The 2016 Ulysse Nardin Marine Chronograph Annual Calendar pairs an automatic chronograph with a calendar that adjusts for 30- and 31-day months and can be set forward or backward. Its 43 mm steel case and 100 m water resistance give the watch a sporting foundation, while Roman numerals and a ribbed bezel keep its look closer to formal marine styling than a purpose-built tool watch.
What the Marine Chronograph Annual Calendar is
In contemporary coverage, the 2016 watch was often described as the Marine Chronograph Annual Calendar, but Ulysse Nardin’s model name was Marine Chronograph. Its annual-calendar function is a feature of the chronograph, not a separate model name. The automatic caliber UN-153 combines both complications. Fondation Haute Horlogerie (FHH) lists a 52-hour power reserve and silicon balance spring and escapement; Peter Nievaart’s 2016 hands-on review describes the caliber as an extension of the UN-150 chronograph with an annual-calendar system associated with watchmaker Ludwig Oechslin. FHH’s technical entry and Nievaart’s review document the original watch.
How the annual calendar and chronograph work
Calendar indications and adjustment
The date appears in an aperture at 6 o’clock. A month indication shares the small-seconds subdial at 9 o’clock, while a 30-minute counter sits at 3 o’clock. The 6 o’clock position is also described in the hands-on account as the 12-hour chronograph counter; the date aperture occupies that area of the dial. This grouping lets the watch show its calendar without adding a separate month window.
The annual calendar advances through months with 30 or 31 days without requiring monthly correction. It needs a manual correction after February, whose length varies, and does not mechanically account for leap years. It is therefore less hands-off than a perpetual calendar. Fratello’s 2017 discussion explains both the annual calendar’s correction burden and a practical advantage of this implementation: its calendar can be adjusted forward or backward, rather than only advanced. Chronograph movement
Caliber UN-153 is automatic and includes a double-pusher chronograph. Its 52-hour reserve is the figure FHH records for the original Marine Chronograph; do not confuse it with the 53-hour specification on the later Marine Torpilleur Annual Chronograph.
Case, dial and reported wrist experience
FHH specifies a 43 mm stainless-steel case, screw-down crown, sapphire back, leather strap and 100 m water resistance. Nievaart’s 2016 description adds a ribbed bezel, screw-down pushers, polished and brushed surfaces, blackened luminous hands, Roman numerals and a white dial with the month pointer in red. Together these details make for a formal-sporting design: the numerals and bezel are traditional, while the luminous hands, screw-down controls and water resistance signal practical use.
Nievaart reported that the 43 mm watch “sits comfortably on the wrist despite its thickness.” He also described winding and adjustment as smooth and found the ability to move the calendar in either direction convenient. Those are his impressions from wearing the watch for weeks, not new hands-on testing.
Keep the later Torpilleur model separate
Ulysse Nardin currently lists a Marine Torpilleur Annual Chronograph, a distinct later model that also uses UN-153. Its official page gives a 44 mm case and 53-hour power reserve; those specifications do not belong to the 2016 Marine Chronograph. A current listing for the Torpilleur does not establish that the original Marine Chronograph remains in production or is available for sale. See Ulysse Nardin’s Torpilleur listing. WatchTime’s hands-on account also concerns the Torpilleur, not the original Marine Chronograph: WatchTime’s Torpilleur discussion.

What to check when comparing or buying one
The available technical information establishes the original model’s main specifications, but not current price, stock or condition. For a used or otherwise available example, confirm the exact reference and inspect its condition and service history with the seller or a qualified watchmaker. When comparing it with another chronograph, focus on the points that change how it wears and works:
