The Ulysse Nardin Freak X OPS replaces a conventional dial and hands with a rotating movement that displays the minutes, plus an hour pointer on a disc beneath it. This 43 mm Freak X comes in two references, distinguished in the documented versions by black or green fabric straps. Its carbon-fibre and green-epoxy case flanks give it a camouflage-like look, while the unusual display is the main practical question: it is visually striking, but less immediately familiar than standard hands.
What is the Ulysse Nardin Freak X OPS?
The Freak X OPS is a specific version of Ulysse Nardin’s Freak X, not a conventional three-hand watch with a decorative open dial. The movement itself forms the minute indicator, and a pointer on a rotating disc shows the hour. The manufacturer lists the case diameter as 43 mm and describes its flank blend as carbon fibre and green epoxy resin. Both strap references use a hook-and-loop fabric strap.
The official product pages identify the two versions as:
- Black fabric strap: reference 2303-270-2A-KAKI/0A.
- Green fabric strap: reference 2303-270-2A-KAKI/0B.
Ulysse Nardin’s product pages describe the case as titanium with carbon-composite construction. The carbon fibre and green epoxy resin are specifically identified in the flanks, where their pattern contributes to the watch’s distinctive appearance. Ulysse Nardin’s official product pages

How does the Ulysse Nardin Freak X OPS tell time?
There is no conventional dial, and there are no conventional hour and minute hands. The exposed movement rotates around the centre of the watch: a bridge on it indicates the minutes, while a pointer on a rotating disc beneath it indicates the hours. Read the pointer against the hour markings on the disc, then read the position of the movement bridge for the minutes.
The arrangement makes the movement part of the display rather than something viewed through a window in a separate dial. That is the source of the Freak’s visual drama, but it also means reading the time may take more attention if you are accustomed to ordinary hands and fixed indices. Time+Tide reviewer Zach Blass describes the display as integrated into the exposed movement; that is his observation, not a quantified legibility test. Time+Tide’s 2023 review

What movement and power reserve does it have?
The OPS uses Ulysse Nardin’s self-winding UN-230 movement. The manufacturer lists a flying carousel and silicon escapement alongside hours and minutes. Its published specifications are 214 parts, 21 jewels, a 34.50 mm total diameter, a frequency of 3 Hz (21,600 vibrations per hour) and a 72-hour power reserve. The official product page does not state a publication year for these figures. Ulysse Nardin’s official product pages
The Freak X family uses a crown for winding and setting. The OPS’s unusual time display should not be confused with earlier Freak mechanisms that involve turning the bezel: the relevant setting control for this model is the crown.

What is the difference between the black and green Freak X OPS?
In the documented pair, the confirmed distinction is strap color and reference number. Both are listed as 43 mm Freak X OPS watches with the same UN-230 movement and case description. The official pages and cited review do not establish a difference in movement, dimensions or core construction between these two strap variants.
| Version | Reference | Strap | Confirmed distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black | 2303-270-2A-KAKI/0A | Black hook-and-loop fabric | Black strap |
| Green | 2303-270-2A-KAKI/0B | Green hook-and-loop fabric | Green strap |
Time+Tide’s Zach Blass characterizes the OPS pattern as camouflage-like and discusses both strap colors. Whether the black or green version suits you better is a styling choice; the available evidence does not establish other technical differences between them. Time+Tide’s 2023 review

Who is the Freak X OPS for?
The OPS makes the most sense for someone drawn to mechanical display and unusual case materials, and who is comfortable reading time from a moving bridge and rotating hour disc rather than standard hands. Its 43 mm diameter, fabric strap and camouflage-like flank pattern give it a strong visual presence. If quick, familiar legibility or a more restrained appearance is the priority, those same choices may be reasons to compare it with a conventional watch before buying.
Ulysse Nardin’s product page reproduces a New York Times assessment calling the Freak one of ten watches to have revolutionized watchmaking over the preceding twenty years. That is an attributed editorial judgment, not a technical specification or a measure of how the OPS will suit an individual buyer. Ulysse Nardin’s official product pages
