Just before Meta Connect 2025, an unlisted Meta promotional video briefly revealed two products that pointed to a much broader smart-glasses strategy: Ray-Ban glasses with an in-lens display and neural wristband controls, plus a wraparound Oakley model with a centrally mounted camera.
Meta Connect took place on September 17–18, 2025, so these products are no longer simply rumors. The display-equipped model became Meta Ray-Ban Display, while the Oakley design evolved into Oakley Meta Vanguard. The leak was exciting because it previewed Meta’s move beyond everyday camera-and-audio eyewear into wearable displays and sports equipment.

What the leaked Meta video showed
The source appeared to be a Meta promotional video that was briefly published or made accessible as an unlisted upload, then removed. Reposted clips and screenshots circulated before Connect. The video seemed to show several products, but two stood out:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Ray-Ban smart glasses with a small in-lens display.
- A wrist-worn neural input device shown controlling the glasses.
- A sporty, wraparound Oakley design with a camera positioned at the center of the bridge.
The footage established the broad product direction, not a complete specification sheet. It did not reliably confirm final names, prices, battery life, display brightness, water resistance, regional availability, or launch dates. Reports at the time used names such as “Hypernova,” “Celeste,” “Supernova 2,” and “Sphaera,” but those were rumor labels or codenames rather than a definitive retail lineup.

It was also never established whether the video appeared accidentally or was a deliberate marketing tease. TechRadar and UploadVR both covered the removed-video theory before the event.
1. Ray-Ban glasses with an in-lens display
The more ambitious leak showed Ray-Ban-style glasses that could place information directly in the wearer’s view. Reported demonstrations included navigation guidance, messages, visual Meta AI responses, translation, and contextual prompts.
That would represent a significant change from the original Ray-Ban Meta concept. Those glasses are primarily:

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Camera glasses for photos, video, livestreaming, and calls.
- Open-ear audio devices.
- Voice-controlled AI wearables.
- Hands-free communication tools that still rely heavily on a phone, app, account, and network connection.
A display could make the glasses more useful when speaking aloud is inconvenient. A wearer might glance at a translation, follow a direction, or read a short notification without taking out a phone. It could also make the product more accessible for people who cannot comfortably rely on conventional touch interfaces.
However, “display-equipped smart glasses” is the more accurate description. This was not evidence of full transparent augmented reality with room-scale, persistent 3D overlays. Meta’s reported product direction was much more limited and practical than the spatial-computing ambitions shown by prototypes such as Orion.

The neural wristband was the real surprise
The wristband shown alongside the glasses was based on surface electromyography, or sEMG. It senses electrical signals associated with muscle activity in the wrist and translates subtle finger or hand movements into commands.
That opens up a different control model from voice assistants and touchscreens. Silent gestures could let someone select, scroll, interact with a display, or potentially enter information in public without speaking or reaching for a phone. The same approach may be valuable in noisy environments and could have accessibility applications.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe important qualification is that a demonstration of gesture interaction does not prove that unrestricted typing, every reported gesture, or every software function was available at launch. The leak showed the idea and its apparent use; it did not define the complete product experience. Associated Press and Tom’s Guide reported on the display and wristband ahead of or around the announcement.
2. The Oakley Sphaera-style smart glasses
The second leak showed a very different type of product: a wraparound Oakley-style frame intended for sports and outdoor use. Coverage widely described it as related to the Oakley Sphaera design, but the name was not confirmed.
The most conspicuous feature was a camera mounted centrally above the nose bridge rather than toward one side of the frame. That placement could produce a more natural forward-facing viewpoint for first-person footage, especially during cycling, skiing, running, or other activities where the wearer’s head direction matters. That is a reasonable design inference, not a measured performance result confirmed by Meta or Oakley.

The frame itself suggested a clear change in priority from lifestyle eyewear. A wraparound design can provide greater coverage and a more secure fit during movement, while sport-oriented lenses may be better suited to bright outdoor conditions. The trade-off is that a larger athletic frame is less discreet and may be less appealing for office or everyday wear.

