The Ulysse Nardin Blast Free Wheel Marquetry is a 2023 Blast-collection watch built around a striking blue silicon-marquetry dial and the manually wound UN-176 movement. Its launch reference was 1760-401-3A/3A; launch coverage reported a 45 mm white-gold case, a flying tourbillon with the Ulysse Anchor Constant Escapement, and a seven-day power reserve.
What is the Blast Free Wheel Marquetry?
Ulysse Nardin introduced the Blast Free Wheel Marquetry during Geneva Watch Days in 2023. Monochrome Watches identified the launch model as reference 1760-401-3A/3A and described silicon marquetry as a new craft technique for the Blast line. The brand’s Blast collection is framed around contemporary design, in-house complications, métiers d’art and silicon technology.
The watch brings those elements together in an openworked display: instead of a conventional dial that conceals the mechanism, the movement’s components sit visibly above a patterned blue background. Ulysse Nardin’s official press-room collection lists a “Blast Free Wheel Marquetery” item, using that spelling, but the underlying media page is not available to verify additional release details.
Why is the dial unusual?
The blue background is made from silicon marquetry rather than a printed or simply finished dial surface. Monochrome’s 2023 account reports 103 individual blue silicon inlays, combining matte and mirror-polished finishes and two thicknesses: 0.30 mm and 0.35 mm. The article characterizes the assembly as delicate artisan work.

Because the face is openworked, the barrel, gear train, power-reserve display and flying tourbillon remain part of the visual composition. The marquetry provides a patterned field behind those exposed components, so the dial’s craft and the movement architecture are seen together rather than as separate features.
What movement and complications does it use?
The manual-winding manufacture caliber UN-176 is reported with a flying tourbillon incorporating Ulysse Nardin’s Anchor Constant Escapement. Monochrome lists silicon components in the escapement—the escapement wheel, anchor and balance spring—along with 249 components, 23 jewels and a frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour. Its stated power reserve is seven days.

These are architectural and material details, not proof of a particular gain in accuracy or durability. The escapement’s silicon components are a notable part of the construction, but the available model-specific reporting does not establish a quantified performance advantage.
Case, dimensions and wearing details
Launch coverage specifies a faceted 45 mm white-gold case, sapphire crystal, exhibition caseback and 30 m water resistance. That resistance rating is a specification, not an indication that the watch is intended for swimming or diving.
The launch model was described with grey Super-LumiNova hands and two blue strap options: a velvet-effect waterproof rubber strap or a blue alligator-leather strap. Both were reported with a white-gold deployant buckle, and Fratello reported that both straps were included in the launch price. Those are launch-era details; a current listing should be checked for its exact configuration and included accessories.

A separate retailer listing for reference 1760-401-3A/1A gives a different figure; the suffix differs, so the listings should not be treated as identical configurations.
