A watch without conventional hour and minute hands is usually described by how its display works: glowing numerals, numerals that appear in apertures, or an electronic screen. That readout is separate from the movement that keeps time and advances the display. A digital-looking watch can be electronic—or mechanically driven.
What do you call a watch without hands?
There is no single name for every handless watch. “Digital display” describes a way of reading the time, not necessarily the mechanism inside the watch. The display might illuminate numerals, reveal changing numerals through openings, or show the time on an electronic screen. The movement may use electronics or mechanical components to keep time and update that readout.
That distinction matters: a mechanical digital display is not an electronic watch just because it presents numbers rather than hands.
How do Nixie-tube watches display time?
A Nixie tube shows numerals using glowing cathodes inside a glass tube. Thomas Nixie’s documented wristwatch lights its miniature vintage tubes when the wearer presses a button on the front. The maker says the design used CMOS logic rather than a microprocessor. This is an on-demand display, not one that remains lit continuously.

Thomas Nixie says the original model is sold out. Its page also states that the watch was not waterproof and that its glass tubes could break if dropped. Those cautions apply to this particular design; they should not be assumed to describe every Nixie watch.
A second documented example is Gelfman’s IN-16 Nixie. The Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève listing describes it as a wristwatch using vintage Nixie tubes and gives its stainless-steel case dimensions as 46 × 48 mm. That listing does not establish whether the model is currently available.

A brief maker-recounted history
Thomas Nixie’s historical account says a friend asked, “could someone build a nixie tube wristwatch?” in March 2001. The maker recounts that five watches were completed in September and that 35 were assembled in total. These are figures from the maker’s retrospective account, not independently verified production records.
Can a watch show digital numerals and still be mechanical?
Yes. A. Lange & Söhne describes its ZEITWERK family as “a mechanically driven digital-display watch.” Hours and minutes appear as numerals in apertures, while the watch’s mechanical movement advances the display. Here, “digital” describes the numeral-based readout; it does not mean the watch uses an electronic screen.

The cited description is for the ZEITWERK family. Details can differ among variants, so the family-level description should not be treated as a specification for every individual model.
What other unusual displays are there?
Specialist Nixie-bulb projects
URWERK’s SpaceTime Blade is a specialist project that uses Nixie bulbs with numeral-forming cathodes. Its maker says the display changes 500 times per second. That figure is a manufacturer specification for this project, not a general characteristic of Nixie watches.

Electronic LCD displays
Electronic digital watches provide another handless approach, though they are distinct from mechanical digital displays. Epson’s corporate history says the Seiko Quartz LC V.F.A. 06LC was first marketed in October 1973 and continuously displayed hours, minutes, and seconds on an LCD. It is an early electronic-display example, not a mechanically driven numeral display.

- Readout: Does the watch use glowing numerals, numerals in apertures, or an electronic screen?
- Visibility: Is the time shown continuously or only when activated? Thomas Nixie documents a button-activated Nixie display; Epson describes a continuously displayed LCD in the historical Seiko 06LC.
- Timekeeping and display mechanism: Is the readout electronically driven or mechanically advanced? Thomas Nixie describes an electronic logic-based design, while A. Lange & Söhne describes the ZEITWERK as mechanically driven.
- Construction: Check dimensions, water resistance, glass fragility, and serviceability for the specific model. Thomas Nixie says its historical watch was not waterproof and could suffer broken tubes if dropped; the GPHG listing gives the Gelfman model’s case dimensions.
- Availability: Confirm stock with the maker or a verified seller. Thomas Nixie explicitly marks its historical model sold out; the cited pages for the other examples do not establish current stock.
These designs span a sold-out historical watch, named watch families, and specialist projects. Their presence in examples or historical records does not mean they are commonly available or intended for everyday wear.