The leak did not establish the final camera specifications, battery life, lens options, fit system, software features, or water-resistance rating. Water resistance should not be treated as waterproofing. Oakley’s eventual product information is the appropriate source for current compatibility and usage limits.
What the leak got right
| What appeared before Connect | What Meta ultimately announced | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| Ray-Ban glasses with an in-lens display | Meta Ray-Ban Display | The central product concept and wristband pairing were confirmed. |
| Neural wristband controlling the glasses | An sEMG-based neural wristband | The demonstration became part of the announced product experience, but the leak did not establish every supported interaction. |
| Wraparound Oakley design resembling Sphaera | Oakley Meta Vanguard | The sport-focused direction was validated, but the rumored Sphaera name was superseded. |
| Rumored next-generation Ray-Ban Meta glasses | Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 | The standard camera-and-audio line also received an official successor. |
So the leak was substantially right about the product categories, but not literally right about every name or detail. That distinction matters: promotional footage can include products at different stages of development, regional variants, or designs that change before retail release.
What Meta announced at Connect 2025
Meta Ray-Ban Display
Meta officially announced the display model as Meta Ray-Ban Display. It includes an in-lens display and is paired with the neural wristband demonstrated in the leak. In the United States, Meta announced a price of $799 and availability beginning September 30, 2025. Current stock, pricing, lens availability, and regional features should be checked with Meta or Ray-Ban.
The product is best understood as a premium information interface rather than a full AR headset. Its value depends on whether glanceable directions, messages, translation, AI responses, and discreet gesture control are worth the higher price and the added hardware complexity.

Oakley Meta Vanguard
The leaked Oakley direction became Oakley Meta Vanguard, a performance-focused model for high-intensity sports. Meta positioned it around activities such as running, cycling, and skiing, with athletic-data use cases including Garmin-related integration.
Oakley’s official FAQ lists up to six hours of continuous audio playback and up to nine hours of typical use, although actual endurance depends on recording, calls, AI use, audio volume, connectivity, and software conditions. See the official Oakley Meta FAQ for current limitations and compatibility.
Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2
Meta also introduced Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2, the mainstream continuation of the camera-and-audio glasses. Reported improvements included longer battery life and a higher-resolution camera. It is the more natural upgrade for owners who want better recording, calls, audio, livestreaming, and voice-based AI without paying for a display.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Meta’s bigger strategy: three types of smart glasses
The most important revelation was not simply that two new pairs of glasses existed. The products separated Meta’s portfolio into three distinct categories:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Everyday camera-and-audio glasses: Ray-Ban Meta and Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2.
- Performance glasses: Oakley Meta models, including HSTN and Vanguard.
- Information-display glasses: Meta Ray-Ban Display.
That is a more useful framework than treating every model as a variation on the same wearable. Ray-Ban is aimed at ordinary daily use, Oakley targets athletic activity and outdoor recording, and Display tests whether people will pay for a new visual interface on their face.

Which model makes sense now?
- Choose Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 if you mainly want photos, video, calls, music, livestreaming, and voice-based AI in a conventional-looking frame.
- Choose Oakley Meta Vanguard if you run, cycle, ski, or spend substantial time outdoors and want a more secure, wraparound sports design. Its athletic features matter less if you mostly need casual eyewear.
- Choose Oakley Meta HSTN if you want Oakley branding and smart features in a more lifestyle-oriented shape rather than Vanguard’s aggressive sport profile. Meta’s portfolio guide at about.fb.com provides current positioning.
- Choose Meta Ray-Ban Display only if glanceable information and neural-wristband control are central to what you want. Its $799 U.S. launch price makes it a poor value for buyers who simply want a camera, speakers, and AI.
- Consider Ray-Ban Meta Blayzer Optics or Scriber Optics if prescription compatibility and an optical-first design are more important than sports styling. Meta announced U.S. preorders starting at $499 in March 2026, but current prices vary by prescription, lenses, country, and promotions.
Prescription support, lens choices, colors, sizes, phone compatibility, internet requirements, and feature availability can vary by model and region. Some capabilities may also depend on the Meta AI companion app or early-access programs.
Privacy and practical limits
Camera-equipped glasses can record people who have not explicitly agreed to be filmed. A recording indicator is useful but does not settle the social or legal question. Rules vary by location, venue, workplace, school, and private property. Do not record in changing rooms, medical settings, restricted workplaces, or other sensitive environments.
Voice assistants and cloud-connected AI create separate privacy considerations from image capture. Reports about prototypes or software involving face recognition should also be read carefully: a reported experiment does not mean a consumer feature was broadly released. Buyers should review local rules and Meta’s current privacy documentation rather than assuming that every advertised capability works independently of a phone, account, app, or network.

The bottom line
The pre-Connect leak mattered because it exposed Meta’s emerging smart-glasses roadmap. The display-equipped Ray-Ban model became real as Meta Ray-Ban Display, and the rumored Sphaera-style Oakley became the sport-focused Oakley Meta Vanguard. But the leak did not confirm every name or specification, and neither product should be judged solely by how futuristic the footage looked.
Meta is now pursuing three separate use cases: everyday camera-and-audio glasses, performance eyewear, and glasses with a limited information display. That makes the leak historically accurate in direction—and more interesting than a routine product spoiler—but the right purchase still depends on whether the buyer wants better recording, serious sports functionality, or a new visual interface badly enough to accept the cost and limitations.
