand’s account, the original idea was to offer a more modestly priced watch while pursuing the dependability associated with Rolex. That explains the historical positioning, not how TUDOR’s prices compare with competitors today. TUDOR’s history of the brand quotes Wilsdorf describing that ambition.

The relationship is therefore part of TUDOR’s documented origin, but the useful present-day question is what each watch contains and how it is tested—not whether a historical association alone makes it equivalent to a Rolex or any other Swiss brand.
Where TUDOR watches are made and assembled
TUDOR says every watch is assembled and fully tested at its Le Locle manufacture, completed in 2021. The facility is physically and visually connected to the neighbouring Kenissi manufacture, which TUDOR says it founded in 2016 as a movement production facility. The brand describes the Le Locle site and its network of owned affiliates as enabling it to integrate calibre development and production and control strategic components. These are TUDOR’s descriptions of its own operations, not independently audited factory findings. TUDOR’s manufacture overview explains the arrangement.

What “Manufacture calibre” means in TUDOR’s collection
TUDOR announced its first Manufacture calibre in 2015. Its movement overview presents a family of movements assigned to different models; it does not say that every TUDOR watch uses one. The Black Bay 58, for example, is listed with Manufacture Calibre MT5400, while the Pelagos is listed with MT5612. Check the specification for the exact reference you are considering, because a brand’s ability to make or develop calibres does not establish which movement is fitted to every watch in its range. TUDOR’s calibre overview lists its model assignments and movement details.
Several specified Manufacture calibres are described by TUDOR as having approximately 70 hours of power reserve, and some use a silicon balance spring. These are calibre-specific features, not collection-wide guarantees. TUDOR’s historical material also says that movements used before the Manufacture-calibre introduction were sourced exclusively from Swiss suppliers. The 2015 development marked a move toward greater independence; it does not establish that TUDOR has ended all supplier relationships. TUDOR’s 2015 press document provides that historical context.

What METAS certification adds
METAS Master Chronometer certification, as described by TUDOR, covers more than movement rate. Its stated criteria include precision, resistance to magnetic fields, waterproofness and power reserve. TUDOR gives a daily accuracy tolerance of 0 to +5 seconds and describes testing at two temperatures, in six positions and at two power-reserve levels. Its certification description also specifies resistance to magnetic fields of 15,000 gauss, alongside certified waterproofness and power reserve. A watch must be Swiss Made and its movement must be COSC-certified to qualify under the prerequisites TUDOR lists. TUDOR’s METAS explanation sets out its stated scope.
Those criteria should not be collapsed into a simple comparison of accuracy numbers, because the figures TUDOR publishes refer to different test contexts. In 2026 Monarch press material, TUDOR gives COSC’s tolerance as -4/+6 seconds per day for a single uncased movement, its own internal standard as -2/+4 seconds per day for fully assembled Manufacture-calibre watches, and METAS as 0/+5 seconds per day for a Master Chronometer-certified watch. The first applies to an uncased movement; the other figures refer to assembled watches under their stated standards. These are published specifications, not independent measurements of every watch in use. TUDOR’s 2026 Monarch press material gives the comparison.

How to compare a TUDOR with another Swiss watch
Compare named references rather than treating either brand as a single specification. Use the same criteria on both sides, and verify current specifications for the models and market you are considering.
- Movement: identify the exact calibre and whether the maker describes it as a Manufacture movement. Do not infer the movement in a particular reference from the brand’s broader manufacturing capabilities.
- Certification and accuracy: distinguish movement certification from whole-watch certification, and keep each published tolerance attached to its test conditions.
- Practical specifications: compare power reserve, magnetic resistance, water resistance, case material and dimensions using the manufacturers’ figures for the exact references.
- Ownership details: check bracelet or strap configuration, service arrangements and current local price on a like-for-like basis.
- Heritage and design: treat these as documented history or personal preference, not as objective proof of superior quality.
TUDOR’s brand-published specifications establish what it claims for its watches and certifications. They do not establish a market-wide value ranking or prove that TUDOR is categorically better than other Swiss brands.
